I think the 4MW is made up. Of course babies get more alert as they get older. That's all it is, it's not a period of time that ends, it's just part of growing up.
I love Easter and don't believe in Christ. It's more a celebration of spring to me.
Peeps are gross. Cadbury eggs rule.
I don't like 80s movies.
We did extinction CIO for ds2 and it saved all of us.
Cue record scratch: like... none of them?
Like any movies made in the 80's or like 80's pop-culture-y movies?
"Dont fucking ever come out your face talking shit like that" -SG 1/12/2014
None that I can think of. I don't like John Hughes movies, never seen space balls or goonies. I kinda like back to the future though just the first one
I don't understand why people would celebrate Easter for non religious purposes
Because Reese's eggs. Duh.
I am religious, but there are a lot of secular things to do to celebrate Easter. Dying eggs, the Easter bunny, egg hunts, baskets, etc. People can enjoy all of those things without thinking about Jesus.
I am not religious, and I love easter for the eggs, hunts, and also just a celebration of spring! Plus... chocolate! I also sometimes participate in lent, mostly just as an exercise in abstaining from something that I feel I am too dependent on.
Exactly. Eggs, the bunny... all those things that represent Christ's resurrection are also just a celebration of Spring, new life, etc.
Sure, they're a symbol of that to you, but to me they are just colorful eggs and silly bunny rabbits. I'm with you on the celebration of spring and new life. Since I don't believe in Christ (UO? FFFC?) then they don't carry any further weight.
Not just me. I understand that you use it to celebrate spring but you can't argue where it originates from ( you in general )
The same goes for Christmas. I think a lot of people celebrate and partake in traditions that all stem from religious symbols. the 12 days of Christmas was a song created to teach the religion without being prosecuted for it. As a religious person I hold these holidays very close to my heart. It's sad it's commercialized to the extent it is. So many people have died over religious beliefs. I thank God we have the freedom of religion. Anyway Celebration of life is good.
But we can argue where it originates from. These celebrations predate Christianity...not the other way around.
It doesn't bother me when other women call me 'hun' or 'sweetheart'. I have never found it condescending.
And just to irritate KateMW - peeps are the most disgusting candy evarr.
With the Peeps I am with you 1000x.....ugh they are nasty. My oldest DD brought a cupcake home from school yesterday with a peep on top. TOTALLY ruined the cupcake IMO.
Because the peep wasn't removable.
it was removable but the sugary stuff from the peep had gotten onto the icing and to me that is gross, that is all.
We did extinction with ds1 at 6 months (?i think...maybe later) and it was well worth it. The first night is tough. But it lasted 4 days. And he has been a fantastic sleeper since.

--- I feel like we had this same argument in December. Basically all Christian holidays were coopted from earlier pagan holidays.
Not having an argument. How religious celebrations were adopted does NOT make them many less significant to religious people. Today is Holy Thursday tomorrow is Good Friday and then Easter Sunday. It's an observance of a Christian Holiday marked on your calendar as such. How you ( in general ) choose to celebrate it is your choice but please do not take away the meaning of it because of where when and how it was adopted into Christianity.
On Easter/Christmas... I think it was a PR thing. They're spreading the word , bringing people to Christ... Instead of convincing people they need to give up pagan holidays and celebrations, work the new belief system into the old one. Revamp it. Politics. And I'm not sure, but I think a lot of it happened under Constantine who may or may not have been a Christian merely for political gains. I'd need to read more to be sure when the actual celebrations evolved.

As a Jew, the name Constantine sends shivers up the spine.

All we did was discuss its history. Is history somehow offensive?
Steel Magnolias is such a sobfest. I watch it whenever I need a good cry.
I could quote every line by the time I was 6 or 7 years old. I played Shelby twice when I was still acting. I still cry like a baby every time I see it. Even more so since Jackson arrived. (And yes, he's kinda named after the character in the movie.)

@Loolaide once again the offensive thing. Why do you feel I was offended? This is the second or third time you think i am offended somehow. Believe me I am not.
I simply felt as though the post was being taking way off my original point. It seemed to be turning into which was first and where and how it came about. @Meggie0421 was trying to tell me that she will argue that it wasn't Christianity. That was never my "argument". My opinion was about Easter being a religious holiday.

Why does this even need to be an argument?
--- Because you're acting offended. If you aren't, there's no reason to keep harping on it. Pagan holidays aren't really religious in the Abrahamic sense, so it's not entirely accurate to say it's a religious holiday at its core, BTW.
Lol. I didn't know answering your direct question to me and meggies question was "harping on it" I thought that was merely answering a question asked. But call it as you like. Ok note to self about Easter not entirely being a religious holiday. Gotcha
Now If you don't have anymore questions for me about this , I am done.
Okay I'll give you steel magnolias and the muppets. The others..meh. I like modern film even though I was born in the 70s. Still trying to get over December moms born in the 90s.
My dh is in seminary to be a pastor and I can tell you without doubt that both Easter and Christmas were pagan holidays that Christians turned religious so the masses wouldnt cry foul and would be more easy to convert. All you ladies getting your panties in a twist over commercialization answer this. Do you do Santa and the Easter bunny? If they are so religious to you then you shouldnt.
Me either. Maybe its because I wasn't alive in the 80's, but I don't have the desire to either.
A good movie is a good movie regardless of the year it was made. If you have seen them and don't like them that's one thing but just to write them off based their age is weird to me. I was born in 1980 and there are some great 70's movies I've seen and even some great classics from that decade that are still on my list to see (ahem Godfather..I know I know). I'm just sayin, branch out....you never know

DH and I enjoy old James Bond (the Sean Connery ones) and Dirty Harry movies. I enjoy old Paul Newman movies and Alfred Hitchcock movies too
More good/classic movies older than me that I've seen and enjoyed: Star Wars (obviously) Rocky Grease Close encounters of the third kind Jaws One flew over the cuckoos nest Superman And of course Saturday Night Fever. Who doesn't love John Travolta dancing to the Bee Gees?
I will show my kids old Disney movies, Mary Poppins, sound of music. Anyone remember Bedknobs and Broomsticks? Lol

@hercules03 I didnt say that as a Christian you can't do Santa but all these people getting annoyed by how it's commercialized or how nonreligious people celebrate need to think about that because Santa is a part of the commercialization. You can't be all pissy about it being a solely religious holiday and then celebrate the non religious parts too. That's called being a hypocrite. If you want to do both great but don't act like nonreligious people are wrong.

We were separated at birth, you and me. I frequently sing portobello road! I bought My toddler that one and chitty chitty bang bang. My husband has never seen either. A travesty for certain.

Ha yes. And the song under the sea are the ones that get stuck in my head. My husband has never seen Mary Poppins all the way through. I can't even

That would be EPIC!
No to Sleepers outside of the house
No to CIO ever
Yes to Easter and Reese's eggs
No to Cadbury eggs and peeps

We say this at LEAST once a week at my work.
