Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 2/24

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We are doing ok. I swear sometimes I look for problems where there aren't any. DS and I both had a bit of food with soy oil in it this weekend. He was pretty much constipated all weekend. He probably just wasn't drinking enough water. He also had dark circles under his eyes. I just feel like something is bothering him, but can't pinpoint what. It's probably just my anxiety. :/

    2. Let's talk more about food! What are you craving that you can't have? Have you found a good substitute (store bought or home made)? Giving up most store bought baked goods was really hard. I have had pretty good success with these black bean brownies: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/09/06/no-flour-black-bean-brownies/

With Enjoy Life chocolate chips, this recipe is really sweet. I only used 1/3 c maple syrup or agave nectar (didn't add the 2 Tbs stevia/sugar). Definitely let them cool before eating (difficult I know!) or they will taste a little bean-y.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Nope. Hope everyone else is doing well!

  • 1. We are still doing ok for the most part. I may have been premature with my love of Larabars- I had eliminated all tree nuts and peanuts for 2 weeks and had just added back in tree nuts when I started eating the bars. DD had no reaction at first, but it seems like after 3-4 days of one Larabar a day she started to have mucous in her stool again. Not sure if it's related to the tree nuts or something else, but a similar thing happened with baked dairy where she did fine the first few days but had a definite reaction on day 4 with lots of spit up, gas, and one super rosy cheek.

    2. Cheese! Any and all kinds of cheese. Sadly I have not found a good alternative and think I may be better off just waiting until I can eat the real thing again. I tried several of the Daiya products and while they weren't terrible, they definitely weren't cheese. I'm also a huge choc-aholic and have been able to customize most of my recipes with no major problems (I've used several of the mspimama dessert recipes too), planning to try subbing coconut oil for butter in my go-to cookie recipe this week. I love the So Delicious chocolate coconut milk ice cream for a frozen treat.
    3. My question ties in to my answer to #1 above. Has anyone else noticed a delayed reaction to foods after repeat exposure? DD has also had the typical reaction a few hours after exposed to direct dairy/soy, but I'm curious about when she reacts only after 3-4 consecutive days of exposure. Is it possible that she could tolerate small amounts of baked dairy or tree nuts, just not everyday?

  • @amichelle723 I have heard of some kids being able to tolerate small amounts of certain foods, but reacting to a lot, like there's a threshhold you can stay below but can't cross. Re: cheese subs I found avocado to be a good sub when I wanted something like melty cheese. If you get a good ripe one you can mash it up and add some salt and slather it on your sandwich or put it in a taco or whatever. For the salty cheese flavor a lot of vegans use nutritional yeast - I have not tried it but it's supposed to have a cheesy flavor. If your DD ends up being ok with nuts, cashew cheese (again, seek out the vegans! haha) is surprisingly cheesy. It's good as a mac n cheese or nacho cheese sub. HTH!
  • rocknrollfriend  I think it is really impossible not to feel that way.  At my husband's urging I tried to introduce some baked in milk to DD1 when she was 8 months, and after two days I was so sure it was bothering her.  I told him I would wait to try again when she was older.  He pointed out that we were having a heat wave so her irritability was probably from that...and really there is a good chance it was.  I was just too nervous.
  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?  We are both doing well.

    2. Let's talk more about food! What are you craving that you can't have? Have you found a good substitute (store bought or home made)? Oh gosh I want everything.  I am so sick of eating bacon, sausage or oatmeal for breakfast.  I miss bagels smothered in cream cheese.  I miss cereal.  I don't want to try any substitute products though.  I am pretty sure that fake bread with fake cream cheese is probably really gross.  I have just been making a lot of rice and mixing meats and veggies in for lunch/dinner.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?  Not today!

  • @rocknrollfriend I'll have to try cashew cheese! Thanks for the tip. Mac n' cheese is probably my favorite dish and I have been seriously missing it. My mom went vegan for about 2 years, so I've tried nutritional yeast and was not a fan. I have been doing tons of avocado too; I actually don't miss cheese on burritos, tacos, etc when I add guacamole, but sometimes I just want some cheese!

    2. Let's talk more about food! What are you craving that you can't have? Have you found a good substitute (store bought or home made)? Lo mein from PF Chang's. I've made spaghetti, chicken, and veggies sauteed in a little bit of sesame oil with a tiny bit of garlic salt.

