How far along are you? How is your baby measuring?

I just went to the Dr. yesterday and I am 33 weeks and measuring 30 cm.  He has always mentioned that this baby is a lot smaller than my last one (he was 8.4 pounds and 1 week early).  He suggested I have an ultrasound in two weeks to make sure the baby is growing.  I am getting really nervous and wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

  • At 27 weeks, my fundal height was 25 cm. No one commented on it at all. Is your doctor really concerned about that one measurement or is there more to this story? Because those numbers are not hard and fast, there is always some error associated with them just as there is with ultrasound measurements. If you have a pattern of measuring behind, on the other hand, that could be something to be concerned about.

  • I have been measuring a little behind every visit which made me think my due date was just off. My Dr normally says it's normal to be a little small.  But this time he seemed more concerned than usual.
  • Ah, ok. Is your EDD based just on your LMP date? In that case, it could be off.

My doctor said earlier on that the key thing is to have a consistent pattern of growth in the measurements. Maybe your doctor is seeing something in the pattern that concerns him? Try not to worry too much until you see what the ultrasound shows and go from there. Good luck!

  • I'm 33w3d and I just measured at 39cm today. I have to go in for an ultrasound to check fluid level/baby size next Tuesday but I have measured "ahead" the whole pregnancy except for 2 weeks ago when I was within range at 31weeks/33cm but I'm 99.99% sure that's because he had moved transverse (he's head down now finally). He was average size and fluid was average at my last ultrasound at 25 weeks. Fundal height is not a great indicator of baby's size.
  • At my last appointment (30+5) I was measuring 31 1/2. But at previous appointments sometimes I was right on, other times a cm behind. I'm not worried about it because at least for me, when baby changes positions, the shape and size of my abdomen varies greatly. I had a growth US for different reasons around 28 weeks and he was measuring a week ahead. That was also one of the weeks I was measuring behind with fundal height.
  • I'm 32 weeks and yesterday at my appointment I measured 34 cm.  OB did not seem concerned but did order a growth scan sono to double check.  I'm not worried and neither is he.  Could just be the way the baby was positioned or a growth spurt or any number of reasons.

General rule of thumb, if your OB isn't worried, you probably shouldn't be either.  All babies are different and all pregnancies are different.
      Hope everything turns out alright!
    this.

I'm 34 weeks, and measuring 36 weeks. MW says I have a large volume of amniotic fluid. not good, not gad. just an observation.

try not to worry: stress definitely won't help.
  • If your fundal height is plus or minus two cm of your weeks of gestation that is considered "normal".  If you are above or below this range they will generally get a growth scan, especially if you had been in the range and are now outside.  Don't stress, it is pretty standard.

  • Dumb FTM Q's but is this where they just measure your belly at the OBs office? I measured small on my last one if those and she ordered a growth scan. She didn't tell me the measurement tho. LO is right in track with legs measuring 4 wks ahead lol. I think everyone carries so differently it would be really hard to judge belly measurements....

Sigh. Single growth scans in the third tri are known to notoriously be "off". Don't stress and good luck!

  • You ladies are so helpful thank you! My due date is based on my lmp. I did have food poisoning last week, maybe that could've contributed as well? The dr also said the baby was now head down so that could be it too, I never thought of that!

  • Like PP said, if your OB isn't worried then you should be either.

I've been consistently 2 weeks behind on fundal height since 25 weeks and am expecting to measure 32 weeks at my 34 week appointment this Thursday. My baby was 38th percentile at 28 weeks though, so I'm not worried. Small babies/tums run in both our families.

  • At 28 weeks, I measured 26 cm. my doctor ordered a growth scan due to a previous history of IUGR. I had my growth scan a week later and LO was exactly on track at 3lbs, 2oz, 49th percentile.

Keep in mind fundal height isn't an exact science, there's human error involved. My OB had a PA with him and she measured my fundal height and had me at 31 cm (at my 29 week appt), he then measured and got exactly 29 cm.

    Try not to stress.

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  My doctor said you can measured 2 weeks behind or ahead and it is still considered average.  At 31 weeks, I was measuring 33 weeks with fundal height, but no one was worried.
  • My measurements flip flop as well. One time DS was 2 weeks ahead (growth sonogram) then the next couple of weeks the fundal measurement was right on track. I just got back from another growth sonogram (I have GD, so that's why I'm getting a lot)  and he weighs 3.15 lbs at 31 weeks. The tech said he's a little big, but I'm sure my next appt. he'll be right on track again. As a FTM it's confusing and of course you worry or wonder why. But babies grow at different rates and they go through growth spurts, so it's always going to be a little off.

