@dani+California - we do that here. The insurance pays for all the supplies, and for sanitary reasons they can not reuse ANYTHING from one family to the next. So we take home the remaining diapers, wipes, creams, etc.
Nice! So maybe I will then! Haha. Uhhh side note-wtf are mesh panties. Sounds naughty...?
Super stretchy disposable huge panties that fit the life rafts you're supposed to bleed on in them.
Routine is your friend when it comes to good sleeping kids. Keep things as mundane as you can when it comes to schedules. My mom used to make fun of me when I'd insist that bedtime was bedtime. I ended up with 2 wonderful sleepers who never fought bedtime. They have completely different personalities and have since the day they were born.
I agree -- be a stickler with routines! With my 1st, I was a total nap nazi. I always had her home and in bed for naps, and she's one of the few 5-yr-olds that still takes an afternoon nap.
I have a stupid question for STM or anyone in the know: how much smaller is you belly after popping the bebe out? Same size? Slightly smaller? Way big because it's pissed off and traumatized? I'm just curious, I've seen the videos and they make it look like the uterus shrinks and the stomach is smaller within hours of giving birth.
I think it depends. Two days after giving birth I was asked if I was walking the halls to try to induce labor. I was not at all pleased;). Granted, I was pretty swollen and bloated after laboring all day and then given tons of meds for an emergency c-s.
Mesh panties are SO not naughty. Well, these aren't anyway. They are some kind of magic though. They are tight enough to keep giant pads in place, but loose enough that they don't bother c-section incisions (or at least didn't for me). I wore them for probably far too long, lol!
Me too! As I lay here in the hospital I'm already planning on grabbing a stack to bring home if they release me! Those, the tucks pads and the dermaplast spray are awesome. I sprayed that dermaplast all over for months. Numbing and cold!
God, we're going to be so hot! Flabby belly, bleeding vag, mesh panties, leaky boobs... Maybe that's why they suggest the hair straightener? At least it makes you feel pretty on the outside lol!

Well shit. That's no fun!
Urrrrrggggg honestly the more I read about post-partum recovery, the more I want to curl up into a ball. Why does everyone only ever worry about delivering the baby? 'Oh I'm so scared! What if it hurts! I'm nervous!'
BITCH PLEASE I'd rather deliver a baby than deal with the incessant bleeding, bloating, swelling, soreness, discomfort and tiredness of what happens AFTER birth! Let's talk about wearing a damn slipper between your thighs for 2 weeks while your uterus shrivels up!
NO ONE TOLD ME THESE THINGS WAHHHH is it too late to turn back?

While this is all true, you're also reveling in the glorious comfort of being able to roll over. And lay on any side/front/back that you want. You can both see and reach your feet. And while you're still all kinds of tummy-flubby, by comparison to 9mos preg, you feel super skinny. And, you're so enamored with baby, it hardly matters.
maybe it's just me, but i majorly rolled my eyes at the inclusion of a hair straightener in the "what to pack" list. having pretty hair was the last thing on my mind when i was immediately post-partum.
again, i'm a big time hair slacker, so it very well may be a normal thing for others. definitely not for me, though!!
to add to the list - lotion and lip balm! and your own pillow. i was so glad i had my comfy familiar pillow for sleeping. also, snacks for night nursing sessions. i am a big snacker, so i was munching on things all throughout my labor too. i also preferred having my own water bottle from home.
Ummm yes. I don't want to do my hair on a normal basis, screw that if I'll be doing anything to it after I've been sliced and diced. Second the lotion, lip balm and pillow.
God, we're going to be so hot! Flabby belly, bleeding vag, mesh panties, leaky boobs... Maybe that's why they suggest the hair straightener? At least it makes you feel pretty on the outside lol!
Honestly, I think that's why a lot of women bring stuff like straighteners and make up and fancy hospital gowns. When you feel like you have little control over your body (the belly, the constipation, the bleeding, your boobs/nipples are no longer your own, etc) you can at least make your hair and face look nice.
It's not my style at all, but I understand why some women do it.
Exactly this. I loved taking a shower at the hospital and feeling clean. I did my makeup with a mirror in my bed, but I can't imagine standing there to blow dry/straighten/curl my hair etc. I wouldn't make fun of anyone that did though because I totally understand that with everything nasty going on you want to feel a little nice. I put some makeup on today to make myself feel a little better while I sit in the dumpy hospital room alone!

This!!! I delivered at 29 weeks last time, but honestly, it was SUCH a relief compared to pregnancy. After about 10 hours I could walk, move, bend and all over function way better than before. DS was in the NICU so I was really focused on him, but ibuprofen was more than enough to keep the discomfort manageable.
Because I had to go to the NICU to visit every day, I showered, got dressed and overall was pretty normal despite the PP stuff. DH and I were just laughing recently about how one of the best parts of having a termie this time would be not having to keep my peri bottle in my purse (edit). Yes folks, I did all my peri care in a public bathroom, NOT glamorous but you're just so focused on baby it barely matters.

I feel your pain. I swear to god I had no idea you bled after birth. For real. I knew you bled during labor, but I had no idea it happened for days/weeks later. When I had DD I was shocked. Shocked!

