I PLAN ON GETTING MY CHILD VACCINATED TO KEEP THEM PROTECTED .. JUST WHILE IM PREGNANT I CHOOSE NOT TO! THERE ARE SOME CHILDREN WHO GET THE VACCINE AND GET SICK! BUT ITS BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. I DONT FEED INTO THE POST THESE CELEBS HAVE THEY NEED SOMEONE TO BLAME

HOW AM I UNEDUCATED WHEN I HAVE TWO DEGREES! cause i said i didnt want to get myself vaccinated? i did not see that the post was talking about children .. i WILL vaccinate my children thats just smart to keep them protected

@GPeterson24, until my children have had at least their first round of shots, I do ask the people we will be seeing if their children have been vaccinated. Sadly, this means my children (C, and soon to be Charlie) do not get to meet their own cousins until mine are at least two months and have had the first round. My brother and his ex don't vax their girls. They are constantly sick (potentially unrelated as they tend to be sick a lot with the common cold, not vaccinated diseases, but nevertheless), and I have no way of telling if it's the common cold or pertussis or something worse. Children are often contagious before they show symptoms, so they could appear perfectly healthy and still give my newborn something nasty. I'm not willing to risk it. In Charlie's case, he won't get to meet them until he's over a year old, because he's due early June and they are moving out of country for a year before he'll have had his two month shots. I'm not willing to compromise on this. Once my children have their vaccines, I rely on the safety of those vaccines to keep them safe in the event that they play with a non-vaccinated child, so I no longer feel the need to ask.

Unless your two degrees are in the medical field, you can still be uneducated in this regard. I'm an English major...I am horribly uneducated when it comes to math/science.

that is true yes, my response should have been what makes me uneducated, but i see that she just has strong views on this topic and others on this site as well. so ill let her bash for whatever reason or satisfaction she finds in it!

I'm lurking from BBOTB/TTGP, but I've come with opinions:

Solo-> Keeping your children protected includes getting yourself vaccinated before you get pregnant. Rubella, or German measles, can cause profound congenital defects if you get it while pregnant. There's a list in this SOGC guideline of the congenital defects it can cause. I'd like to draw your attention to "Ventral Septal Defect" in particular.... it means that the muscle layer that divides two of the 4 chambers in baby's heart doesn't form, and requires cardiac surgery to fix.... (google a picture of pediatric sternotomy for a visual).

You can't get vaccinated once you're already pregnant (because it's a live attenuated vaccine; MMR).

Andrew Wakefield's 1998 paper (linking Autism and MMR) was found to be fraudulent. He was dismissed as a physician, and no longer practices medicine. Even if you thought that MMR causes Autism (it doesn't, but if YOU did), there's 0 chance of you developing Autism as an adult.

It's unlikely you'll contract Rubella when pregnant. However, for the price of getting an MMR jab, you're rolling the dice with open heart surgery on a newborn (amongst a long list of other complications).

Not knowing this DOESN'T make you uneducated, but it does mean that you're making decisions without all the important information.

(As always, I'm not suggesting anyone should take medical advice from a stranger on the internet. This post is merely an opinion)

We selectively vaccinate our children but I've never had anyone at a play group or birthday party ask about their status. If you're truly that passionate wouldn't you want to keep your kids away from my "potentially dangerous" kids?

Was it really even an issue before though?
It was a requirement at all the schools I attended to be up to date with our vaccines, so all the kids I hung out with and all the friends I had growing up all had our vaccinations.

Close friends of my bf and I are not vaccinating their baby and we've (the bf and I) agreed that our little one will not be hanging out around him. Bums me out since we really like these people, but I care more about my son's health.

I am honestly disgusted that this is even a debate. Vaccinate so that the ones that can't are also protected. Duh.

Me too. I'm disgusted by non-vaxers and even delayers. All idiots. Vaccinate your children for the sake of public health and the safety of our society. Period.
