  • I've had several friends go through this, and I honestly can't imagine what it must be like myself. I'm sorry that he won't get to share in the rest of your pregnancy, and I hope that he stays safe.

I appreciate his service, and I know your LO will as well!

    Hugs!

  • Oh sweetie, I know it's hard. When my DH left last year, I could hardly hold myself together and I wasn't even preggo. I think I ate an entire Boston Cream Pie in 2 days. From experience, it will get easier as time passes and you will be planning the sweetest homecoming ever in no time.

Don't beat yourself up over the book. You could always send a recorder and baby books in a care package.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
  • Omg, hugs to you girl!! This brought tears to my eyes. I know this is tough now, but you will have your family all together before you know it. Talk to us anytime. Someone will always be here.

  • @Knbh When my DH was deployed the deployed location had a huge supply of books he could choose from then they would set him up in front of a camera and record him reading it and email it home to us.  It was a great help for DD who was only a year and a half when he deployed.  It's called the United through Reading program.  https://www.unitedthroughreading.org/military-program/  He wasn't limited on how many books he could send and it was totally free.  You may have DH check to see if the base he is at has something like this.

Also have DH start checking into Skyping for the birth as soon as he gets there.  There will probably be internet connection issues that can be worked out as long as it is started early enough.  You don't want to be trying to Skype with him while in labor and have the feed cut out.

Talk to the local moms group because they will be able to provide your support network.  They will also be able to tell you the best places to go to get things done.  If necessary remember military one souce is a good resource as well.

As others have said, take comfort in the fact your LO won't remember this time.  DD doesn't even remember when DH was gone and he was gone for ~ 7 months when she was between 1.5-2 yrs old.

Last thing, feel free to vent and cry if needed.  I know sometimes it is all that gets me through the day.

    Signed- another military mom :)

I feel asleep really early last night and woke up to find so many great responses. The amount of support from here absolutely blows me away.

I've started talking with some of the wives in the unit, and you ladies were right on point- it was great to have another person who's in the same boat as me to talk to and make plans with.

Speaking of plans, I was thinking of finding a "project" to focus on while he's gone. Normally I'd focus on intense exercise but being pregnant, I can't go as hard as I used to. I was thinking about learning how to cook more foods, but I'm not sold on that idea. Aside from focusing on my son, what things would you ladies try to focus on learning?
  • My thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband. My husband is currently deployed right now, and the first couple weeks were awful. It still isn't easy. If you ever need to talk, I am here :) Big hugs!

I'm praying for his safe return and the strength for you and him to see you thru this trying time. My DH leaves town mon-fri for work It's so hard to only have weekends with him. I can't begin to imagine your loneliness!!!!! Hugs and prayers lil one
  • I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this :-(.  My husband recently got home from deployment and was supposed to be deployed when DD was born (but it was canceled).  I hope that you can find the support you need in your local community.  Does your base have a Breastfeeding support group or a La Leche League?  Our base has a support group and it's been invaluable to me.

Also, depending on how remote your husbands deployment location is, he may have access to record-able books.  My husband sent 3 home while he was gone.  They had them there for free and the soldiers could record them and send them home.  They also had a program for doing a DVD recording of H reading a book.  DD adores her "daddy books".

@Pooka8, congratulations on your husband's recent return- that's always great to hear :)

I know my base has "mommy and me" type classes for newborns,  but I'm not sure about the breastfeeding support groups. I'll look into whether we have them on post or through my civilian hospital. I'm also going to definitely going to be mailing my husband recordable books- I absolutely love that idea.I think the recordable books would be something my son can keep for years to come.
  • This made me cry. You are both so strong! Thinking of you.
