I wore a jersey knit robe I'd gotten from Gap body (but they have similar styles at Target now) and I thought it was great. Good enough to cover up with but I found the rooms to be very warm at the hospital so wearing something too heavy would have been miserable. I wore the robe with nursing tanks the whole time we were there, I never wore the hospital gown after the first night.

Another question..... We discussed baby powder but what is the purpose of baby oil for LO? I would assume to act as a moisturizer but isn't that what lotion is for. Thanks

Baby oil tends to sit on the surface of your skin where as a more natural oil like coconut or almond or even olive really penetrate and moisturize the skin. If you use a good oil when skin is damp you don't need lotion.

For those that had their LO sleep in the rock n play for the first few weeks/months, do you swaddle them and then strap them in? Or do you do like in a car seat and strap them in and then bundle with a blanket?

I have another. How serious is this "don't use a bottle for first 4 weeks of bf" rule? Will they really get nipple confusion? Just think if DH could do 1 or 2 feeds a day/night it might be the secret to staying sane. I love my sleep so I'm a bit worried about the first few weeks. Obviously if constant feeds are what it takes, I'll just suck it up. Thanks

Not all babies have issues switching between breast and bottle. But if you think you can get your husband to feed a bottle or two and sleep forget it. Every feeding you miss you should pump as that early you need to set your supply, and you would become engorged and won't sleep anyways.

Ok, I was told that after baby is born, they stick this tube down its throat and suck the stomach...but people who are more naturalists say this is unnecessary and jarring for the baby, I don't know what it's called to google it, does anyone know what I am talking about? Apparently you can decline to have it happen unless medically necessary...

@DRFleener that is NOT a routine newborn procedure. I don't even know what would prompt them to do that. The closest thing I can think of is if a NB needed to be intubated, but that is the airway, not the stomach.

With DS, it wasn't to suction the stomach but to suction the meconium fluid out of his lungs, since he was having breathing problems. I haven't seen it done routinely unless necessary. The vaginal births I have seen they haven't done that, just used the bulb suction to get the nose and mouth cleared out.

Why are there to many options for friggen cloth diapers? I am more confused than ever! All they need to do is catch friggen poop not solve world peace! Grrrrrr X(

So sorry but its true. I remember it being a very difficult first couple of months. Unless of course you do some formula and DH helps out.

So we finally setup the pack and play. We had gotten those water proof mattress pads to absorb any fluids. But the pack and plays says not to add any mattress or padding. Does that mean the water proof padding or like hardcore padding?
Also the pack and play came with the changer that goes half across the top. But I'm not supposed to leave that on top while half of LO is laying underneath it right?

For BF'ing moms that is the worst advice ever... You still have to pump or express milk if you H takes a feeding. Unless you want your supply to tank and risk painful engorgement or infection.

Ok. But if you really need to sleep, skipping a pump is the only way.
BTW, I pumped and bf my DD for over 2 years. BM is fantastic, but mom's health has to come first. If you feel like you're going to break down without sleep, don't feel guilty about letting DH take over once in a while.

Cause there are so many different types of parents and babies

We have prefolds and pockets. I hate pockets, DH hates prefolds! So we have both

I am leaning towards prefolds and pockets as well. It's more of a brand issue. I read the cd board Internet reviews ect. and was going to try a few brands out but not break the bank. I was thinking kawaii but idk lol

Thanks for the tube thing my sister said they did it with my first nephew without reason and she had to tell them not to,do,it with the 2nd. So who knows. Also, I am going to try and BF and the nurse said the thing about every two,hours either way...lack of sleep coupled with decision making makes a little fearful, but I really want to nurse and pump...so I am good with the sacrifice..just wanted to make sure this was legit and not scare tactics!

Nope, a baby will do whatever he/she pleases. However, I usually ended up changing a newborn with every feeding. They like to "go" as they eat.

Ok- they have the bottle sterilization thing you can buy- isn't running the bottle through the dishwasher the same thing? And along those lines with the breast pump parts it says to sterilize daily- can I just run the parts through the dishwasher daily????? I don't want to spend unnecessary money

$4.99 will get you 100 sterilizations per the description; my BIL says, however, that they are getting more like 30 uses per bag rather than 20 so more than 100 per set. Takes seconds to do, much cheaper and more efficient than running the dishwasher constantly

Depends on how paranoid you want/need to be. All ds's bottles were put through the dishwasher and they survived 9 months with him (that's when we transitioned to a soft nippled sippy)

Same. We never had a problem with pieces being warped from the dishwasher, just make sure you wash on top rack only! I chose to hand wash my breast pump parts at the end of each night but mainly because I didn't always have a full dishwasher to run!

Personal preference. I soaked mine in the sink full of hot water and soap then rinsed clean.

I followed the direction booklet that came with mine - it had specific instructions for sterlizing by boiling some (but not other!) parts of the pump.

All I'm trying to say is that a mom should not be made to feel guilty if she needs to sleep. I would rather see her give the baby a bottle of formula rather than have a nervous breakdown. I'm not asking for a "gold star" I'm just stating my opinion as someone who does support breastfeeding.

it's not a formula issue. its the timing of getting milk out of your boob so it doesn't hurt.

In my experience, once my milk came in and regulated, skipping one pump session occasionally at night was never painful. I just leaked a little or woke up extra full and pumped more in the morning.

It's not really an all or nothing thing... You just do the best you can and sleep as much as possible.

This is a cool thread!

First question: Nursing bras; should I buy them now or wait until my milk comes in? My concern is choosing the wrong size now and that they won't fit when the milk comes in.

Question #2: At night I have menstrual type cramps, usually on one side and some that even wake me up at times and I was wondering if they were BH, RLP or just the uterus stretching.

I never saw an answer to this one so here's my understanding of it. It does go away. It's really always there but it's the hormones that make it darker so as your hormones level back out the line will fade.

Yep...I think I was 8 or 9m pp last time when mine faded completely.

@bennieangel With skin-to-skin it's actually recommended that there be nothing between you and baby, so I'd suggest the bikini top and just get it out of the way at the end.

Just the hospital gown. We did skin to skin right away, anything else I would of worn would of got ruined or be a pain to take off. I wanted to labour in the tub but had no time. For the tub a sports bra or bikini top would work.

Anyone else with a rumbling stomach all of a sudden? Mine hasn't grumbled much at all during pregnancy and then all of a sudden tonight it's super loud and grumbly. It's not upset or anything, I feel fine.

Yes! The past week or so my stomach is so loud it's nuts. I don't even need to be hungry.

Ooh, that made me think of one. We're planning on having little guy sleep in our room the first month or so (in his PNP bassinet thing) so where do we change him in the middle of the night? Just keep a travel changing pad in there and do it on the floor? There's no room/I'm not moving his changing table into our room.

Also, if anyone wants to offer their two cents: I wanted to put him in our room b/c I'm paranoid about SIDS...am I indeed paranoid or is this a legit way to help prevent it?
