Lectured by my OB

So I went to my appointment yesterday and when I stepped on the scale it said 150
i disnt think much of it since I'm in my 3rd trimester now and I've only gained 10lbs so far
but when my dr saw my weight she started going off
she was like are you eating bread, rice, potatoes, corn, drinking juice, soda and eating candy? I was like I rarely eat candy and no soda but yes to everything else. & she goes IT NEEDS TO STOP! No more! You gained too much weight in the last month (5lbs)
so I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through this. I'm 27weeks & 4days so a few days shy of my 3rd trimester.

  • I have gained 22 pounds and my ob wasn't upset, my doctor DH wasn't super impressed but I could care less about his opinion hahaha.
  • You OB is nuts.  I've gained 27 at almost 29 weeks and my dr hasn't said a thing this time around.  He did the first time around but I ended up gaining 50 lbs with DD#1 and everything was fine with her and me.

  • I have never once, in three pregnancies, been lectured by my OB about weight gain. I gained 40 lbs in both my prior pregnancies and will be close to that again this time, I'm sure. As long as you're eating mostly healthy and getting exercise, I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Eff that!

I'm larger than you and have gained 20 pounds. I'm eating healthy, but this is just what my body is doing. My MW is not concerned.

    image

  • that's insane! I gained 50 lbs in my first pregnancy and never heard a peep from my OB about it because
I gained steadily and ate reasonably it's just what my body needed to gain. this time I'm 27 weeks and have gained 20 lbs (last time I checked) so it sounds to me like you're doing great and right on target for normal healthy weight gain!
  • It's amazing how all OBs have different "rules" about weight gain. My OB said by 3rd tri she'd like to see the average weight woman gain 18 lbs. When I had my last appointment (last week) she was happy to see that I had gained 10 lbs that month because it put me right at 18 lbs total weight gain.

  • I gained 5 lbs in 3 weeks... I'm already up 15 lbs. they didn't seem concerned at all.. Said I looked healthy. Maybe your OB was just being a moody bitch
  • Maybe she was having a bad day? I gained a lot more with my first and my OB didn't day a word. And how is corn a bad food to eat?
  • That's crazy.  I have gained 25 pounds so far and my doctor specifically told me she thought my weight gain was perfectly healthy and normal.  Even if your doctor is legitimately concerned about your gain, what an inapprorpriate way to approach it.  I'm sorry she was so rude.
  • Your doctor sounds like she has no idea what she's talking about.  That's pretty sad.  It's bad enough that women have body image issues when they're not pregnant; it's pretty pathetic that even doctors contribute to women having poor body image while they are pregnant and supposed to be gaining and growing!

Anything up to approx. 40 pounds is considered healthy and normal.  And every body, every pregnancy, and every situation is different.  Some people gain very little.  Others gain quite a bit more.  I gained 55 with my first, and that wasn't ideal, but when my water broke it went on for about 18 hours. I retained a LOT of fluid. So some of my excess weight had to do with that.  This time around, I am not on track to gain 55, but as I said, every pregnancy is different. Even for the same exact person one year apart!

I would take offense to someone claiming that small total amount of weight you've gained is a lot.  It isn't.  All that does is make you question yourself in a terrible way and that's not right in my book.

  • That's ridiculous, I gained 8 pounds this month and my dr did mention it, BUT he also knows the same thing happened with DS, one month I gained 8lbs the next I lost half a pound. Your body does what it needs to do and I would've been insulted if she acted like that.
  • I had only gained 12 pounds until I went to my apt yesterday. My doctor said I gained 7 pounds in one month to be careful but he was kind about it. He said if I had a lot of salt then it's probably just water. I gained between 31-35 my last 2 pregnancies and I think that will probably happen again. I don't like when I hear doctors or nurses being so mean about it. I didn't want to gain too much in one month it just happened. I didn't do anything different.
  • At my last appointment at 25 weeks, 2 days, I stood on the scale at my OB's office and it said 154. I started out at 127. And my OB said not a word. In fact, in all my visits, she's never mentioned weight at all. I get the impression that, beyond obvious issues - ie, gaining WAY to much or WAY to little - she really doesn't care. Her scale is a household digital bathroom scale that rocks unpleasantly when you step on it. Almost guaranteed to be inaccurate.

    Your OB is definitely overreacting.

  • I went from no weight gain to 10 lbs over 8 weeks.  My OB didn't blink.  Since I'm seeing multiple docs in the practice, one actually said that I'm right on track.  I always think that's funny since they weigh me fully clothed with my shoes on.  I wonder how things will change as we move closer to warm weather and lighter clothes.

  • I would also like to point out that at my last visit, I had to change exam rooms and the difference between one scale and another was almost 6 pounds. Not every scale is calibrated exactly the same.

  • Well, I certainly could eat healthier than I have been but my midwife actually said I'm doing really well the last time I went.  I was up approximately 22lbs at almost 27 weeks on March 4th.  And I weighed 165lbs and am 5'5''.  I had a different OB with DD over 7 years ago that did lecture me with on weight gain.  Unfortunately, I didn't listen.  Hey, I was young and naive.  Then again, I gained over 50lbs with her and she was 8lbs15oz.  Thankfully my midwife assures me I'm no where on track to gain 50lbs this time.

