When will you go on leave?

As a FTM, I am reading a lot about when women tend to start their maternity leave and I see most wait until practically they're due. When will you start yours?

Re: When will you go on leave?

  • My last day will be May 23. My company's policy is that may leave must start 2 weeks prior to your due date. Since I'll have a scheduled c-section at 39 weeks, I'll go out at 37 weeks.

Really naive question but... Do FTM tend to deliver earlier or later? I have read conflicting things. Or is it totally random and depends on the mom??

  • My maternity leave is unpaid, so I really can't afford to go sooner. Going to try my best to keep working until I go into labor.

  • My C-section is planned for 39 weeks which is a monday. With my work schedule I typically have to work on Saturday evenings, so Im hoping I can work that saturday before my surgery.

  • I'll have a RCS (not scheduling for 6 more weeks), but the plan is to work right up until the day before.

  • I'm already on leave since my work place won't accomidate my work restrictions
  • I'm a special snowflake. My OB told me to plan on 26-28 weeks because that's when she usually pulls girls with twins due to potential preterm labor issues. But I'm doing great so far, so maybe longer?

  • I'm having a RCS at 39 weeks, unless there's any issues with my GD. it'll likely be on a Tuesday or Thursday so I'll work until the Friday before to have some time that week to relax and finish getting ready.

  • My mat leave is unpaid FMLA, but I'd like to take two weeks paid vacation time before my EDD.

  • My leave is 100% unpaid... I'm not going to get my paycheck at the end of May (I'm due May 30th) regardless of if I leave on the 16th or the 30th - so I'm making the 16th my last day.  It will give me some time to spend with DS and relax a little bit before #2 comes along.

Another huge factor in this decision was also the fact that there is no A/C in our school and I'm on the 2nd floor.  May and June are usually pretty torturous and I don't want to do that 9 months pregnant.

  • I'm really hoping to make it to the end of the school year. Although, with all these snow days, I might not make it. I was due 1 week after school ends, but that time is shrinking.

  • I don't really have maternity leave, but I'm due two days after the last day of school. I'm planning on teaching right up to the very end, unless of course I go into labor a little early!

  • According to HR, I'm eligible to go out 2 weeks before my EDD, which would be June 10th.  My doc can always write me out earlier, but I would prefer to wait as long as possible so that I can use the leave time more after baby is born.  It's 24 weeks from your first day, so I'd rather more of that be with baby than without :-)  Also, my "cost of living" increase goes into effect on June 9th, and if I'm still working at that point that's what my leave pay will be based on.  If I go out earlier, I'll still get an increase, but it won't go into effect until I return to work.  It won't be much, but hey it's something so I'm going to try to hold out for that!

  • I plan to work up until I go into labor unless the doc takes me off sooner for some reason or if I end up needing a c-section, I stop a day or two prior to it.

Just curious, how does that work?  Aren't you only eligible to have a certain number of weeks based on FMLA and then whatever your state gives you?  Will being out so early pre-baby affect the amount time you have after baby is born?

  • @snuff9861- that's my bday owww owww! Slightly jealous you will be done with work at that point... I will be teaching my kids until the baby's freaking crowning since it's finals week. (Due June 10)
  • School is supposed to be over for the year on May 23rd. I'm due June 4th so I'm hoping I can finish out the year before needing to go on leave.

@futuremrsw9 fmla covers me for 12 weeks which ended on the 9th of feb so my position is open to be filled. However since I'm on disability they cant let me go. Basically after the baby is born I'll go back into work and if they have an open position I'll fill it or be prn. I'm a CNA and my dr said no lifting over 20 lbs which doesn't work so well in a nursing home. But since they won't accomadate me I'll get paid short term disability until 6-8 weeks post partum depending in if I have a c section or vaginal birth. In a way I got screwed but I'm looking at the bright side. If I go back prn I'll be able to pick up shifts around dh's work schedule and not have to pay for daycare. But then my paychecks don't have a guaranteed amount of hours.

Eta a lot of women at my work place get around this by not telling them they have lifting restrictions but I had back problems at about 10 weeks that lasted until 16-17 weeks. Since I filed short term disability my dr had to clear me and she would only clear me with lifting restrictions to prevent any more pain or like a relapse with my sacrioiliac joint dysfunction. So I couldn't just tell them I was good to go.
  • I'm a SAHM mom now, but with my daughter I went on leave at 36 weeks. It was a partially paid leave, so that played a huge part in my decision, but I also really enjoyed those last few weeks to myself.

Same here. Since I do work hourly, I may cut back a little on my hours as we go along, but I don't work all that many hours to begin with.

  • I could take unpaid maternity leave any time after the baby comes, but since I am due 6/16 and school lets out 6/13 I am hoping to go that long and not to use much (if any) of my saved sick and personal days.

This. I plan on keeping my Hospital bag in the car and have spoken with a good friend of mine at work about getting me to the hospital if I am unable to drive.

  • I am due June 21, and the plan is to work until June 20. With that schedule, I will return after 10 weeks. This gives me a two week cushion at the beginning in case I go early or can't make it until my due date.
  • I plan on working right until my induction date.  I'll be paid my ETO and ESL while on leave, but it's not much at all.

  • I work at a desk job, so I'm planning to work right up until I go into labor.  Depending on how I feel, I may cut my hours a little in the last few weeks before EDD, but luckily my boss is flexible.  As far as having a temp trained though, we are planning for her to be trained and 'on call' by the end of May JIC.
  • I voted that I plan to work til the end because that's what my plan originally was.  But that's when I was due 8 days before the end of the school year.  Now with all of the snow days, I'm due the day after school lets out.  And while I was a week late with my daughter and felt great, I just don't see that happening again.  So I'm going to be crunching the numbers, finding out exactly what we can and cannot afford and might go out a couple weeks before.  There's still a very good chance I'll work until I go into labor, though.

  • I have not had the official sit down with HR/My Manager about this yet but I'm hoping I can work from home the week before my due date, as it's not uncommon for people in my company to work from home and to (hopefully, this way) save my leave time/vacation time until after the birth.

I really just don't want to go to labor on the subway. My husband saw that happen to a woman about a month ago.

I know it was a huge stress and PITA, but I'm glad that it sounds like your leave situation got a bit sorted!

  • Unless I'm miserable I plan on working up to delivery. My maternity leave doesn't kick in until baby arrives so no point in taking vacation time if I don't need too.
  • I picked SS because I'm ending work at 39 weeks. I didn't want to go up until my due date and as a FTM, I've heard it's common to go past EDD. It was a balance of not wanting to just be sitting at home waiting to go in to labor and working full term and uncomfortable.

  • I don't really want any extra time off. I like working, I get easily bored at home. What would I do? I can't travel before she gets here.

  • I plan on working until I have the baby. Leave is paid based on my accrued sick & vacation time, but I would rather have the time when the baby is here.

Although I do have a growing fear of something ridiculously dramatic happening, like my water breaking all over my coworker's shoes or my boss having to deliver my baby while we are stuck on the elevator.

  • SS as I have requested my last day be May 30 and I'm due June 7, so 8 days prior. If I'm uncomfortable, I can leave a bit early as my replacement starts the first week of May. I also work with my OB, so if she thinks I should go off early, then home I go. FTM though, so I'll see how goes.
