Lectured by my OB

Re: Lectured by my OB

  • Your OB sounds like a total meanie. I was chubby to begin with and I have 20 lbs in 26 weeks and 5 days. My doctor put it to me this way...she would be ok if I didn't gain anymore weight from now until I gave birth but would not be concerned if I gained another 10 before he gets here. As long as what I am eating is nutritionally sound with the occasional treat. She wants me to keep up daily walks but never put me down during any visit. You are LUCKY to have only gained 10. When you give birth you will snap back into your pre preggo jeans lol. Meanwhile I'll still be a blob. If you and your baby are healthy then you are surely blessed.

  • Please! I started at 140lbs with my first pregnancy too. I gained 50lbs. My OB never batted an eye at my weight gain- I delivered at 41 weeks and had a healthy 8lb13oz and went on to BF her for 15 months. So... The point is your body is going to gain what it needs too. And I agree, as long as you are not eating crap all day long and are active- it's not a problem. Keep your head up!
  • Your OB deserves to be throat punched! My OB never comments on too much weight, just to little. 5 pounds in a week is nothing - I could do that in a week

  • That's ridiculous!! I haven't gained 10lbs yet and my doctor wants me to gain weight! She told me I need to gain at least another 15lbs. She even said that if someone was over weight pre-pregnancy that they should gain at least 15lbs during their pregnancy. Yes, we all should be eating healthier but to lecture you that you gained 5lbs is horrible! That is a perfectly normal amount. Shame on her!
  • Tell your doctor that Beyonce weighed 190 when she gave birth. I'm just saying...
  • I'm glad I don't have your OB because I gained more than 5lbs last month and I have been eating pretty unhealthily. And the midwife didn't say a word to me about it (to my relief).

I'm sorry she was so crazy about it. Like you don't have enough to worry about.

  • Um, I didn't gain a pound until about 21 weeks.  I had an appt this weekend, too, and I was up 11 pounds in just 4 weeks.  My m/w said everything looked good and to keep doing what I'm doing!  I haven't gained weight anywhere buy my belly, so it's fine.

This is actually one of the reasons that I stopped seeing my OB and switched to a m/w practice.  When I went to my initial appt with my OB she told me that I should only gain 15 pound MAX throughout my entire pregnancy.  I literally LOLed in her face.  Fat aside, 7-8 lbs of baby alone, water weight, placenta, expanding uterus....that's easily 20 lbs at minimum for the entire pregnancy.  These OBs are sometimes dillusional when it comes to weight gain.  It's not realistic.  I wouldn't take it to heart and just ignore her.  Unless you were like 30 lbs up at this point, screw her.  Also, 5 lbs in one month at this point is completely normal and on track.  Again...screw her.

Wow! What a witch! I gained 4lbs by 20 weeks then 10 more at my 24 week check up. I was worried as I was only supposed to gain 15-20 for the entire pregnancy but my OB wasn't concerned at all, in fact all she asked was if I felt ok, any pain/swelling etc. She said stuff like that happens and its only unhealthy if the entire pregnancy goes like that.

  • Just thought of this...at your next appt you should roll up with Whataburger and Fries and a milkshake and eat it in front of her! And if she says something be like "the baby wants it and ill do what my baby wants" lol and you can tell her your MANY friends agree you have not even gained enough weight so you are going to eat what u want, when u want! :p
  • My midwife didn't ask me what I weighed when I started. Hasn't asked or talked about weight gain period. Takes one look at me and says I'm doing great. The great weight debate is ridiculous. Should only be brought up if YOU are concerned. Period. Sorry you went thru this, shrug it off and ignore :)
This exactly what my midwife does too! She says weight gain is very little indication of a healthy or unhealthy pregnancy (within reason, which the OP clearly is, of course). She has never asked me how much I weighed before pregnancy and I don't expect her to ask me ever. There is a scale in the bathroom at the office but the first time I went I was told it was only for your own use, check or not, whatever I feel is right for me.

As long as you are eating (fairly) healthy and staying a bit active, and you are feeling okay, then I wouldn't worry about your weight gain at all. And I would find a new care provider.

  • OK, yeah, your doc needs to get their head out of their ass! I started at about 240 (I have the lapband, and weight has always been an issue with me), and have gained almost 30 pounds so far, and the ONLY person who is worried with how much I've gained is me. NONE of my doctors (there are a lot, mind you) have said anything like that. Everyone's body is different, as evidence by previous posts. If your doc says anything like that to you again, I would suggest switching OBs/MWs IMMEDIATELY, as this person is completely clueless to the human body, IMO.

  • That sounds absurd! I've gained 30lbs already & I seem to be the only one concerned, the nurses and my OB say I'm fine.  I gained 5lbs just from week 24 to week 28.  They only care about if it is "healthy" weight gain, not the actual number of lbs.

Me too! 30 lbs! And my OBs office is like great! Measuring right on track! Meanwhile I am making my husband eat ice cream so I don't end up weighing more than him. I'm 150 right now. He's short.

I gained 40 lbs with DD. She was born at 39w - 6lb. 5oz. She is still super petite (but so am I). I lost 45 lbs by the time she was 7 months old. My body is gaining what it needs to gain.
  • That's crazy! I've gained about 20 pounds and am a day shy of 29 weeks. My OB was worried when I had only gained 5 pounds by 20 weeks. 15 pounds since then seems a lot to me. But they didn't seem worried so I'm not either.

My OB has been on me a bit about the weight gain too. I think they're just stuck on the whole picture perfect model. At 22 weeks I had gained 22 lbs. my weight gain has been pretty consistent with me weeks so far. Anyway, despite having "incredible" blood pressure (her words) and a good low blood sugar, she likes to remind me that "we're really aiming for only 30lbs here". Guess what lady.... It's just not going to happen. This kid is going to be huge and I'm gaining what my body needs to gain. I'm still wearing my pre-pregnancy jeans and pants with them zipped and buttoned! If I gain 40, I gain 40. I know I can lose it all after.
