Temper tantrums at meal time

XP from 9-12 month. Anybody else dealing with this already? My non-picky dd use to eat just about everything we put in front of her now throws temper tantrums if she doesn't like what I give her. She flat out refuses some foods and will spit out or not even try even if it's something I know she likes and has eaten before. I didn't think this started until closer to 2! So frustrating.

Re: Temper tantrums at meal time

  • No food tantrums yet with the baby, except when we aren't fast enough to refill her tray. She has the appetite of a 16 year old boy. The toddler is definitely picky though. Just keep offering a good variety. She won't starve; if she's hungry, she'll find something to eat out of what you offer her.

Just don't make the mistake of being a short order cook and making special meals for her. My teenaged nieces are still terribly picky eaters as a result of that. Good luck!

  • I guess it could be her teeth but it has been going on for a few weeks now and has gradually gotten worse.  She use to love bananas, any kind of beans, cheerios, yogurt, and fruit with oatmeal and now she refuses them.  Saturday we grilled chicken and asparagus with mushrooms and she loved it.  Last night she refused to eat any of the left overs and screamed her head off even though I know she was hungry. I'll continue to offer a variety of things and hope this is just a phase.  Definetly not going the short order cook route!
  • Rhys doesn't throw tantrums exactly, he has been doing what you described... spitting out and refusing foods that I KNOW he likes and has eaten before. I just keep offering it to him. I'll offer him 2 or 3 things at a meal (like a protein, a veggie, etc.), but I am not giving him anything else, so some nights he eats a little less if he is being fussy. It's so frustrating!

  • Yes, we're dealing with some of this now -- after eating like a horse for the past 5 months... I think that he's just all screwed up with teething and the transition to whole cow's milk... ie, he used to mostly subsist on formula and food was just a "bonus" and now we've moved to significantly less milk/ bottles and relying more on food and he's not used to it, plus he LIKES taking his bottles and is used to just guzzling them for instant hunger-relief... along with that, the WCM has made him very constipated so we're working on that... he's getting molars right now too and trying to learn a sippy cup so it is just a lot all at once.

I'm home from work with him today, so I've been trying different stuff... What worked well for us today was a small bottle right away upon waking (just 4 oz as opposed to his usual 6-8 oz bottle), and then a break and then breakfast -- so he wasn't stuffed from his big bottle, but also wasn't freaked out and starving.  Good luck.
