Sleeping thru the night

I know we have had multiple discussion on this, but my pedi told me LO should be sleeping thru the night and that did not seem right to me. The pedi told me that I should let DS CIO when he wakes up in the middle of the night. I am going to ignore his advise for now, but I wondered what the rest of the O13 babies were doing.

Re: Sleeping thru the night

  • Every now and then we have to get up once, but most nights we STTN. She's always been an awesome sleeper though (please don't hate me)!

  • My dd is 4 1/2 months old and wakes up because she's hungry. She eats 4-7 ounces in the motn. She has slept an 8 hour stretch twice ever.

  • For the most part, LO sleeps through the night although he doesn't go to sleep as early as a lot of the LO's I've heard about on here.  He usually sleeps from 10 ish to 6 ish.

He had a bit of sleep regression this past week and woke up at 2 a.m. for a week straight hungry.  I upped the ounces before bed and that corrected that for the most part.

Some nights he does wake up.  Most he does not. I just go with it. I appreciate the nights of full sleep I get and deal with the nights I don't.

  • We wake up 3-4 times and although it's tough I would NOT let him CIO because he's waking up because he's hungry and usually has a full pee diaper. My guy was also three weeks early, so I'm not ok with him being hungry and trying to sleep through it. On a couple of occasions he wanted to eat a lot before bed and he slept 4-5hrs but it's not normal for us, yet!
  • I chose SS. Dd slept through the night for a few weeks at like 9-10 weeks but she has stopped. She usually sleeps 5-6 hrs tho before waking up. Eats and goes bank down for another 5 or 6. Not too bad.
  • DD sleeps 8-10 hours. Wakes up periodically but we watch her on the monitor. She's usually just talking for a few minutes and then nods back off. If she's hysterical, I go get her.

  • He sleeps through the night almost every night but he does throw a curve ball every now and then. He's always been a really good sleeper. And I would never make him CIO this young.

  • LO has never STTN. Usually does a 4-5 hour stretch then up every 2-3 hours the rest of the night. I try to soothe with paci/rocking/etc but usually end up feeding at every wake up. Feel like he has been in a growth spurt since birth.

  • Thursday night she slept from about 10pm-6:30am and was up for the day.

Friday night she slept from about 9pm-4:45am, then back to sleep until 8 am ish.

Last night it was around 10pm-2am, then back to sleep after eating until 6 nursed then slept until 7:30 am

So basically it's just whatever every night.

  • She gets up at least twice to eat the last few weeks. She goes down around 9 and wakes up around 1 and 4. I can't complain too much though because she is very good about eating for like 20mins and then passing back out right away. Rarely do I actually see her eyeballs open.

  • Mine. Used to sttn but around mid-December that all changed. I blamed the 4 month wakeful, but here we are five months and he is still up at least 2 times a night. Sometimes every hour in a bad night. He only eats once tops, though, so I know he's not doing it because he's hungry. I'm about ready to lose my mind. *sigh :((
  • I bed share with both my kids. If it weren't for my toddler, he would probably sleep through. My toddler is horrible for sleeping at night but she takes great naps. My baby is horrible at naps, but sleeps pretty well at night (can go 7ish hours if we're careful to not let toddler wake him up).

my baby usually sleeps 8 hours, eats, and goes back down for 5 hours. i totally count that as sttn. fwiw, my dd1 kept up that exact same schedule until she was 16 months old. it's normal and your pedi sucks.

    She sleeps 13 hours!!?!?!

Yeah, I'm confused- in what universe would anyone question whether or not that is STTN??
Can I get a refund?? I think mine is broken..lol. I seriously thought that was a typo. Holy crap, people's babies sleep THAT much?!

@crunchy of course she doesn't nap, your kid hibernates at night! Lol

This is how my LO is as well. She sleeps around 6/7 until 648 (seriously it's weird) in the morning. Naps like 5x 30 min long. She's tired all day though and will not sleep. Id deft take an hour during the day instead of at night

  • LO has been STTN since 2 weeks old. I am very spoiled. Both girls are great sleepers.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • She sleeps about 5-6 hours and then needs to eat (she goes down around 6 so that's usually when I come to bed). Then wakes up about 2-3 hours later. That is part of why I bedshare. This is way better than DD1 so I am fine with it. As long as I get one good stretch, I'm fine.

