Sushi. Who ate it while pregnant?

edited February 2014 in July 2013 Moms
I'm curious because I ate all kinds of things that you weren't "supposed" to eat while pregnant. My doctor told me "everything in moderation". So, I ate sushi, soft cheeses, lunch meat, anything really. If I was hungry and it sounded good... I ate it.

Re: Sushi. Who ate it while pregnant?

  • Loved sushi. The only this I didn't do was alcohol and caffeine until 20wi since I had a previous loss
  • Loading the player...
  • I didn't bc I don't like it not bc I wasn't supposed to.

Not until the end. The night before my induction I ate ALL THE SUSHI!

ETA: Should add my theory at that point was there was nothing I could do to screw the poor kid up in the next 24 hours... lol
  • I didn't drink alcohol at all and I didn't drink much caffeine until towards the end of my pregnancy.  I usually only eat raw sushi, I don't much care for the cooked stuff :)
  • No sushi for me. I was pretty much scared to eat anything I "wasn't supposed to." More fear than anything.

  • My doc said no raw meat or alcohol, but said soft cheese, lunch meat, and coffee was ok.
  • @Mommy1stTimer my sister was the same way.
  • For the first 20 weeks, I was pretty careful about everything.
For the second 20 weeks, I was most careful about sugar and carbs because of my GD but as far as things like deli meat, soft cheese and sushi go, I was a little more lax as long as I knew the place I was buying it well.  I am not the biggest sushi fan (I like it as a appetizer but not as a meal) so I didn't have much.
For the last 10 weeks, I'd have a half glass of wine or beer very occasionally (every other week maybe).

  • I ate sushi but I don't like raw stuff. I usually eat shrimp crab scallops

  • I had my fav., which is cooked, but got it w/o tobiko.
  • I ate it, but nothing raw. I did eat lunch meat, coffee at the end when I could stomach it, and the occasional sip or two of beer.

  • I did not because I don't care for Sushi.
I love subs and I followed the no deli meat rule unless heated. It was torture, deli meat is gross heated!

  • I ate it. I trusted the place that it was from. I also ate deli meat towards the end, and had half a beer/glass of wine here and there in 3rd tri.

  • I didn't eat sushi, but I broke plenty of other rules. I had deli meat, soft cheeses and let myself have wine when I was really craving it. I completely agree with the "everything in moderation" rule.

I basically ate everything. But for the foods that I wasn't supposed to, I ate in moderation. I didn't have any alcohol or caffeine, though. But not because I wasn't supposed to. I lost the taste for both during pregnancy.
  • Cooked sushi only. Which is sort of an oxymoron... But yeah.
  • I ate whatever I wanted including sushi, lunch meat, wine, soft cheese, etc.

I did have poop attack disease at about 7 weeks (which I think is why you're supposed to avoid these foods) from some undercooked beef, but nothing happened.

  • Not a fan of sushi here, but I ate all the turkey subs I could get my hands on. Om nom nom turkey lunch meat. ;)
  • @Asbromle yes! All my friends told me to not worry as much, but because LO is my 1st I think I was even more cautious than I needed to be for sure.

  • @Mommy1stTimer that's what my sister said, too...lol.  She said with her next one she won't be as cautious especially since I wasn't and my baby turned out alright ;)  Who knows though, maybe all the sushi, lunch meat, cheese, etc is why he keeps me up all night now, haha.
  • @mamasighs, sorry about your mama.
  • I did! My doctor said the same thing. I are sushi, lunch meat, and even had a glass of wine here and there.
    <Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker>
  • No but only because I don't like sushi to begin with. If I liked it I probably would've eaten some.

It's funny though because raw veggies and some fruits are just as dangerous, if not more so, then some things pregnant women aren't supposed to eat (regarding bacteria). My mom is undergoing chemo and in addition to the dietary restrictions pregnant women follow, she was told absolutely no raw veggies at all and only some raw fruits (ones with thick skins). She's still supposed to scrub those with a brush and soap before eating.
This is what I don't understand about the 'do not eat' list.  I could get just as sick from a salad.  In fact, the one time that I did develop food poisoning was from strawberries that were on a salad.

I ate sushi - all of it.  But only from reputable places.  No gas station sushi.  Ew.  For most of my pregnancy, meat of all kinds made me sick.  Except for raw salmon.  And I craved it.  I figured that my body was telling me something so quite a few times, I stopped on the way home for a large order of salmon sashimi.
  • I ate sushi but mostly cooked things, no sashimi.  I also drank coffee almost every day (1 cup), and ate lunch meat (mostly at home, the $6 a package organic kind!). I was much less "careful" with my second pregnancy than my first.

I barely drank any caffeine with DS1 (I think I literally had maybe three half-caff lattes my entire pregnancy), which is so ironic because from what I can tell so far, my first is the more wound-up of the two, and my second is more laid back!

  • I love it, but never had it!!! My dad brought it to me when I got home from the hospital. But I refused to give up coffee.

I was one of those paranoid pregnant ladies who followed all the "rules." I honestly can't say I won't next time because I am so hoping to go full term and I know I would blame myself that something I did caused me to have the baby early. But both of my sisters in law drank wine and ate stuff on the no-no list and their babies are fine, so I know I am overly cautious. Btw, hi @fitnessteach2010!! Looks like another snow day for you tomorrow!! Edited for punctuation

  • I actually ordered some smoked salmon rolls at the end of my third tri and the dang place refused to serve it to me. "Dangerous!" was the response from the waiter as he pointed to my belly. Ugh.

@Asbromle, this was my response. I was so mad, I wanted to just leave then, but DH talked me down since we were with another couple. :P
