Hi, everyone. I failed the 1-hour and am taking the 3-hour test on Thursday. I want to pass this test!!! I've been looking online for recommendations for how to pass, and some people say that in the days before, you should carb-load, while others say to go low-carb. ARGHGHGH! I want real people who've really failed the 1-hour and passed the 3-hour to tell me: which did you do?
Re: carbo-load or low-carb before 3-hour glucose test?!
Look, I understand this sentiment, but I'm NOT trying to "cheat the system." I've been told since failing the 1-hour that it could be because I had already exercised before I took that test (exercise temporarily reduces your ability to make insulin). I'm just looking for real people who really failed the 1-hour and passed the 3-hour.
Yes, you're right; I want to follow the recommended diet if I do in fact have GD! Ever since I failed the 1-hour, I've been avoiding all carbs, so I'm down to about 50g carbs per day. I'm very freaked out about what this could do to my baby! I just want to make sure that this is not going to give inaccurate results, since I keep reading online about doctors * recommending* a carb load in the 3-4 days beforehand . . . .
I can understand that. It scares me some too. I would just do what your doctor recommends and I would like to think they would have told you if they needed you to do something special diet-wise beforehand (course being informed and questioning things is part of being an informed healthcare consumer, so I am not trying to say googling is bad!). Also, maybe ask them about a healthy level of carbs, since I was told 180 was a good number (45-60 per meal and 15 per snack) and 50 seems kinda low. I know the baby needs at least some carbs.
I'm not a nutritionist or a doctor, but seems like you could do yourself more harm than good to be limiting yourself so severely without knowing for sure if you need to. The baby will be fine until you get the results ( That's why they do the test now instead of later). Once you are sure then your doctor will give you healthy guidelines to follow based on your specific needs. If you have questions in the meantime, ask your doctor.
Good luck with your test. I know it's scary, but GD is totally manageable if you have it.
As PPs have said you really shouldn't be trying to drastically change your diet right now for the test. It's extremely normal to fail the first and pass the 3 hour. Just RELAX and take the 3 hour and see what happens.

The good news is, if you do fail then you know you need to be treated and helped. Good for both you and your baby! And if you pass, then that will be a great relief as well. But it's important to get an accurate, honest result so they can help you if needed.