And to the OP, your pedi and many others, have no clue. All babies are different. There's no magic age they should STTN. Only do something about it when it's a problem for all of you- as in none of you are sleeping or LO is getting less than the total amount of recommended sleep per day. Otherwise, think of it as a parenting issue and in one ear out the other.

  • He will sleep until around 3 am-5 am. He usually wakes up,sometime between there. I consider it STTN because he goes to bed between 5 pm-7 pm depending on when he sleeps.
  • I think all this pressure for LO to STTN is absurd! My LO started STTN on her own around 9 weeks then hit a GS and wanted to nurse more at night. Now her normal schedule is nurse at 9, 12:30 and 4:30 then up for the day around 7. She wakes frequently but she's super hungry, drains both boobs then happily passes back out. I'm so used to it I fall back asleep easily so it's not that bad.

I think the hardest part was feeling pressure from friends and family and thinking something was wrong with my parenting because LO was still waking up. So silly!

  • A normal day is bed at 10 wakes between 2-3, eats and back to sleep till 6-7, eats and sleeps another 1.5-2hrs. Up for the day by 10, eat play naps between 12-1 for 1-2hrs eats plays, naps around 4 for 2-3hrs. Eats plays until 10.

  • DD mostly sleeps from 11 ish to anywhere between 6 and 9am. We have never tried to do anything, she just figured this out on her own. I  feel lucky!

  • DS2 usually wakes once to eat. Sometimes more.

DS1 is 2.5 and just starting to not wake during the night. He's still up once a night looking for snuggles or a drink of water a few nights a week.

Going to quote my response so I don't shoot myself in the foot. Feel like crap tonight and have to work tomorrow. My LO is like yours, last night was crying at 12, picked her up to sooth, rocked for 5 mins and back to her bed.
  • We use to STTN until the 4MW hit around 3.5 months. He's now 4 months and I refuse to acknowledge how much he wakes up in the middle of the night now. Whatever number it is, it's a lot and i'm TIRED! This too shall pass I tell myself :). When he used to wake once, I actually kind of enjoyed it. He was always so cute and happy when he woke in the middle of the night to eat and I l loved the bonding. Now he's angry and it's constant so it's safe to say I don't enjoy it!

    This exactly.
  • She was sleeping 6-8 hours for the first stretch and then maybe 2 more, but over the past three nights she has been up every two hours like clockwork.

This is pretty much exactly what our schedule is now (minus the STTN when younger) that I have started doing a dream feed at 9 before I go to bed. DS goes down for the night around 6:45. If he sleeps too long on a given night I wake up anyway and feel like something is wrong because I am used to feeding him. As many have said, when I feel like I might get frustrated with waking up with him, I just think about how much I will miss these cuddles one day.

  • Thanks everyone!

I totally trust my pedi for medical concerns/ issues, but as someone said I think I will let his parenting advise go in one ear and out the other.  Thanks again to everyone here for your wonderful support.

Also, thanks for pointing out the advise vs. advice issue, oops.  I am a horrible speller, if spell check does not catch it I never will.

  • Mine sleeps from 10 ish to 6 ish then goes back down until about 8. Although that is a later bedtime, Im considering myself very lucky! He went through a but of a regression for a few nights straight but luckily that didnt last long. However his daytime nights have majorly decreased. It's usually a few 20 min naps here and there.

After several nights of patiently waiting while I cried, DS has finally gotten me to understand that he prefers not to sleep. Therefore whenever he sleeps at all, I consider it a win
There must be a special place for us in heaven for being this patient :) Maybe it's because we both named our boys Daniel. I just keep telling myself it can't last forever! However, the minute I see you post that he STTN I'm going to cry.
Edit: Forgot to answer. DS is still up every 3-4 hours on a good night.

A goes to bed anywhere between 10:30-12 and sleeps until about 9:30am. Eats "breakfast" and takes a nap for about and hr and a half. All told we usually get a 9hr stretch at night. She started doing this on her own at 9 weeks.

Funny enough this was our same schedule when I was pregnant. Because I work swing (2-10:30pm) my days are shifted and our sleep schedule got shifted. I think she just reverted to it once she was out and got the hang of being an outside baby.

Thant being said she still mixes it ip. Today she woke two hours early ate 8oz (2more than usual) and is now talking to the ceiling.