This should all be part of sex ed.
We went on an L&D tour with another expecting couple from our birth class last night. One of the nurses was explaining why they have a "No one under 16 in the birthing suite" rule (to prevent traumatizing children and teenagers), and the husband in the other couple suggested that maybe we should be traumatizing them!
I definitely agree to call the hospital and check what they provide. Ours only provided the FIRST diaper, and any formula, if needed. Absolutely everything else was your responsibility for the duration of your stay. Granted, this was in Canada.
Im in Ontario-the hospital provides blankets, diapers, onesies and formula. I joked to my husband that I was going to bring our diaper bag empty and load up on supplies when no one was looking, haha!
I'm in Ontario too, the hospital I had DS in only provided the first diaper and blankets that we had to give back. The one I'm having dd in provides stuff for a fee. I'm not paying that, so week ll bring our own stuff.
Melody*W*: I'm assuming youre referring to the sex on the yoga ball part. We like to do it where I'm on top, his back is on the yoga ball. Good ab workout for him! Still gets you in the squatting position, so good for you too :]
Why do my boobs look so good? Then I peed on a stick...
haha my SO is only like 5'11" and 150 ish lbs (fucking skinny ass hole). Being on top is one of the only do able positions, and I feel like I'm crushing him at 190+lbs. I can't believe his twiggy legs can keep the ball stable, but whatever works for him! We have long since abandoned the "Pick me up against a wall" position...wonder why? ;]

Does anybody have tips for dealing with the meconium (black) newborn poop? I remember it was so sticky with DS. I felt I was scrubbing his skin raw trying to get it off and those diaper changes took forever and he would get so upset.

FTM- zero experience. I read somewhere (maybe here, who knows, all the reading is blurring together) to put some Vaseline on their butt so it acts like a protective layer and will wipe off easily and not stick. So, experienced mamas, good idea? or holy crap no don't do that?
Stupid question here...but I guess that's what this thread is for!
So my hospital has tubs in each room for laboring. On the packing list they provide, they have suggested a swim suit for dads in case they want to be in there with you. They didn't suggest a swim suit for mom, but I noticed the packing list someone posted from pinterest had swim suit on there. When you are laboring in the tub, what is normal attire? I was assuming I would just be naked. Is that weird? No way do I want to struggle getting on some sort of swim suit....

Re: swimming suit -- granted, I've never labored in a tub, but my friends who have were naked or wore just a sports bra on top. Most hospitals are still going to make you get out intermittently for checks -- there's no way I'd want to peel off wet bottoms and then try to put them back on again.
Dark sports bra, bc everyone will be around and it helps keep them supported or a bathing suit. You can labor naked if you want but I'm rather large chested and I wanted to be covered.

I was naked from the chest down but had a bikini top on to cover the boobs.

@Melody*W* Just now saw your post! Sorry you ugly cried. It wasn't a bad experience for me, but I don't think it was as exciting as I thought it would be. lol I had fun sorting through them, and I realized that soon our sweet little girl would be in them, but it just made me smile. After I took them out though, I was like, "Crap.. Where do I put these??" We don't have a dresser or storage for her yet, so it kind of fizzled out after that. They're still laying neatly in the laundry basket as of right now. :-/

I never had any issues with meconium as long as I changed DS right after he pooped. Maybe its an issue if it waits a little while? I also labored in a black sports bra and right after delivery I was back into that and a pair of yoga pants. For bedtime I just wore regular pjs, they didn't come in to check me except a few times during the day so it wasn't that difficult to wear pants. I was one of those "makeup and hair done in the hospital" women. I even get up and straighten my hair when I'm sick because it makes me feel more human, so it made sense to me to do it in the hospital. I just pulled the chair into the bathroom and sat down to do it all. I straighten my hair every day and always wear at least mascara and a little powder. Looking back at photos, I'm glad I did, my face was still so puffy from the IV fluids and I didn't want to look like a 'patient'. Plus, what else did I have to do while baby was sleeping?

I was naked the whole time I was in the tub (which was most of the time I was in active labour). I did not give one single damn about who saw what. Granted it was just DH, my doula, and the nurses, but I wouldn't have invited anyone in who I wasn't comfortable with seeing me totally naked. I had thought about bringing a sports bra or something, but I didn't want to wear a bra while I was pushing so DS could get skin to skin immediately and try to nurse, so I just skipped it altogether because I didn't want to worry about putting it on and taking it off either. Nobody batted an eye.
That's why I like the yoga ones bc they are so stretchy you can just flop out the boobs haha. We are having a birth photographer bc dh will probably miss the birth or deploying right after so I really wanted to get those intimate moments. Whatever makes ya comfortable. I did start stripping everything off at one point and was naked as a jay bird when I kept getting in and out of the shower. Didn't care at that point either.
So much nudity! I'm very modest and kept pretty much everything put away- including a sheet on my legs most of the time. Never did the tub, but might this time- packing a loose tankini top for that. Might even wear it if I use the shower.
Thanks for the replies about the swimsuit question! I feel like I probably won't care in the moment about my nudity. My boobs are small (even still ) so I don't need support really and I don't think I'll care too much about people seeing them...I'm more self conscious about my lower half but that needs to be accessible so I can't worry about covering that too much!

Ok here's another one. I think I've had a few BH. Today I noticed that same tightness I had before only this time it was after lo had moved around a lot. Did I really have BH before or was my stomach just right because of how she moved? Before when I thought I had BH it literally took my breath away but not for more than a few seconds and it wasn't painful, just tight. Today has been more painful and just as tight.

baby moving around can cause tightness and it can also trigger BH.

I figured. I guess maybe she is just big enough now to be running out of room. The nurse at my OBGYN said to keep track of them and I just don't want to look like an idiot going in there talking about the wrong thing!
I have a question, I wouldn't necessarily say it is stupid, but here I go:
Did any of you drink Raspberry leaf tea during the last few weeks of pregnancy for stretching your uterus?? I am wondering if this is worth it, and when it is safe? to start?

I'm gonna be one of "those" women right now, but... I'm having cramping-type pains, but only on my left side between my hip and ribs, sort of like a stitch you get from running. I'm under the impression that labor pains are all over, not just in one localized spot. Should I be worried about this? No bleeding or anything, just the weird side-stitch pain. I haven't done anything to over-exert myself today. =/
