Do you swaddle for naps/daytime sleep?

LO is 11 days old, and has normally just conked out for daytime sleep, but today has been more of a struggle/more fussiness before sleeping for shorter periods. I think she might be startling herself up. She sleeps decently well at night in the sleep sack swaddles, but I've hesitated to use then during the day since I'm hoping to keep her nights and days separate.

What are other mamas doing during the day?

  • I don't swaddle during the day for the reason you mention.  Swaddling means it's night and we have to sleep.

    But I don't think there's a right/wrong answer - whatever works for you!

  • Right now, she seems fine unswaddled during the day but I remember that wore off after a few weeks with my first 2 and if we wanted them to nap longer than 15 min, we had to Swaddle. I say do what ya gotta do!

Im not trying to sleep train her, just hoping to keep her in the pattern that had been working ok for her for the last week. She wasn't a huge swaddle fan in the hospital but does well with it at night, so I'm not sure what to think/ what works for her. Right now I have her wrapped up and shes sleeping, so well see if it helps! Eta: when I hear sleep training, I immediately think of ferber methods or cry it out type situations to get baby to put themselves to sleep. That's definitely not what we're going for here, I know you absolutely don't use those techniques before at least 6 months.

  • Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. Depends on where I'm putting him down(PnP vs swing) and what he's wearing(fleece sleeper? I might not swaddle. Onesie? I probably will.)

Depends what she is wearing, really. Typically, daytime we'll swaddle in just a receiving blanket-at night, we swaddle in it plus fleece swaddle me.

ETA: she doesn't like her arms/hands wrapped, so we do a sort of 1/2 swaddle under her armpits

  • We don't swaddle at all because LO fusses until he gets his hands up by his face. With DS1 I only swaddled at night.
  • Your baby is way to young to understand the difference between days and nights. I struggle not to soap box about this, but since you asked - go ahead and swaddle her up! There are no sleep training habits you can teach in the first ~6 months nor is there a point in trying, any patterns established wil just be thrown out with the next growth spurt. Let LO sleep when she is tired, and use whatever means make her feel good.
I don't know that this is necessarily true.  Babies do learn that night is for sleeping well within the first 6 months of life.  There's nothing harmful in keeping night time quiet, dark, swaddled, etc. and keeping days light, bright, and loud.  It can help babies who have their days and nights totally backward in the early weeks.

No one is really talking about "sleep training" beyond establishing bedtime routines and sleep habits, which can be done at any age.

We use the summer brand velcro swaddles. LOVE them! Only use them at night.
How tight do these get, and are they adjustable? We have sleep sacks that have velcro for swaddle, but they'd pretty small and they're not particularly tight. He likes a nice tight swaddle as long a his arms can be up, so I was hoping to find something that we could make tighter.
We use these too, but do them up under his arms. Partly because he likes his arms free and partly because the nurse told us not to swaddle at all (don't know why) and warned us to keep the fabric away from his face. He seems to like them, and they don't come off the way blankets would.

  • Speaking of the summer infant, This is the summer pod swaddle which is supposed to be for smaller babies than the summer infant but is this really going to work when he can move his arms around inside it? We just got it.

We've always had a similar "routine" during nap & bed time for our now 3 YO so she understood when it was time for sleep. I would do it. Plus if your baby has the startle reflex she'll keep waking herself up. The swaddle will not allow that. A sleeping baby is a good thing! :)
  • @clb2196 I use the Woombie and the Summer SwaddlePod. Love them bc they do provide a tight swaddle. Woombie can be pretty expensive but worth it. I got mine cheap on eBay used. Try that!
