NBR: Help With Cheesesteaks!

For the PA/NJ people here (I know there are a lot of you!), where is the best place to get a cheesesteak in Philadelphia (or at least a really good one)? I'm in the historic district/old city area and I don't have a car. Someone told me not to go to the "tourist trap places like Pat's or Geno's" and that I should go to Johnny's. But last night a guy who is a Philly native said Pat's is the best. Pat's is more convenient but I don't want to be disappointed!

@ghostof5letters was it Pats we agreed is the best? I know you're a pro...

ETA: I think it was Jim's. Not Pats. I went with a girlfriend and we tried Geno's, Pat's, and Jim's. Whiz is gross but we decided when in Rome.... Next time no whiz.

Tony Luke's or Jim's on South Street are also really good! I don't think you'll be disappointed with Pat's either.. Get cheese fries also!

  • I like the multiple locations idea ;-). My flight got cancelled yesterday, DH is gone now, and I really have nothing to do but work remotely and eat until I finally leave on Wednesday!

  • While you're in Philly maybe you can throw some of us NJ moms some cheesesteaks too  :D

People will tell you pats or Geno's. well quite frankly, I don't care for either of them. Plus, I don't like standing in line that long for a cheese steak either lol I recommend Pete's pizza or Larry's steaks.

ETA: you know what, in order to get the best cheese steak, get what YOU want on it. Extra cheese, onions, mushrooms, ketchup, whatever. Just make sure it sounds good to you :)

  • That sounds so frickin delicious! I live in wisconsin so I guess I'm stuck with milkshakes and deep fried cheesecurds. The closest thing to a philly steak is either me attempting it or we get it from the freezer section. Ewww
  • So I forgot I would have to be on a call right at noon and didn't have time to make it to the other places. Today I settled for a place called Sonny's but if I get off the call in time for dinner I am going to try Jim's tonight and Pat's tomorrow :-)

I am not a cheesesteak connoisseur, but this was delicious!

On a related note, is it worth trying it any other way than with cheese whiz and onions?

  • Thanks! I was thinking provolone would be tasty but I didn't want to defile it if that wasn't ok! ;-)

I'm bursting with a craving for a cheesesteak. Like saliva pooling in my mouth craving one.

  • This is my first time here and I really like it!  I'm excited to come back in about a month for work, and hoping for much higher temperatures next time! ;-)

What part of the city are you staying in?

If I'm in town, I'll swing by and do some tourist stuff with you (and drive you to better cheesesteaks).

I'll be in the historic district again, next time for court instead of the navy!  That would be fun! :)

  • Jim's on South St. is my favorite. And now that you mentioned cheesesteak, I want one NOW but am 2 hours away, waaaaa! Hope you enjoy!!!! :)

  • Awww... some brotherly love from @ghostof5letters!!

I hate whiz.  I eat cheesesteaks with garlic and provolone.  My aunt (lives in PHL) sent me this link for the next time I'm there, maybe these would work for breakfast:  https://www.zagat.com/b/philadelphia/8-great-pancake-plates-in-philly#1
  • I'm really short, we'll be polar opposite pregnant women scarfing on cheesesteaks.

Also, I get American cheese, fried onions and hit peppers. The American cheese forces me to hang my head in shame when I order

  • Philly native- I prefer Pat's over Geno's but Jim's (on South Street) are pretty fantastic too.

Ahh! All I want is a deep fried cheese curd, now! I haven't been able to find one outside of WI that tastes as good :/

This may be one of my all time favorite food truck names. There is a good/funny kosher truck in Philly too but I can't remember the name.

I'm in the same boat. The closest thing I get to a cheesteak is the Hot Pocket flavor. :S But cheese curds are good too . :P And Brats, and beer. Wisconsin isn't sooooo bad.

  • Sighhhhh....California has nothing and everything to eat at the same time.... Boooo..I have had decent cheesesteaks here but I'm positive it's nothing like an authentic Philly cheesesteak..at least that's what this post is making me think even more haha... Why do I open these food posts!!!?!?!!

I feel like the ones in Cali are probably missing the highest fat content in the world, which is obviously required for a real one.  ;)
  • I think I'm the only one here that likes geno's better. Like others have said Jim's on South St is closer to you, has a pretty good cheesesteak, and makes for good people watching. And now I want one myself.

  • Definitely planning to hit up Jim's today before I leave, and I'm going to try provolone instead of whiz.  I don't think I'll have a chance to try either Geno's or Pat's but there is always next time ;-)

Also, it's supposed to be a balmy 36 today!  Practically shorts weather at this point, right?! ;-)

  • Yes wisconsin is good for beer and brats and cheesecurds but it's been a rough winter so no grilling brats (the only way to eat them), can't have a beer because of the obvious, so yes there's cheesecurds and they are fresh gooey deliciousness but I am a carnivore! Meat me dammit! Lol.

I wish they didn't copywrite the name and people were able to actually use it. I would definitely flag down this food truck if it was driving around Providence!

I used to work at an A&W (probably the only one in the city) and we had cheese curds... HEAVEN!
The words "cheese curds" make me wanna vomit in my mouth a little....