  • 1.  LO seems to be doing okay.
    2.  I don't know that I crave one specific thing, but really really miss eating out in general.  It's one of my favorite things, and it's just no fun anymore with not being able to eat most of what is on the menu.  That being said, I could really go for some pizza!
    3.  Anyone have restaurants to recommend that are allergy friendly.  Went to Chipotle 2 weekends in a row and it's so good, but getting sick of it.  I went to Houlihan's over the weekend and the waitress was so clueless, it was frustrating.
  • frugalphillybride  I LOVE Houlihans so much.  We don't have them in MA anymore.  I look for them whenever I travel out of the area.
  • 1. We were just diagnosed (by pedi, not specialist) last Tuesday. I've been milk free since Tuesday afternoon, and soy free since Thursday. I have still been having soybean oil and soy lecithin. I'm doing ok, just trying to work out what I can/can't eat. Lo is doing better, I haven't seen blood in her stools since Saturday. They have a bit more mustardy color, and some mucus.
    2. I love cookies, cakes, anything! I did buy the so delicious almond milk mint ice cream. It's pretty good. I'm looking for a good cookie!
    3. My pediatrician told me to call her after two weeks of my elimination diet and check in. If symptoms were still present we would need a consult. Would 2 weeks be long enough for me to see an improvement? (I thought symptoms may persist for up to 4 weeks, after I remove from my diet?) Would all blood/mucus be gone by then? Would it still be green?
Just want to say thanks for this post! I have read some back weeks, and you all have some great info!
  • Hi, all! I think I missed last week. Sorry!

    1. We are doing well! DS has his 4 month check-up and got another "perfect" from the doctor! Way to go! Haha! However we are having some major sleep issues. The kid hates sleeping in his crib. He needs to feel cuddled at all times.

    2. I want to shove a big, greasy cheese pizza in my face in the worst way. I really miss cheese, yogurt, and ice cream, and I haven't found any substitutes that I really like. I'm a sad panda sometimes.

    3. Nothing really. We gave DS some mashed up avocado the other day, which was fun. I wanted to wait a little big for solids, but he is SO interested in our food that it doesn't make sense to make him wait.

Also the pediatrician said at 6 months I could try a cheese that has less casein in it, and see how he does with that. From what I've seen on the interwebz, that would be something soft like ricotta, which is made from the whey that is left over after the casein is removed to make hard cheeses. Am I understanding that correctly? I don't know. I'm going to roll with it, though, and see what happens. But I've got like a month and a half before that happens. Must. Control. Myself.

With DD1 (she was just MSPI) at two weeks we saw an improvement, but it took a full month for her cards to come back clean.  Did she send you home with guaiac cards?
  • @camedowncrushing. No she didn't. Dd has 2 bms while we were at the dr. First one came back negative second came back positive for blood.

Hi. I'm new to this board. I've been on an elimination diet for four weeks. I'm currently avoiding dairy, soy, nuts, chocolate, caffeine, chicken, eggs, and 'gassy' vegetables.

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

DS started to show improvement with his diaper rash and eczema this past weekend :)

I'm ok but finding it difficult to eat enough to not affect my supply. I'm hoping I can start adding foods back into my diet now or at least soon.

    2. Let's talk more about food! What are you craving that you can't have? Have you found a good substitute (store bought or home made)?

I would really like a milkshake or even a glass of milk. I had an icee today that helped and I have had some coconut "ice cream". I also have been making a modified fruit crisp with flax seed wheat germ and oatmeal in the crust. I used coconut oil instead of butter and sweetened it with brown sugar. Having dessert helps me think about ice cream less.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Has anyone had a LO with a sensitivity to coconuts?

  • I have another question did everyone's LO have green poop? DS was never green. It was yellow very runny and had mucous in it. It's still very runny but it seems like in it has less mucous.
  • 1. How are you doing? Today I'm feeling overwhelmed and with DS's food allergies. I'm very anxious for his Mar. 13 appointment with the Children's Hospital allergist to get here. How is your LO doing? His eczema returned to his face big time in the past two days. I'm suspecting the coconut milk. We're eliminating coconut as of today. I'll ask his allergist about it.

