My contractions were all in my thighs and back, not stomach at all. Everyone is different! Are they timeable?

No, don't think they're timetable. Been up most the night though with them. I feel some waves of pain, but most of it is just constant cramping feeling.

Eta: been attempting to time them, seems like they come about every 5 mins and last for 45 secs or so. They're not super painful/intense though...Guess ill wait and see if they keep up.

I'm anxious to know if your cramps turned into anything more. I've been the same way for the past 3 days but every time I start timing them they fade a little. Annoying!

still having them. Called my dr to see what she thought. She said she didn't think I was in active labor, but if they got more intense/painful to go to hospital or call into the office if after 8am and come in to get checked. Since then I've had diarrhea which seems to possibly be a early labor sign too. Guess we will just wait and see.

I've also had diarrhea, making me wonder if it's going to happen in the next few days. Good luck! Keep us posted :D

I've had all this for weeks now. Doctor said it's just my body getting ready for birth. She said I could go into labor within the hour or within the next 3 weeks. Lol thanks doc. They are very annoying but drinking water and sitting or lying down curled up seem to help me. Good luck
  • Dumb FTM question. During middle of the night feedings, or I guess any feedingb really. Do you check LO's diaper before you steer feeding or do you get up, feed and then check/change?

Silly question I know, but I'm just thinking the faster they're fed the happier they'll be and also it could save you a diaper, rather than double changing.
  • Someone talk to me about period like cramps. Google is telling me could be contractions, could be normal. Do contractions HAVE to wrap around to your back? My cramping is in my thighs and abdomen/ute area. Also, been meaning to ask this to all the STMs of ftms who have had their babies. Was your labor similar to your moms at all? I know some people say that your pregnancy and labor may be similar to your moms. Only reason I wonder is because my mom had super quick labor with all of us (hour tops, just in time to make it to the hospital).

My labor pains with DD were like the worst menstrual cramps I've ever felt, but never wrapped around to my back. The last couple of days I have been having mild cramping, tightening, and it's been wrapping around to my back. My moms labor with me was 26 hours and ended in a csection... With my brother she barely made it to the hospital before delivering. My labor with DD was 7 hours from start to finish!

I am so glad we have this thread... FTM...for all the girls that have had their, babies, excluding the multiples is it "normal" to go this early, are these girls due at the beginning of March? I am not due till late, 26th, so I don't totally get it...
Some of the babies that are showing up this week are probably within the "normal" range for those with early March due dates, especially the twin births.  From what my doctor said you don't have a due date so much as a due month, which stretches from roughly week 38 to 42.  This is of course assuming that the due date they calculated for you is correct in the first place.  Counting 40 weeks from LMP is drunk science at best since menstrual cycles vary women to women and even month to month.

ETA: I just noticed that my ticker lies!  He's now early term, not full term!

  • It's hard to say if my labor and my moms were similar. She went into labor with me and I was induced. We both physically labored for 20+ hours but I pushed for 3 and got DS out. Not sure how long my mom pushed for but they eventually said they didn't think I'd fit so she ended up with a c section. I was around a lb smaller then DS was.

  • Okay question for STMs or FTMs who have had their LOs...I'm having a hard time knowing what is normal and what could possibly be labor. Yesterday I had contractions/cramping off and on all day and ended up going into the dr. They checked me and said I'm 75% effaced, 1 cm dilated, baby at -1. yea yea, I know that can last forever.

Last night/today I've had awful cramping (same as yesterday) but also have lower back pain and feel like I've been kicked in the vag multiple times. I'm not contracting that I'm noticing at least. I just don't know what is normal pregnancy pain and when to call...and I don't want to be the one who calls/comes in for every little thing.

Cramping is normal, as LO moves lower you are going to get more crampy/pressure down south etc. You could try drinking water and laying down if it doesn't improve call and find out what they want you to be looking for as to when you should make your way to L & D. Each OB is going to have their "protocol". For example, mine said before 37 weeks they want to know if I am having more than 6 contractions in an hour. After 37 weeks I can wait until they are 5 mins apart, about a min long, for an hour and before heading to straight to L & D. I don't even need to call.

    This.
    Contractions will get more intense.
I'm having a hard time knowing the difference between my bladder infection cramps and contractions so i understand!

I figure when i cant talk/ cry through the contractions its time to go.

Yepp, this. Labor pains were very severe (for me). All I can describe them as is the worst period cramps ever. My OB said if I'm having cramps to lay on my side and drink some water, if they continue and become more intense and measurable then it's probably labor. If not labor, they should go away.

  • I just got home from my weekly dr appt. Dr said she thinks LO is over 9lb already and has me scheduled for a weight US on Tuesday. She said if he's over 9lb, she doesn't want me vaginally deliver and will plan a c section. I guess my DUMB question is, if you had to have a c section due to baby measuring large, how soon after the US was the c section scheduled? Am i looking at days? A week? I didn't think about this until my drive home. Hope this isn't too dumb!

