Taking kids to museums

In yesterday's thread about getting out of the house with the kids, I saw multiple people mention that they go to museums.  What kind of museums do you have by you? Are they specifically kid-oriented places, or other things? I don't think we have any near us that would be good to take kids to, but maybe I don't know what to look for.

  • We go to children's museums. We have a membership to one and there are two others nearby that we go to occasionally.

  • Children's museums 100% of the time I've mentioned them.

    Hands-on kids museums like Habitot.org and Baykidsmuseum.org, Chabotspace.org, Calacademy.org, Lawrencehallofscience.org, Exploratorium.edu, Randallmuseum.org, CDM.org

I could seriously go on and on!

If you want a FUN vacation with kids, come to San Francisco/Bay Area - you could go to a different museum everyday for 2 weeks with no repeats! :)

  • We have a children's museum where we live now that is awesome. DD can literally spend the entire afternoon there! Where I used to live there is a children's museum but it's not as good. There is also a huge science museum. DD is a little young for that one, but there are definitely areas she can enjoy.

  • Besides children's museums we took Reese to the Museum of Natural History in December. She loved it and still talks about the dinosaur bones.

  • We have a children's museum about 30 away that we took her to a bunch when she was younger.  But we started taking her to the normal "adult" museum pretty early.  Seriously, even at 2 she liked to look at all the pretty "rocks" and diamonds they have on display. And dinosaur bones.  And the Indian displays. "mama they have no clothes!" :P  And now she absolutely LOVES the museum and I think it's because we started it young. She never found it boring.  They do have a kids room at our normal museum, and she does spend time in there.   But mostly she loves looking at the rocks and diamonds, and still does.

We go to adult museums.  We live right outside of DC so we've been to most of the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall.  I started taking them when they were little (2 ish).  When they were younger our trips were very brief but they would wander through for an hour or so.  They really liked Air and Space and Natural History museums.  Now that they're older they last longer and we can try a bigger variety of museums.  The best part is they're free so I don't feel bad only going for an hour.

We've also been to kids museums but there really aren't any near us.  We've gone when we're out of town in a place that has them.
  • We dont have any children's museums. We go to the science museum, it is hands on and for all ages.
  • I haven't taken DS to any yet.

There is a small Science Tech museum here in town and that's about it. I just keep forgetting about it, and taking DS there.

Other then that nothing close besides the ones down in Syracuse that's over an hour and half away.

  • We've taken DD to any and all museums. There are always things she enjoys seeing, no matter what kind it was.
  • we go to the city/regional museum for some special events & on the free day for county residents (once a month, we go every 3 mo or so.) to be honest i don't even know if there's a kid section but he loves to see the pictures & displays on the old trolley system & boating, stuff like that. the state natural sciences museum is a couple of hours away but he enjoyed that even when he was really young - dinosaur skeletons, a butterfly house, & especially the storytime with real animals to look at & sometimes touch. we very rarely go to the children's museum, i just can't support some shady stuff they've done. it's pretty cool though.
  • Oh and we go I the cowgirl museum and rope cattle and ride mechanical horses while rounding up cattle. Only in Texas.
  • Those all sound great! Unfortunately I don't see much when I search online, but I'll ask some other moms and see if there's anything I'm missing.

    @sing4mysavior I'm in Pennsylvania! :)

  • We go to all museums.   We live 12 miles north of Boston.  We go the Boston Museum of Science.  We have a membership and go twice a month for only an hour or two at a time.  We have a  membership to the Harvard Museums (includes the museum of Natural History, Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Museum of Scientific Instruments, and Semitic Museum).  We also go to the Boston Aquarium.  We live south of Salem MA and have been to the witch museum and
to the ship Friendship.  This summer we plan on going to the Bunker Hill Monument,  The Minuteman Museum, and the Peabody Essex Museum.

    We love museums!

CJ  I know that you live close to Boston.   Check out this summer program.  This is the schedule for 2013, but I think it happens every year.

  • Most of the museums in Chicago and DC.  Plus the children's museums.  DS asks daily to go to the Chicago Field museum.  He loves the Mummy exhibit.

  • If any of you are in LA, sign your kids up for the Nexgen program. They get free admission (+1 parent) to LACMA and do special events for families pretty frequently. Great way to introduce art to little ones

Oh, that is great!!  Thanks so much

BTW: Did you see Higgins Armory Exhibit will be ready at Worcester Art Museum on March 29th?
I saw that.  I cannot wait to take the kids.  My son missed out on a field trip there last year.
