After reading this last night I did more research. I wanted to be able to present it to my DH as I was just doing reading/research. I figured it would sting less.
I read somewhere that the chemicals in the electronic cigarettes is just as bad...that it gets on clothes and while it's not the same as a cig it's just as harmful to a baby.'
Check out no-smoke.org if you're looking for an article to try to soften the news to someone, I think that's what I'm going to use!
E cigs dangerous?? Oh no my mom uses this n I hadn't thought about it affecting baby
Here's what I read. This is off of that website if you want the full article. Not sure how much research had really been done on it though. Just thought it was interesting.
"New research may have E-Cigarette users think twice about using the devices. A study by researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute shows the vapors from electronic cigarettes leave behind a potentially toxic residue known as third-hand smoke."
It depends on what E-cig they use. There are many brands that are nothing more than liquid nicotine and vegetable glycerin. They are no where near as harmful as actual cigarettes...I wouldn't worry.
None of my family or IL's smoke ciggerttes thankfully but my FIL smokes pot like a chimney and burns inscents constantly. I know he won't do it when we are there with the baby but has anyone seen anything about third hand pot smoke and residual inscent smoke and if there are any dangers? I googled but only found stuff about ciggerettes...
@sking72Just my personal preference really. I am highly allergic to dogs and cats. And there will always be fur and pet dander and "accidents". And animals are just not clean like people, now matter how often they are bathed. It's a UO of mine I suppose. I am strongly against animals living in a home. I wasn't raised that way, and LO won't be raised that way either. I guess it all started when I witnessed my aunt's cat jump onto her counter and piss on the food that we were supposed to eat for dinner that night. Nobody noticed but me, and I shudder to think how often that happened before and still happens now. Just things like that.
In addition to the fact that animals can be unpredictable, and I'm not putting my kid at risk for having their face ripped off by some flea bag.
I know this opinion strikes a nerve with people, so flames are expected. I'm sure everyone with pets in the home that will argue with me has immaculately clean homes with no fur or dander and their animal never pees or craps in the house and wouldn't never bite or hurt anything. But like I said. It's my personal preference. To each his/her own.

Wow sounds like your friends have general hygiene problems. Not pet problems.
Pets can be kept cleanly although they have dander that will affect you if you have allergies no matter what
I hope you do not keep any pets with your views on them. It would not teach your child to respect other living creatures.
I cannot respect someone who hates animals but insists on keeping one chained outdoors. ( not saying you have a pet. I hope you don't because the idea seems lost on you)
I'm still trying to figure out if you actually read what I wrote or instantly grabbed your pitchfork when you read that I am against animals living in a home.
Your first conclusions was that my friends have personal hygiene problems because I am against pets in the home. Or because of the incident that occurred at my aunt's home (aunt= 1 person...also not a friend). Actually none of my friends have pets in their home. Just really weird and actually kind of stupid on your part that this is your conclusion to why I choose to live my life the way I choose.
Your second point is my point exactly. I'm allergic to pet dander. That's not going to change no matter how butt hurt you get about my opinion.
Thirdly, I never once stated that I hate animals. And as I would like to think you were smart enough to figure out the painfully obvious truth that I don't own any animals, after reading your first point I don't think you're bright enough to figure it out. So here it is in black and white: I don't own a pet. Thought that would be a given.
However I would like to point out that an animal is capable of living outdoors without being on a chain. Sounds like the people you know have animal cruelty issues. I don't know anyone that keeps an animal on a chain, but I guess you do.
No I don't understand why my choice to protect my kid offends you. Even though it does, for whatever reason, I don't care. I'm not changing my mind on how I raise my kid. I'm not trying to convince anyone else to kick their pets out. Someone asked for my reasoning so I gave it.
Its one thing to be allergic and, therefore, not like house pets. I mean, I dislike the flowers I'm allergic to and I'm certainly not going to keep any lilacs hanging around. Its another thing to consider all pets vicious fleabags that rip children's faces off.
I wouldn't allow it. I grew up in a home where my parents always smoked and I was constantly sick. Thank God they have quit but no way my baby isn't spending time in any place indoors where people smoke regularly.