Do you have a small frame/small pelvis? Just because your baby is more than 9 lb, I wouldn't automatically jump to needing a c-section. My siblings and I were all well over 9lbs but all three of us were delivered vaginally...

I'd be questioning the need for the c-section. Or make sure they're looking/measuring your pelvis during the u/s.

Yes, very small framed. I didn't think to look for whether they're measuring my pelvis, thanks! I also have alignment issues/hips are out of place (been in PT trying to get adjusted before he comes) so maybe that's part of it?
  • @sebellows

Also remember that this late in the game u/s measurements can be off by pounds.

    Not a pound.. MULTIPLE pounds.

Many a woman has been told he can't birth a baby that is 10 lbs inside her and then she ends up having a 6lb baby.

I would be questioning this HARD.

Ok, I'm a little nervous now. I'll certainly question her on Tuesday. These are all things I didn't think about :/ she told me about the US and all on the way out so I haven't had much time to take it all in.

Thanks for the link! I feel bad for thinking "oh, no big deal" since I'll be 38 1/2 weeks. Gah!
  • I agree. Fwiw, my SIL can't be taller than 5'4" and really did naturally birth a 10lb-er without too much trauma to her (minimal tearing), and none to baby - so it can be done if you want to try it (she insisted, but did have an epidural as well).

I didn't realize I was having contractions when I went into triage on Saturday night. I was 2cm and 85% effaced and the monitor was picking up contractions that I wasn't feeling.

Once I had pit, I definitely knew they were contractions.

Depends. In active labor I don't remember anything in between. It was contraction or nothing.

With all this bull shit this time yeah, it's all over the place. Sometimes it's like a period cramp, sometimes it's a full contraction then it might be some weird thing in between or just half my belly. It's weird :)
Normally the contractions I have are regular and I have no pain in between. Tonight they are anywhere from 4-8 mins apart and have a definite start and stop but I'm so crampy in between, very low and also in my back. I know I'm probably over thinking but I'm over these damn things that go absolutely no where so I'm always looking for something different. :(

I had this all last week and was shocked by how painful it was. Heat and keep rubbing oil into the skin to keep it loose. I also found baths a great help (but they're my cure for everything these days).
  • @aLsMay24 I've been having these things all day it's been crazy. I'll have them every 5 min for an hour then nothing. I am Ftm so I am worried about going in for nothing becasue last week I went in with crazy contractions and the nurse treated me like crap... But then if I wait too long and they are close then I'm gonna have her in my kitchen!! Good luck with yours :/
I can't believe they treated you like crap!  I have now been in L&D 4 different times with crazy contractions.  The last time everyone was convinced it was time (even though early) and were super nice when they ended up just being more practice contractions.  I am sorry you got a shitty nurse!

  • Coming in with my first dumb question... And I feel like it is pretty dumb.

We have an above ground pool that came with our house. Moms with pools... When did you start taking LO in? I thought it might be nice on hot days for the baby, but then I thought maybe that was stupid. Would it be relaxing to a baby or upsetting? It doesn't go over my head, maybe boob height on me and waist deep on DH.

  • I'm planning on attempting to take baby in a pool at 3 1/2 mo when we are on vacation. If she hates it okay- we'll get out, if not so be it!

    My dumb question:
My lower stomach is so tender today. Mind you i was super sick last night and that may have something to do with it, but does it get tender as baby drops?

  • This is probably a FTM question too, but do you time your cx even if they don't hurt? I have been having a lot today, but they feel like BH and they aren't bothering me so I haven't bothered to time them. I just figured I would time them if they started to become uncomfortable.

I would just to see what you are dealing with.
    But real ones "should" intensify.
I mean if they are like 3 minutes apart but not hurting i would drink some water to see if that will calm them down, then call my doctor.

With DD my cervix was very posterior (cervical exams were super painful) but I was still 2cm dilated at 36 wks. My cervix stayed 2cm and posterior until I went into labor the night before my EDD!

This. I woke up at 1 this morning having BH but they were frequent. They werent painful but were uncomfortable and I couldnt sleep. I ended up timing them for over two hours and they were consistently 2-3 minutes apart, even after drinking two big glasses of water and lying on my left side, so I went into l&d. They werent causing me to dilate, but they did a FFN (came back negative right as they were discharging me), gave me IV fluids and a shot of some medicine that starts with a T to try and stop the contractions. They said it wasnt much to worry about, but they wanted to get them stopped so it wouldnt turn into anything (I'm only 33 weeks, not sure how far you are). My OB came up and told me that I actually had some bacteria in my urine so I might be getting a UTI and I'm on antibiotics for that now too.
I am so sorry! This happened to me as well! The shot was terbutaline? I had that to stop the cx. Did it make you shake like a scared dog too? Haha!
I hope all gets better with you!
