I think I was drug tested once as a teen to get a job at a department store. And I've has a million jobs since. I don't think people know what they're fucking talking about when they say "well I have to so so do you" because very few jobs will randomly test you for drugs. It just sounds like you're making a stronger point than you actually are.

I did not have my hair cut. Mine was short enough to be acceptable apparently. And although I do operate heavy machinery (if aircraft count), I could grow my hair long if I so desire.
Drugs are bad for pilots though. I totally get why they drug test me... except that I don't do drugs anyways so its still kindof a waste.

My DH had to pass two drug test when he first started and the company does random drug testing. He has never been selected for it but many of the guys that he works with have. He is an aircraft mechanic. (Not commercial jets, private and corporate jets)

I would leave my child in the car while I pay for gas...

I do live in a very very small community, none of our gas stations nearby (and very few in the country) have the option of paying at the pump, and the pumps are like directly in front of the door! Even if I was in a bigger town, I would probably still leave the child in the car. If I could not see the car from the cashier, I would not, but that is VERY rare here.

That said, I do not understand people leaving children in RUNNING cars. I would always turn off the car, and lock the doors. If it is cold enough you feel you have to leave the car running with your child in it even for 30 seconds, you should take your child with you.

I think ambassadors should have been to the country they are being sent to before, or at least, know a good deal (like history, current government etc.) about the country they are going to.

Never been drug tested for a job in my life. I'm a teacher and no drug testing for that either.

I have been drug tested three times for three positions. The first time was as a teaching assistant at a Montessori school when I was 19. I was also tested prior to my last two positions. This was a condition of my employment.

As far as drug testing prior to collecting welfare, I can see the law being set up so that they can be required to get into treatment so that they can collect benefits, and then tax payers will end up paying for their treatment.

If they had drug tested us at my last job, it would not have taken longer than three years for them to get rid of the teacher who drank during the school day.

I'll also join the club of government employees who have never been drug tested. The only job where I had to pass a drug test as a condition of employment was when I was in a direct care position at a children's residential center.

@jellysparkles - I've had a couple jobs where they have a policy of drug testing after an accident or serious incident. I kindof get it, but I also have mixed feelings about it. If someone smoked pot last week and was involved in a fender bender today, the two things aren't related and I don't think that person should risk losing their employment for that.

I thought drug tests just tested for drugs and not alcohol?

The only time I've ever been tested was when I had been going to a pain clinic and switched clinics to the one at my University. I had to be drug tested to prove I was ON the drugs that I had been prescribed.

I have been on food stamps and I wouldn't have cared if they drug tested me. I also don't do drugs though, so there's that. But I feel like if you're getting free money/help from the government then you kind of have to do whatever they want. It just doesn't seem like an infringement on rights to me when you're taking something for nothing. If they wanted me tested I would have.

The big problem is what they do with this information. Do they just remove your food stamps, thus possible starving innocent children, or do they offer help? I'm guessing they wouldn't offer help because that would be very unlike the American government. Does this information follow you in your attempt to get jobs? Can an employer find out that at one time you failed a drug test for food stamps, even though you may be clean at the time of getting a job? Also, the cost of drug testing for food stamps is astronomically high.

As a taxpayer, I'd be very happy if they used my taxes to pay for treatment for addiction for those who needed it. And more food stamps! And job training! And all those socialist things that make Fox News foam at the mouth!

I've been drug tested for my desk job. My company also randomly tests, although due to state law I would have to opt in to the random testing (unless you work in a hazardous position, or operate a vehicle). Dh's most recent position required a hair sample for testing. Also works a desk job.

I wonder if it would work the way it works for some other state benefits. In my state, you can get kicked off of TANF for not complying, but only the parent does. The parent still receives benefits for the child. Maybe parents would still receive food stamps for the child?

I understand this idea. However, I think its flawed in the fact that it offers no help and no promise of "this will haunt you for the rest of your life!" There's a lot of this "yea, lets drug test everyone!!" but, no real idea of doing anything about the positive tests except punishment. And purely using punishment as a deterrent for drug use does not work as we've seen with the War on Drugs.

@BabyBsMommy I think the last thing I would want is to trust people to feed their children over themselves. Especially if they are struggling with drugs. Its a big mess, that's for sure, but punishment is not the answer.

I totally understand the idea behind the drug testing for people on assistance. But the states where this has been implemented has actually cost more money than it's saved. There just wasn't ENOUGH people on drugs. I don't know what happens to that information and if benefits are cut, but I don't want to pay for unnecessary tests any more than I want to pay "dead beats" for collecting benefits. Most of what people are told about government assistance is completely inaccurate and it's sad how many children and elderly suffer because of that.

There are systems that seem to work much better than what the US currently has. But, they are all in these terrible "socialist" countries , so, it would be evil for America to try to learn anything from those programs. 8-|

(I still have to laugh when people say Obama is a socialist. But, that's another UO. And a UO in parentheses. Its almost bedtime here.)

I read the Hunger Games and enjoyed it for a fun read. (I'm not big on movies in general. I don't know why. I'm weird.) I also read Twilight, and finished the whole thing, despite wanting to claw my eyes out.

Oh another movie related UO,

Loved the LOTR movies, cant stand the books. I have read all three, and have tried to read again but I cant get past Tom Bombadil.

Now I admit some bias toward the movies, but I genuinely really enjoyed them and have watched several times since (must be the extended versions).

Oh now I know what I'm doing with my day without DH tomorrow!!

My understanding was that drug tests were being considered for those receiving welfare/TANF in some states, not food stamps. The reason is because your TANF payment is basically just cash that could be used anywhere, withdrawn from an ATM, etc whereas food stamps are much harder to misuse/abuse (can't transfer them for cash, etc).

Here in CO there have been discussions to ensure that food stamps cant be used at dispensaries to buy edibles. ~eye roll~

I hate maternity clothes and how thin they are and how we're expected to layer clothes. I am freakin hot and sweating during this polar vortex. Maternity clothing makers: what makes you think that I want to layer clothes when I am so hot that I feel gross and change my underwear throughout the day to avoid a YI caused by moisture????

Heh, not that hard. Go by the food lion in my town and odds are someone will catch you outside and offer to buy your groceries if you pay them back in cash.