While the flea bag comment strikes a bit of a nerve with me, I do respect your decision to be pet free, especially with allergies. I'm not she where I heard/read it, while dog dander is good for kids to help avoid allergies, cat dander isn't. Weird right? And I'm not a huge cat person, and a huge part of that is them being on the counters and their paws being on everything after the litter box. Sorry cat people! (Although I admit my dog jumps on the counter occasionally, ugh!) and I agree that having pets, no matter how wonderful they are, does put a certain risk for bites and injuries. But I love animals and my kid will be around dogs and cows and horses and goats none the less!
Why do my boobs look so good? Then I peed on a stick...
I grew up on a farm and I loved it. Sure I got hurt more and our house was harder to keep clean but I loved my childhood. We live in the city so I won't be able to provide the same experience to my kids but I do and will always have a pet. For me the risks far outweigh the benefits.
I feel the main benefits from a childhood developmental respect are a sense of responsibility, to respect other living creates, to learn how to care for another being, to know what it's like to be loved unconditionally, to learn how to train and interact with others etc.
While there are some (vary rare) cases where it makes sense to keep a dog outside in general I think it's actually pretty cruel to do that. I respect people who know they can't give a pet an optimum life (because they have allergies, don't have the space, time to play, money to support etc) and opt not to get a pet.
Kind of off topic but I just thought I would throw it out there.

Pot is actually worse than normal cigarettes as it contains a stronger version of nicotine. Plus I presume if an adult can get intoxicated and high from inhaling the smoke then a baby could as well so I imagine it would be like drugging a baby!
No idea about incense but I personally hate the smell so wouldn't allow it. I don't see how anything that gives off any kind of smoke can be good for a baby because the particles can get into their lungs.
Yep sorry carcinogens was the word I was looking for. There's more in pot than in normal cigarettes and that's the bit that causes cancer. Some research studies say twice as much. some say 5 times as much. Not very au fait with the terminology as I don't smoke either. X
I don't smoke marijuana or cigarettes, either, and I wouldn't be at all comfortable with someone smoking pot around my child, but I don't think it's accurate that marijuana is more carcinogenic than cigarettes, either.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!

I think its a bit of an unknown, to be honest. But, I also don't believe its as bad as cigarettes.

Obviously I'm not an expert but there are quite a few reliable websites online that seem to suggest it is worse in a number of ways.
Ha! I guess that's the same as one of the ones you posted. It says cannabis is less likely to cause lung cancer (so less carcinogenic). At least that's what I got out of it
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
Yeah although it does say they contain equal amounts of most chemicals and that cannabis is proven to lower your immune system in the same way, and contain just as many tar particles as normal cigarettes (a lung irritant). I certainly wouldn't risk it. I know several people with kids who have no trouble smoking pot but refuse to use Johnsons baby lotion because of "the chemicals" which to me just seems bizarre.
Thanks guys. Like I said my FIL Would never do it with baby in the house and they live a few hours away but when we do see them my concern is the residue on his clothes and all the furniture...
I'm allergic to pets because my mom is. She was horribly allergic, so we were never exposed to them and developed allergies. I have two non-allergenic dogs that my mom can be around and loves, and I told my friend I will be borrowing her fully-allergenic teddy bear of a shepherd to rub my baby all over so that Baby doesn't grow up allergic.
Also, your statement about "viscous flea bags" ripping faces off makes it sound like you have a lot of fear associated with animals. FYI, if this is true, parents can easily transfer fears to kids, particularly when it comes to animals. If you snatch your kid away from every dog out for a walk you encounter, your kid will learn to fear dogs. Dogs can sense fear, and a sensitive dog who would otherwise be fine when faced with a child who knows how to behave around dogs can turn defensive when meeting a child who is afraid and reacts to it fearfully. (As in screaming, crying, running away, etc.) I'm just saying that teaching a child to be afraid, even if it's only by example, doesn't keep them safe and can set them up to be more of a target for an insecure dog.

The thing about e cigs is they still contain nicotine and other chemicals, and they're not well researched or regulated so we don't have a lot of evidence for how safe or not safe they are. Personally I would greatly prefer them to real cigarettes, though!

Lol, this is one of the most rude things I have ever read. I can tell you didn't grow up with an animal.
Good luck to those of you with smoking DHs. My uncle was a smoker - the only thing that got him to stop was when his son was old enough to say "I'm not going to call you dad until you stop." And even then it took a long time. It's a hard one to kick.
