BFP or not UPDATE

The ladies in 2WW thought I should make a post for this to see what some regs might think. For some crazy reason I took a HPT this morning and got a very strong positive. The weird thing is, I'm only 5 DPO and 2 days before that, I had just finished AF. So I took another test-different batch-positive again. A couple of hours later, I started cramping and bleeding pretty heavily. I called the on call gyno and she says that it's probably not my period. That I'm having some odd hormonal occurrence and that I'm probably ovulating and that is why I'm getting positive HPT. WTF! I've never heard of ovulation giving you a positive HPT. Feel free to chart stalk. I'm just laying in bed now (as instructed by crazy on call dr.) and making my way through a box of Girl Scout cookies.

Update: Some of you asked me to keep you updated so here it goes. I went for two Beta tests and they came back great. I think my doctor was pretty sure the pregnancy wasn't viable before that because of all the bleeding. He sounded surprised and happy on the phone. I go for a V/U on Tuesday. Hopefully we will see the bean! Thanks again for all of your support!

I'm confused. It's not possible to have AF and two days later be 5 DPO unless your AF lasts 2.5 weeks.

A line is a line. Get another brand and retest just to make sure you don't have a bad batch.

I've never heard of ovulation (I'm assuming the nurse meant the LH surge) giving a false positive on a HPT. Did you test before you period? There have been ladies on this board who thought they had a period and got a +HPT soon afterwards.

It seems unlikely to me that you would be getting a +HPT at 5dpo, so I'm just trying to throw out other options.

@sueann911 - I thought the same thing. I think she meant she finished AF 2 days before ovulation (or at least the CHs she has on FF).

Yeah. There is no way it's from 5 DPO. If it is real, it must be from before my "period".

I'd say those are blazing positive. But I don't understand how it's possible since your period just ended. Even if you did O on CD8 I've never heard of a positive at 5DPO. You've truly stumped me, but fingers crossed this works out for you.

Maybe so. Either way, that's a dark line which I would have no problem considering a BFP. Get a digi to set your mind at ease.

Sorry. I had AF for 5 days. Then 3 days after I finished, FF said I ovulated.

I agree with the PPs that you probably didn't have a period. FX that you have a definite BFP post after seeing the doctor!

I agree that you likely have a SCH and that your 'period' last week was not a period-- that you've been pregnant already for a couple of weeks. Good luck to you.

I agree with everyone but I want to add that I'm pretty sure your doctors a moron. I am not 100% on this, but isn't it HCG that gives you and BFP, and the only way your body produces HCG is with a pregnancy. Not ovulation. Those are not positive because you're ovulating, that does not explain it. I hope your doctor doesn't try to convince you that's what's going on.

She said its possible because only difference between HCG and LH is one protein on the molecule. Or some such shit. I was kind of freaking out while she was talking. Anyway, thank jeebus she's not my real doc. My actual gyno is great.

Wtf? No. You don't go to urgent care to figure out if you are pregnant. She needs a new doctor but this is terrible advice. Good luck, Kat.

I don't think it is terrible advice. If she has a BFP but is bleeding heavily for the second time in a little over a week, there's a chance she needs medical attention. It could be something completely benign, but those BFPs are glaringly positive and her chart has shown heavy bleeding in addition to what she is having now.

I don't think there is much they could do either way. I'm just going to my regular OB/gyn on Monday to get an explanation of what's going on. Thanks for the FX!

If my period was actually a miscarriage, would the lines still be that dark?

When I had my mc, the day before it was confirmed I dipped a Wondfo & although it was still positive the line had gotten much lighter. Within just a few days it was completely negative. I would say no.

I would think so.

That's why I said I'd need to know more about their structures and the antibodies used in the tests. I understand the assay that both tests use to turn positive or not, but I don't know enough specifics to say with 100% certainty that LH *can't* turn an hCG test positive.

They can't. HCG is LH with a hat. The hat is necessary to turn the HPT positive.

HCG can turn an OPK positive because they don't care about the hat. Otherwise those tests would be interchangeable.

Ahhh. So that doctor is a moron.

Wow, what an interesting story! Congrats! You are definitely pregnant with those dark lines. I don't think you miscarried either, since the dark lines are still present. Must have just been some trickery with spotting presenting as a period! Anyway, I hope you know for sure soon and can celebrate properly!

We really don't know what "at this point" is, as she could be 5 weeks, 6 weeks, or even further along. I don't think she should go to the ER if she is not bleeding heavily or experiencing incredible pain, I was just saying if I was in her shoes I would probably have a hard time not wanting answers, ASAP. I think following up with her OB on Monday is a great idea, and I hope she gets some good answers from him/her!