  • Iv measured ahead since the beginning and at my last test she measured me and said I was measuring big so she ordered an ultrasound.....she never mentioned a number but from a lot of mommies iv talked too it seems pretty common....im not too worried just excited to see my lil man again on the big screen :)

  • I'm 32 weeks just got out of my ultrasound and she's measuring 4 lbs 10oz.
  • I wouldn't worry about it. There is a large margin of error in how they calculate these things. Last week, my OB measured me at 36cm (32w1d). Had ultrasound this morning to check how far off his growth is, and it's actually more like 1 week ahead rather than 4 weeks ahead. As long as they are keeping an eye on it, you're okay.

  • At 32 weeks last week LO was measuring 33cm by fundal height. We had an ultrasound to check mild kidney dilatation and LO was 2 weeks ahead for head and abdomen circumference and nearly a week behind on humerus and femur length. Overall avg was 4lbs14oz. I'm hoping this kid doesn't come out a bobble head.

  • At 30 weeks I measured 31 and at 32 weeks they found my amniotic fluid was high. Baby girl measures in the 50th percentile with really long femur bones. Tech says she has lots of fluid moving room and isn't cramped at all.

I usually measure about 2 weeks ahead; have with all 3 of my kids.  Staying consistant with this little one.

  • When I was about 28 weeks or so I was measuring 4 weeks behind.  Went for an ultrasound and the baby was just in a weird transverse-type position but was perfect on the growth charts.  Baby is now head down but I'm still measuring 2-3 weeks small at every appointment.  My doctor is not worried at all.

  • 34 weeks, measuring 2 weeks ahead. I've been about 2-3 weeks ahead for the past month.
  • I measured behind more than once. The doctor said the baby was probably just small. I went for an ultrasound last week. She's not small; I'm just holding her in somehow. :)  I'm glad I stayed away form Dr. Google and trusted my doctor.

  • My OB said that you should be within 2 cm of the week you are on. So at 33 weeks you could be 31 or 35. I was measuring small at 32 weeks for the second time so she did an ultrasound and everything was just fine. In fact she was a little bigger than average.

  • 34w today. The last couple weeks she's been measuring 3 or so weeks ahead. U/s at 32w estimated her at 6lbs.

  • My last pregnancy my DS measured 2 weeks behind for the second half of my pregnancy. My doctor never seemed worried and I surprisingly still had a 8 lb. 7oz. baby at 39 weeks 3 days. It's probably just how the baby is laying in your belly :)
  • At 32 weeks I was 33cm at 34 weeks I'm 35cm. She felt around and said if she had to guess she's about 5lbs right now and will probably be 7-8lbs. But she also said that's just a guess based on how she feels in my belly.

I measured 30 for fundus height her heart rate was 148 at my 32 week appt. The doc also mentioned she had dropped so that has something to do with it.

Well whaddya know? I had my 34 week appointment this morning and am measuring 32 weeks. As long as baby is growing, it's nothing to worry about. If the gap between weeks was getting bigger then it may be cause for concern.

  • Well when my belly was measured at 27 weeks it was measuring 27 weeks. Don't know the exact measurements though

    It's a BOY

  • At 33 weeks I was measuring 31 cm but Dr said she felt baby was growing well! No worries!
  • When I was 26 weeks I measured 23cm, got sent for a growth scan and baby was measuring exactly where he/she should be and was in the 65th percentile.  At my 32 week appointment I was measuring 29cm but she's going to wait to see my measurements at my 34 week appointment before sending me for another growth scan.  I personally don't think it's necessary after how good the last growth scan was but I'll do what she says as she's the expert.

  • @rocknroll64 I had something similar happen to me at my last appt. I've been measuring on track this whole time, and then I have to see the PA and she orders another growth scan because she was thought IUGR could be a possibility b/c I'm short. I'm not that short. She said bebe measured 25-30% range and wanted to make sure he continued to grow. I'm pretty sure that range is quite a bit above IUGR status.

Then she measured my belly and it was 30cm at 30wks. Booyah.

I've had another rush of hormones/morning sickness this week, so I'm hoping he has hit a growth spurt and proves her wrong. I need to stick with my regular Dr.
