How long is DH or SO taking off if at all?

And how long are they going to stay at the hospital with you?

My hubby took 2 weeks off vacation for when she makes her arrival. They told him his vacation will start when I go into labor. He's hoping I go on a Friday night or weekend so his vacation wouldn't be from a Tuesday to Tuesday or Thursday to Thursday type thing.

Someone mentioned that if she does come during the week that I would be so tired at the hospital that he could probably go to work and work until we're able to go home. Just as long as everything goes smoothly.

My mom said time at the hospital is good bonding time.

So will your DH or SO be at the hospital during the day with you until you go home or will he continue working just as long as everything went smoothly?

My hubby plans on going home at night to take care of our pup.

Re: How long is DH or SO taking off if at all?

  • At least a week, possibly two.  He may take one week and then work part time for a couple of weeks (like 6 hours days or so).  He will definitely be off while I'm in the hospital and that whole first week.  He may not sleep over at the hospital since we have a 2 year old at home.

  • DH won't leave my side until we go home and for the first little while.

He did just accept the chance to TA for the summer term and took it on, I'm a little worried about the work load for him as its a condensed term, but I hope the need to be at school will be minimal.
  • We don't know as he started a new job on Tuesday and isn't entitled to anything yet. We're hoping they'll let him take a week's paid vacation and then he can take another week later in the summer.

My hospital doesn't usually keep people longer than 1 night unless there's a reason to, so I shouldn't be there long. We only live 10 mins away, but he doesn't drive so would have to rely on rides/taxis if he were to go back and forth. It's probably best for him to stay at the hosp during the day.

  • DH started a new job in january so he doesn't have a lot of accrued vacation time. He also hasn't been at his job long enough to qualify for FMLA leave, so he'll only have about 6 days of PTO to use and that's including sick time as well. He's hoping I go into labor on a friday night (preferably the friday before my sunday (5/18) EDD...he wishes!) so that he can take the following week off + he'll have memorial day off as well, bring total time off to 1.5 weeks.

He works within walking distance from the hospital so he'll be working up until I call him and say GET HERE NOW!! The plan is for me to hang with MIL at the hospital until that happens.

  • With DD, he was able to take almost 5 weeks (it was near the end of the year). This time he will take 2 weeks. He will take the day of delivery off, but will work the day or two that I will be in the hospital since there is no point for him to use time while I have help there.
When I get out, he will take off. He will take half days after that since he has to drive in the direction of work to take DD to daycare anyway. When his mom comes, he will take more time off since I don't want to be solo with her cause she drives me nuts.

  • DH will not take any time off until I go into labor. He's a fire fighter so he works 24 hour shifts and his leave policy is the most jacked up thing you've ever seen. He basically is entitled to a month off work- which seems like a lot but he only works 12 days a month at the fire station anyway- so it equates to a full cycle. We also own a business on the side and he will continue to work there 2-3 days a week (usually only 4 hours a day) even though he's off from the station.

The plan is for him to be at the hospital majority of the time but we live rather close so he may choose to go home to shower and change clothes if need be. I don't expect him to spend every waking second next to me once baby is born. It seems the typical amount if time allotted is about 24 hours after giving birth so we're just playing it by ear.
  • DH will be taking 3 days PTO. He is a teacher, so he really doesnt get vacation time in the same sense that I would get. If needed, he can also take sick time (caring for immediate family member) if there are complications. We are hoping when baby comes, the timing will allow him to have the 3 days + weekend.

I am hoping my stay at the hospital will be short so that we can bond at home. While I am in the hospital, DH will be with me during the days. At night, I will want him to go home to take care of the pets and spend some personal time unwinding.

I will be looking forward to the end of June when he will be home fulltime to help with LO, but in the meantime he needs to find a balance.

  • My H gets two weeks paternity leave and he's also taking a week vacation. So a total of three. We can't wait! Lots of bonding time and support for me. I am at a huge risk for ppd since I already have major depression and anxiety. So having him around will help me and he can help asses when and if I need to go back on meds.

As for the hospital. They let SO sleep in the other bed. But he plans on showering at home since we live 8 min from the hospital.

  • DH is taking off 5-7 days but will be checking in with work quite a bit and probably going on a few calls. The nature of his job doesn't really allow him to completely disconnect. He already has trips scheduled for the weeks immediately before and after the baby is here.

Based on DS's delivery, I'm gonna need all the help I can get physically
And both sets of grandparents are 5min away where DS can spend the night with them.

  • DH and I are both teachers and I'm scheduled for a c-section during finals week. We are both planning on taking that last week off and then we will have the whole summer. Now, hoping that LO follows that plan! DH has plenty of days banked that he could take off as long as he wants and still et paid. However, I don't. I had surgery 2 years ago and ran out of paid sick days, so we went about a month without me getting paid, which sucked balls. I've been on bedrest for the last week and am cleared to go back to work on Monday. So, now I'm super close to running out of days again. I'm hoping I can last the next 4 weeks at work so the money thing isn't an issue. I know that what will happen, will happen, and LO's health is paramount above anything else. It would just be less stressful if we didn't have to worry about money during these last days.

  • DH's boss asked him to take 3 days instead of the full work week we had planned.  Am I bummed?  A little bit.  But we always seem to find a way to make things work.

