I just read Divergent and am now onto Insurgent by Veronica Roth-- total "Young Adult" books but I love reading them before the movies come out (next month in case anyone is interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sutgWjz10sM)
I read the entire series the other week because I wanted to read the books before I watched the movie. Don't read the last one in the series for a bit though. Not going to spoil, but the ending was not what I expected and it will change how I see the movie(s) and I almost regret reading them.

I also just finished reading all of the Hunger Games. I wasnt into the movies but then I got a stomach bug and it was free on amazon prime so I watched the first one and ended up going to see the second one with some friends and had to know what happened next. I just wish the third movie wasnt being split into two movies.

I am reading the Book Thief. It is hard to get into. I am over halfway, but will read other books if I see them. I just bought the newest Target Book club book, but I havent started reading it yet. i love reading.

  • I'm reading Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy. Quick read and very easy to relate too!!!

Then I've got A Shade of Vampire on my kindle. It's the first in the series and was on sale for $.99, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

For those that have read or are reading Gone Girl, I loved it but I hate the way it ended!!! I was a little disappointed since it was such a great read!!!
  • @yayskimp I hated JABC, too! I love all things JA. Have you read the new book "Longbourn"? It is P&P from the servants POV. I liked it!

  • I am currently on a psychological nonfiction kick (happens to me during the school year for whatever reason) and I am reading The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker and listening during my commute to The Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal.

The Gift of Fear is a little unsettling, but parts of it are absolutely a must read--especially for women who tend to dismiss gut feelings in order to not to be "rude."

    SandraPB1220 Gone Girl was crazy!!

chickpea912 I read Divergent but got onto something else before the second one came out. Then, I heard terrible things about how boring the second one was, so I decided not to read it. Did you have a different experience with the second one? I am trying to decide if I should give it a chance :)

  • Just finished "The Visionist" by Rachel Urquhart. It's a novel about a young woman in the 1840s who ends up joining a Shaker colony in Massachusetts. It was a pretty good story and interesting to learn more about the Shakers.

Just added a bunch of books to my library hold list after reading this thread!

  • Divergent (well, halfway through Insurgent) for me as well! Plus a little "Happiest Baby on the Block" whenever I get a chance! ;)
  • I just finished The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. It's about a time-travelling serial killer in Chicago. It was really good.
  • @Dharmatron-that sounds interesting.

I started Divergent and am LOVING it so far!  I was leery that it was just a Hunger Games copy cat so I had avoided it cuz of that.  But it is refreshingly different and awesome!

ETA: I stayed up WAY too late reading last night!

I just finished Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson (both really good if you like historical fiction) and started Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand last night

I have the first two on my kindle but haven't started reading them.  Glad to know you enjoyed them!

Unbroken is such a good book, I highly recommend it.

I just finished The Circle by Dave Eggers.

Neither of the Eric Larson books are fiction.  I read Garden of Beasts a couple of years ago, it's about our US ambassador and his family's experiences in Munich during the early part of WW2.  It was a little dry but I liked it (I'm a history buff).  Not sure about Devil in the White City though, wasn't that about one of the Worlds Fair?

Yep Devil in the White City is about a serial killer in Chicago during the worlds fair. Larson's books are interesting because he publishes and cites to actual correspondence about the events/from the characters but at the same time he fills in gaps with conversations as he believes they could have occurred so not exactly non-fiction but pretty darn close. Highly recommend for history nerds:)

@kibean I did like the second book, but I struggled a little with the third book.  But I will probably go back and reread them all again at some point, which I don't always do with books, so take that as you will :)

@chickpea912 -- I can't wait to see The Fault in our Stars... I will cry my face off! Fab book.
@CAMag I KNOW! I need to reread it before I see it, though.

  • @LilNunz1 - I'm glad I'm not the only one! That book is making me crazy. I'm doing a bit of skimming. I think I've only got 20 pages left.  I haven't heard of Longbourne, but I LOVE the sound of P&P told from the servants' point of view.  It's my favorite Jane Austen.  Sounds like P&P, Downton style.  Thanks for the recommendation, that's definitely next on my list.

  • I just finished The Interestings, which I didn't find that interesting. I kind of wanted to smack the main character.

I loved The Fault in Our Stars and Me Before You, but OMG did I cry. I read them both when I was like 7-8 weeks and was a hormonal mess. They are excellent though.

Also loved Where did you go Bernadette? Great book.

And State of Wonder was also pretty great, though I did the audiobook for that one. Oh! And I just finished Wild as an audiobook, which was great!

I loved Divergent 1 and 2, but I rolled my eyes the whole way through 3. Is Matched any good?

I think I'll read The Goldfinch next since I've already downloaded it. I've found all of Donna Tart's books interesting, though I far prefer The Secret History to The Little Friend.

Sorry - that was alllll over the place.

  • I just finished "Gone Girl"... it was excellent and not at all what I was exepecting...  good twist in that one!

Now I'm reading Divergent, on the advice of a coworker.   so far,  it's really good, and I don't want to put it down.

  • Almost done with "Crossed" the finale in a three book series and "Eating for Pregnancy" which is very informational about how to eat to support your growing baby before, during, and after pregnancy as well as being a cook book. I haven't gotten to the recipes yet but I'm almost there!
  • Game of Thrones. I haven't seen the show but it's a good fantasy book.
as someone who read all the possible books before the show came out- DON'T WATCH THE SHOW. i am apparently a "book is better than the movie" snob when it comes to this series and feel hbo is really making it terrible.

i LOVED the books so much and they are definitely not my book style, but i was hooked. enjoy!

  • I'm in the process of reading "Hollow City: The Second Novel of Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Childres" by Ransom Riggs. The first one was good so I'm guessing this one will be as well.

I also finished Dark Places by Gillian Flynn not too long ago...that lady has 1 messed up mind. She creeps me out.
I loved the first and had no idea there was a second. Thank you!!

  • Our library is doing a historical book challenge. So far, I've read Mistress of the Art of Death, The Widow of the South, and I just started Cold Mountain last night. I loved the first two.
