    Nope.

    While I was pregnant with DS, DH spoke to MIL about her smoking in the house.  She cut back a lot, but was still smoking in the house.  When DS was born, he had some breathing issues and we basically told her flat out - either she stopped smoking in the house altogether or we would not be coming up to visit.  She stopped immediately.

    Yes thank you I did read my own sources. I clearly said I wasn't an expert and I specifically said that whilst i was aware the medical journal i posted didn't find a link with cancer, they did find that "they contain equal amounts of most chemicals and that cannabis is proven to lower your immune system in the same way, and contain just as many tar particles as normal cigarettes (a lung irritant)." To me this is just as good a reason not to allow relatives who use it around the baby.

    In my research online I found a number of sites saying that although a number of medical professionals agree that marijuana could cause serious medical issues for people including cancer, there are as yet very few current research studies on the subject because as it is relatively newer than normal tobacco the population of people who are chronic pot users are not sufficiently old enough yet to ascertain accurate results and it is only in twenty years time or so that we will get a better picture of the long term effects. I wouldn't want to risk exposing my baby to it in the meantime.

    Also FTR, I am a teacher. I have seen a LOT of kids aged 11-18 over the years who either smoked pot themselves or who were exposed to it in 2nd and 3rd hand ways from parents and who had clearly been affected in terms of their personalities and behaviour. I had the unfortunate pleasure last year of watching a 15 year old girl have a full on mental breakdown in class which involved stripping naked, climbing on the desk, screaming like she was on fire and eventually having to be sedated and sectioned. Everyone assumed she was off her head on serious drugs. But all they found inside her was marijuana. Somehow they were able to determine with tests that she had been a chronic smoker of pot for years and coupled with evidence from her diary, and her autopsy, when she died after killing herself, the doctors and coroner ruled that the pot had done massive damage to her brain and caused the mental health issues. So current medical research or not, based on my personal experience seeing others using it, I wouldn't expose a baby to it.

    I've heard marijuana can alter brain chemistry. I don't have anything to back that up though. Your story is terrifying.

    Someone came into the office today that uses medical marijuana and the overwhelming smell kept me on the far side of the building ( my pregnancy nose is extra sensitive to pot for some reason)

    I wouldn't expose baby to cigarettes or pot because both seem like they would at the very least irritate little baby lungs.

    I said that chronic use of it was "relatively recent".. As in people have been chronically smoking cigarettes in my country (UK) for hundreds of years. But chronic pot use has probably only become more widespread in the last 30-40 years. Hence there physically aren't as many people yet that they can see the long term effects on.

    Lets just agree to disagree. Anyone who wants to surround their kids with pot smoke, or shower their babies in acid rain, can do so if they feel the potential risks are acceptable.

    Right I'm off to find some asbestos so I can knit some onesies for the baby..,

    And FYI pot has been around a hell of a lot longer than 30-40 years.

    Maybe you need to learn to read people's posts before being so narky to people. At no point did I say pot had only been around 30-40 years.

    Wow you ladies are on fire tonight aren't you?

    I post some comments about how I don't think marijuana smoke is good for adults or babies whilst clearly saying I'm not an expert and I get flamed for it. Yeah coz that makes sense. Sure hope you're going to pass these attitudes on to your kids. Nothing better than teaching children to verbally attack anyone with a different opinion than your own or someone who you don't agree with.

    It's a shame because this forum has always seemed quite friendly but there sure are some people on here who seem to think they are the equivalent of the bitchy clique of cheerleaders at school that made fun of people and actively encouraged others to join in. Bit sad really for grown women.

    Oh I'm not GBCBing anything sweetheart. I'm a teacher. I deal with petty arguments between hormonal kids all day for a living. I'll deal with this in the same way. Call them out on their behaviour. Then put my feet up and smile as I realise I don't have to put up with them on a full time basis and that they are someone else's problem when they're not in school.

    OP asked about cigarettes. Dog dander is not a cigarette nor does it cause cancer. So... Your statement was both completely off topic as well as offensive.