  • DH is in the military. He gets 10 days but his unit is really nice and is allowing him to add another week. If I have to have an emergency c section he gets 45 days off though.
  • We're lucky enough to live in one of the states that offer TCI on top of their TDI program, so DH will be able to take 4 weeks off with 2/3rds pay. He says he wants to stay at the hospital the whole time, but I think we'll play it by ear since we only live 20mins away.

  • DH is a business owner so while he's flexible, it's also really hard for him to be out of the office.  I imagine he'll take a week or so at home and then days here and there as business allows.

DH will take a week off from work, but he owns his own business so he will more than likely be working a lot from his phone and computer. I'm hopeful that he'll be able to relax a little bit on his hours after he goes back to work though, going in a little later and/or coming home a little earlier than usual.

ETA he'll stay at the hospital with me except to run home and feed our pets.

  • DH will take a week off, starting when baby is born. Then he'll go back to work for a week, and then take another week off after that. So, one week off, one on, then one off again....It worked out well last time with DD1, so that's the plan for #2 as well.

As for the hospital, he'll be there during the day but won't sleep there at night like the first time. Mostly because we have an almost 2yr old at home. With DD1, I felt like I needed him there at night, but as a STM, I feel more confident about being at the hospital alone at night with a newborn.

  • My DH took a week off with DD1. This time, we had the baby on Sunday, came home from the hospital on Tuesday, DH stayed home yesterday so I had help with our 2u2 and he is back at work today. My parents live 5 minutes away, so my mom picked us up and we are hanging out at her house all day. We will probably be at my parents house most days for the next couple weeks until I am healed and adjusted to life with a toddler and newborn! If we didn't have such strong family support he probably would have taken more time off.

He stayed at the hospital most of the time, but came home each day to shower, take the dog out, and just take a break from being stuck in the hospital. I didn't mind though, I got the baby snuggles to myself while he was gone. :)

  • DH is taking 2 weeks vacation starting when I go into labor. He'll stay at the hospital with me, with the exception of maybe running home once or twice to trade off dog-sitting duties with my mom or to grab stuff from the house.

  • I don't get any paid leave, so we need more than my husband's base pay, paycheck. He gets a differential if he actually works and doesn't use his earn time. So I told him when I go into labor he needs to take that night off of work. And after the baby is born he can go into work for that shift. And while I'm at the hospital I don't mind him working because, my mom, his mom and nurses will all be there. And then I could only convince him to take 3 days off when we come home. Maybe he'll take a few more days here and there throughout the summer, but who knows.
  • DH will be taking the first week off as vacation and working from home for another week after that.  I need all the help I can get with DS and a new baby.  Once he goes back to work, my mom will come over to help.  I'm more worried about taking care of DS and trying to recover from my c-section than taking care of the baby.  DS is a busy little guy and needs lots of attention and I don't want to push myself too hard.

DH is not staying at the hospital, I would rather him be home with DS to keep him in as much of a normal routine as possible.  And there's no sense in both of us being interrupted every hour by the nurses.  At least one of us will get good sleep!

  • DH is a High School Art Teacher and he can take up to 6 weeks off but he has to use personal days. He will be by my side until we get home from the hospital, and then he'll stay home for at least a week straight. After that he plans on going back 2 days a week just to teach the lessons (he won't need to be there for the projects). It's nice timing because their last day of school is May 30th.

He is taking 2 weeks off of work. My mom is coming out a week after so in case I have a c-section I will have a week over lap of two helpers.

He is also off half of the month of June for weddings/vacation--so we will be getting lots of family time. I'm super excited!

  • DH will take the time we are in the hospital off but due to having our own business he can't take much more than that off (our employee is not at a level to handle things very long alone). He'll also be taking our employee's calls during that time. If I end up with a c/s he will fill in the gaps between my mom staying and my grandma staying. I wish we could afford more but we're just not there right now.
  • DH gets a whooping 2 days paid paternity leave. He has three weeks vacation and will use one week, but once we're home from the hospital he can use "office days" and work from home so he may not have to take a full week off. He's hoping to come and go from the hospital this time... I dont think he plans on sleeping there with me as long as thigs go well. We'll have to see how L&D goes this time around.
  • He is planning to take the first week we are home off. When I am in the hospital he may go into work for an hour or so just to not have to take leave. His work is near the hospital and we will have grandparents in town to watch ds1 and bring him to the hospital. If I go early he will definitely have to go into work because he has a massive grant due and while others can do the legwork he is the only one who can finalize it and sign off. After the first week he will take off half days or whole days throughout the summer to get in bonding time and let me sleep ;)

  • Hubby is planning on taking 2 weeks vacation when Amelia arrives. Although he's probably gonna work during the day while I'm in the hospital (except during the labor and at least a few hours afterwards until his and my parents make it in). His aunt is actually a nurse for the L&D I'll be at and she works nights and a good family friend works during the day. So we're really set with help from the nursing staff there (even if they aren't my assigned nurse, they'll be there a lot!). He wanted to take paternity leave, but work told him that he has to use up all his personal/sick/vacation days first. Which he can't do because he needs to save a few days for when he *hopefully* gets a call back to travel to Myrtle Beach for the second round of interviews for PD. Crappy thing is timing for that... he's expecting his call back around the time I'm due!

DH is taking 2 weeks like he did with the first. The first week seemed to fly by with most of it being delivery and hospital stay and a blur, so I was glad to have him the second week too!

This time he is going home after delivery and everything calms down to be with DD, but if that weren't the case I would want him with me like he did with the first just to help. And I know he really enjoyed those first few days to spend with his new baby!