    2. Let's talk more about food! What are you craving that you can't have? Pizza, donuts, chocolate

Have you found a good substitute (store bought or home made)? Since DS tested allergic to 7 foods (dairy, soy, wheat, corn, peanut, egg, and sesame seed), I have been cooking all meals from scratch. Pacific Foods has a chicken broth (and more) that is free of his allergens, which is helpful for making soups. As I wrote last week, I really like Boulder Canyon chips for salty. I'm still working on the sweets.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? No

  • 1. We are both doing well. 2. I also miss going out to eat. Chipotle is pretty much the only place we eat out nowadays. Pizza is probably one of my latest cravings. 3. Now that my LO is older (9 months) and eating more solids, I feel like his poops have been so much better. I haven't seen mucous or specks of blood in months. Is mucous still a common symptom in poop as it becomes more solid? I realize it might be harder to spot specks of blood now that his poops are more solid, but I still inspect his diaper every time he goes to the bathroom.
  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

I'm doing alright, I think. DS is having stomach/GI issues again (not that they ever completely went away, but they had been getting better up until yesterday). I'm not sure if I had a tiny slip-up, or if it just still hasn't been long enough (we're three weeks into cutting out wheat and nuts, on top of the dairy/soy).

    2. Let's talk more about food! What are you craving that you can't have? Have you found a good substitute (store bought or home made)?

Lately I've been craving everything. We've been out and about a lot this week, and it's so incredibly frustrating that I have to pack so much food to survive a day away from home.

There is no substitute for being able to just swing through a drive-through when you're hungry. I mean, I have granola bars in my purse, but it's just not the same, KWIM?

  • For those craving pizza, here are a couple recipes.

    Polenta pizza: https://happyherbivore.com/recipe/polenta-pizza/

    Cauliflower pizza crust: https://detoxinista.com/2014/02/vegan-cauliflower-pizza-crust/

I haven't actually made either of those. What I have done is roasted some of the toppings I usually like on pizza (red onion, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives) and just eaten a big bowl of that. :) Sort of dampens the craving a bit.

You might be seeing some improvement after 2 weeks, but symptoms may still be present. Just keep that in mind when you talk with your pedi. I would want to give the diet at least 3 to 5 weeks before making any other changes.

I have not personally researched anything about low-casein cheese. You might also consider trying goat cheese first, since some babies can tolerate that better than cow cheese.

I hear you on the sleepless baby.. DS was very wakeful and mostly slept attached to mama. Hopefully your DS is just going through the 4-month wakeful phase and will be sleeping better soon!

Re: ice cream, have you tried some of the alternative ice creams, like almond or coconut? I know they're not the same, but some are better than others. There's also this recipe I've been wanting to try: https://greatfoodpins.com/?p=213

  • @Salemkitty13 Welcome! That is a lot of foods to eliminate! I hope you are able to add some back in soon. Have you consulted with a dietician? It might be helpful to get some guidance so you can get enough calories. My DS was also sensitive to coconut. When I had coconut milk or oil he would get a rashy bum. Coconut flakes seemed to be ok. Our allergist said some kids who are sensitive to tree nuts can also be sensitive to coconut, though my DS was never sensitive to nuts. My DS had more yellow poop after I cut out dairy and soy, but it was still a little mucousy and had occassional blood before I cut out eggs/peanuts/wheat/coconut/cabbage.

@pmduggan01 I hope eliminating coconut helps your LO! Have you tried Enjoy Life chocolate to satisfy your chocolate craving?? It is really good. I will still eat it even once I can have soy again. You can order it online if you can't find it in stores.

@AnnP84 Now that DS has more solid poop, sometimes the only indication something is off is that it's a little shinier than normal. I take that to be mucous. I look forward to the day when I don't feel the need to inspect every poop...

  • @lovelainie I know how time consuming and annoying it is to have to pack and lug around a cooler full of food all day. A lot of time I feel like all I do is prepare food, pack food, and eat food! When I am on the go and need to grab something to eat, I try to find a grocery store. Many places have pre-packed foods that are safe, like hummus or guacamole and chips or crackers. Hang in there! It won't be this way forever. :)
  • Hi mamas. I actually just have a question. Did your LO present with all the telltale signs of MSPI or just some of them? My LO is having some awful gas issues, but his dirty diapers are normal (yellow and sometimes seedy, never frothy, no blood). So I'm wondering if I should try cutting out dairy or just try to find a gas trigger.

    TIA!!

