Names you can't stand

Since we have some second-time moms-to-be on the board and names are getting tossed about occasionally, what are some names you would never use and why? I feel like I have a lot of strong associations based on morons I've known through the years.

ETA: I'm talking about normal, acceptable names, not uneek ones.

Re: Names you can't stand

  • Autumn: I knew the most conceited girl named this growing up and have hated the name ever since. It didn't help that she wasn't even born in autumn! I think if you're named for a month or a season, it should correspond with your birthday.

Bob: I have never met a normal person named Bob. I'm still waiting. Roberts are fine. Bobs, not so much.

This is my main problem. I have had a lot of negative clients over the years from being in customer service then the consulting industry. I hear names and cringe all the damn time.

Normal, non-client name I cringe at - Matt. But, I have dated 3 of them so there's that.

Nash makes me think gnash, as in gnashing of teeth. Too violent for a kid.

  • Bradley.  Is a fine name and FILs name.  H wold love to use it but my aunt had a dog named Bradley for most of the part of my life I can remember.  It's a dogs name to me.  Oh and he was an ahole dog too, so it's an ahole dogs name to me.

  • Jayden - I just don't like the flow, sound, or anything about that name.

I'm not a big fan of names with -leigh endings. There is no logical reason, I just don't.

  • Jackson/Jaxon/Jack
    Sophia
    Olivia
    Emma

I know a lot of kids with these names.  I'd also never do anything with an en name. Aiden/Kayden/Brayden.  Just too popular in these parts.

Names I don't like for irrational reasons:
Stella, Ivy, Daisy & Zoe: all of these are dog names to me.
Any name that was at one time a Disney princess: Ariel, Belle, Aurora.

  • Grayson. Everyone around here thinks it's a unique name so they use it for boys or girls. Then spell it different so it's youneek.

Also Jackson and same as above they spell it different. Both are normal nice names but when you throw in weird spellings I lose it.

  • Oh, and girl names that start with Dar. I find the sound so harsh and just not pretty. Darla, Darlene, Daria, Darcy, Darby.

Similar, but not exactly the same - I had a high school friend name her daughter Dagny. I just cringed when I read it...

  • I have no idea why, but I hate Silas. I think it's the most unactractive name and all the people on the baby names board just love the shit out of it.

I've got one better Jaxsyn. She also has 2 other kids Carsyn and Emmersyn, both girls. Emerson is a name I have loved for about 12-13 years and always said I'd name my daughter that one day. She has almost ruined it for me. Ugh.

I relate this name with two things

    1) The creepy albino in 'The DaVinci Code' that tried to kill everyone
    2) Hillbilly - like Cletus or  Bubba....

  • 2 Things:
    1. Shitty Cookie guy = Bradley. Never Brad.  Only Bradley.
    2. I know a woman named Dar.  That's her whole name.  Dar.  She's one of my least favorite people at work.

Also, an acquaintance of my DHs named their daughter Alyvia last week.  I actually had to pull up FB to find the stupid spelling of it.  And a guy a few years younger than me had a baby boy in December and named him Kiptyn.

The only Neil I've ever loved is Neil Diamond.  The Neil's I know IRL are complete jerkoffs.

Reason = terrible name I had actually never heard of this name until TB and then the show Revenge.

I actually like the name Silas.  I don't have any associations with it being hillbilly until Duck Dynasty.

Any of the -en names. And the made up spellings.  Just stop.  Stop changing a letter to make the name different.

But especially Dwayne.  It just sounds and looks ugly to me.

And any "normal" name made youneek through different spelling.  Like in the other thread--no offense--someone suggested Claira and I was like WTF, it's Clara.  CLARA.  Not Clay-ira which is how I wanted to read it.

  • I clearly like older names, DD is Audrey, but I hate that some people are picking names just because they are old and not in the top 1000. I lurk on the BNB a lot and feel like this is a common theme. I can't think of any off the top of my head that they have talked about, but names like Bertha.

I like the BNB board too but roll my eyes so hard at some of the name nerds. Like someone posted about hearing a terrible name on a little kid the other day, Boris, and how that kid was sure to be made fun of. Name nerds jumped in with "how can you say this beautiful name will be made fun of"... but yet they say "how can you do that to a poor child" anytime a mishmash name is posted.

I agree, their views are a little different than the rest of the world. They love Boris, but don't dare name your kid Hudson, that's terrible.

  • One name I would never use is Cameron. I had a student with that name and it's completely ruined for me now. It sucks too because I did used to really like the name and that was the first name DH threw out for DS.

I've been working in education, specifically higher ed for close to 10 years now and the name Jordan has been ruined for me because of a complete jerk of a student I had last year.  I've had more names to mock than anything, but this kid really got under my skin more than anyone else I've ever dealt with.

:) I really like the sound of Clair-A. It is a bit uneek but it stuck with me when I heard it.

I'm with HMP, we actually thought at one point to name our kid Cash if she was a he. Then a friend couple named their kid Cash so it was out. And I adore that boy but at events etc, it just doesn't roll off the tongue like I thought in theory.