  • Yikes. I think the next time I saw her I would ask her to expound upon her reaction and then tell her you were seriously off-put by her bedside manner. It is her job to ensure you're eating healthfully but there is a right and wrong way to go about it. Shaming is not the right way.

  • Same as PPs above--I'd tell your OB where she can go with that attitude.  I've been worried about my weight gain since my diet is not great, my activity is limited, and I started out overweight (~180lbs).  At my last appoinment (27 weeks) I weighed in at 209, and my doctor said nothing.  I've seen multiple doctors in the practice and asked at every appointment, and they have all said that I'm perfectly fine.  Anyone shaming you over 5 pounds in a month has some serious issues, and I'm not sure that I'd feel comfortable with their judgment in general.

  • Please tell me you told your OB to FO. I would have walked!

  • Hi! I kind of had the same experience. I have really been struggling with gaining weight. I even lost weight around Christmas time. So my last appt. I was trying really hard to EAT. So I started at 115 and was finally 136 at 19 weeks. I thought she'd be proud of me. She was not. She told me no more junk food. I was like OMG I'm not eating junk food (except those girl scout cookies) :) I was just forcing myself to eat meals when I wasn't hungry. So now I am hovering just under 140 and I'm scared I didn't slow down enough.

  • I gained back the 15 lbs I lost during my first two trimesters. The only reason they worried about mine is because it was 15 in 5 weeks. 4 lbs in 4 days. It's water weight so that's why. And my BP is going up. Just watching salt and sugar really close now.

Get a new OB. Is this who you want for the rest if your time?
  • I'm up two pounds, which the nurse pointed out to me quite loudly since I was losing weight instead of gaining but hadn't lost much to begin with and definitely wasn't trying to lose but my doctors didn't complain with me gaining or losing because I'm heavier to begin with, plus with my pregnancy #1 I gained one pound over my pre preg weight, preg #2 I gained 14. So this time I'm trying to keep my gain minimal but not dieting or anything except for GD guidelines, so if I was you I would tell your doc to F Off OP.
  • I can't believe your doc said that! I'm so sorry you had to deal with that but as PPs have said you are totally right on track.
That's a horrible thing for the doc to bring up when it's not even a medical issue affecting you or the baby. I would consider switching docs, especially if this is a habit.
  • I did not, it's my first pregnancy so I was just kinda scared. I was like omg I'm eating too much??? What? But then again I've read that at this point in pregnancy it's normal to gain anywhere between 4-8 lbs per month. I'm just gunna try & lay off the sugar because apparently I'm also consuming too much fruit. :(

  • Wow. I think I gained like 5lbs a month every month with DD and nobody said anything to me. With this pregnancy I've only gained 12lbs total. In the last month each baby gained over a pound and I only gained 1lb. Nobody has said anything about that either. Doctors are so random. As long as your baby is healthy and growing on track I don't see why it matters, just me though :-/

  • I call shenanigans. It would be one thing if your weight was endangering your health but 150 pounds? Who cares?

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Yup, absurd. I've gained 25 lbs at 28 weeks and my OB said I was doing great.

I also find it interesting that they didn't ask you about what you diet was like before you gained weight (a totally normal amount). Just because you only gained 10 lbs during a pregnancy doesn't mean you were eating super healthy. Just like if you gained 40 it doesn't mean you were stuffing you face with donuts. Every body gains weight at a different rate.

  • Maybe the real problem is that your ob cannot do simple math in her head.   Or can't read.   Both of which are problematic in their own way, but at least then you can feel better that she wasn't trying to mess with your self-image on purpose.

  • I'd find a new doctor. With my first, I gained 28 lbs total. All in the first 6-7 months. I gained nothing the last 2 months. But, I remember one month when I had gained 6 months and my doctor just mentioned that they like to see it closer to 1/2 lb to 1 lb per month.  But it was just my body doing it's thing.

This time around, I'm at 27 weeks and I've gained 26 lbs already. I'm betting I'll gain another 2-5 lbs and be done. And last appt, I had gained 8 lbs in a month. Again, just my body doing it's thing.  Every pregnancy is different, and everybody's body is different. Some women gain only 10 lbs their whole pregnancy, others gain 40, 50, 60 or more. As long as you and baby are healthy you're fine.

  • @lara0802 - half pound to a pound per month?  Man, I would be in big trouble at that doctor.  I can gain a half a pound just THINKING about food.

It just happened now, in fact.

  • I've gained 40 lbs since I conceived, but since doc started tracking me, more like 30-35, and I ask HIM about it and he says it's a vanity issue and to get over it. He said and I quote " I've had 250lb women give birth to perfectly healthy babies and 110 lb women give birth to totally healthy babies, just as long as you're not eat crap all day, you're fine." Maybe you all will think my doc is a quack for saying that, but if he's cool with it, then for the most part I am.  I had lost 45lbs before I got pregnant so it was no surprise when I started gaining it back quickly when I had to abandon my 1200 calorie a day diet. Everyone is different. I suggest taking measurements and if it's just your belly growing mostly, then that helped me realize it's not just fat going to my butt. lol

  • I have gained 16 pounds overall, but 12 were in one month and my OB was concerned about that. He asked me to watch my sugar and carb intake, so I did. After that one spurt I've only gained 2 pounds, so maybe that's just my pattern. There could be reasons for concern if the doctor thinks your diet or rate of gaining is off, but the amount itself doesn't sound like much.