Thanks. I was afraid of the coconut sensitivity. I noticed that when I eat cereal with coconut milk he has a tummy ache. I guess rice milk for me then. It is a lot of food to eliminate. I had read that if they were older babies its usually a protein issue so I did this instead of a total elimination diet. (I've already added beef and pork back in) The chocolate tree nuts and peanuts are DHs allergies. Seeing a dietician is a great idea. I think I'll go after I see what I can put back in. It's a very different way to eat for me I got most of my protein from dairy and I eat very little meat. I'm lucky that wheat and corn don't seem to bother him (fingers crossed) :)

LO has always had yellow poop. He had terrible smelly gas that I didn't realize could be allergy related. His symptoms were mostly skin issues.
  • Another question I forgot to ask... As LO is approaching 12 months and I plan to stop breastfeeding at that time (or at least cut out some sessions), what will LO drink? I plan to make a follow up with the GI around 11 months but I'm curious what your experiences have been. Will there be a food trial to see if dairy/soy continues to bother LO? I've been dairy and soy free since he was 1 month old and have not tried to reintroduce either.
  • 1. LO and I are doing fine. We met with her pedi today and she said to keep on cutting dairy and soy but doesn't want me to cut anything else yet even though her poop is still watery (though less watery than before) and has mucous. She also prescribed Zantac and we will reevaluate in a month.

    2. I am lactose intolerant so the dairy is not as hard for me but I miss the hidden dairy I use to eat! Also I really miss being able to whip up a box cake. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Mac and cheese but have never found a good substitute for that cheesy goodness!

    3. I can't find any bread that's safe for me to eat and am really missing it. Has anyone tried making there own? I'm thinking about getting a bread maker. the idea of adding one more homemade item is a little daunting (I'm currently making homemade tortillas for carbs) but I think having the bread machine would make it really easy.
  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

I'm doing okay. We are exactly one week into our dairy free journey and LO seemed to be improving everyday. Yesterday I accidentally had a small (1/2 tsp) of cream cheese in some sushi and I'm a little upset about it. I'm hoping that doesn't set us back. Today LO has been really gassy and crying on and off for about 5 hours. We have given her gas medicine and she is just now starting to pass some of the gas. Every toot is music to my ears right now. Lol. I feel so bad and I feel like that tiny bit of dairy may have caused it?

    2. Let's talk more about food! What are you craving that you can't have? Have you found a good substitute (store bought or home made)?

I am craving cheese just like everyone else. I have found that almond and coconut yogurt are both really delicious thankfully.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Are the dairy free coffee-mate creamers safe? They seem to have some gray area in their ingredients. It says dairy free but then says it has "Sodium Caseinate (a Milk Derivative)." Have your LO's reacted to them?

    @Izzies
I love my bread machine! It's really easy to just throw all the ingredients in and let it do all the work. In recipes that call for milk I've had success with both coconut milk and almond milk.

    @SareInad

I guess that would be "hidden" dairy? I wouldn't consider that dairy-free. I usually drink my coffee black now, but there are coconut milk creamers and soy creamers that are pretty good.

With DD1 at 8 months I tried giving her baked in dairy (directly as i didn't want to taint my supply) and she was fussy so I waited.  At 10 months I tried again, and she was fine.  After a few days I moved on to giving her cheese that had been cooked..so raviolis, pizza etc.  After a few days of that with her being fine I moved on to cold cheese and yogurt.  I waited for a bit to make sure she was good, and then finally gave her ice cream!  We were in the clear.
DD1 didn't like WCM for a long time.  We nursed until 21 months so it wasn't a problem.  I did give her almond milk in addition to my own milk since she didn't like WCM.
  • I've been making my own breads. I don't have a bread machine but I've found a few recipes I like. I'm assuming you can have wheat? I made this recipe last weekend:
It was pretty good and slices nicely for sandwiches. I've also made a few recipes from mspimama.com. The strawberry bread was delicious. The focaccia was a little bland, but I may have not added enough seasoning. I'm looking into getting a bread machine though!

  • @AnnP84 My DS was still nursing a lot at 12 mo. I pumped until like.. 15 mo or so? He did drink WCM but I didn't sub it 100% for my milk on work days. I just sent extra food to DC and asked them to make sure he drank plenty of water. Most docs recommend trying dairy/soy around 12 mo since most babies outgrow MSPI at that age.

@Sarelnad I would say that creamer has hidden dairy in it. Many do, even if they say dairy free. There can be a certain percentage, something like 0.1%, of the milk protein in foods and manufacturers can still call them dairy free. Just keep checking those ingredients! I never subbed any creamer so I don't have any recommendations, sorry. I hope your LO feels better soon. The elimination period is usually difficult with some ups and downs. Just keep at it and you'll get there!

  • For those craving cookies, I found these at my Wegman's.  Looks like Whole Foods may carry them.  Or you can order online.  They are dairy, egg and nut free.  The oatmeal raisin don't have soy.  Those are the ones I tried.  Although not as good as regular they were quite tasty and I would buy them again.  https://www.divvies.com/
