I've had the occasional BH since about week 20.  Sometimes they are a little uncomfortable, but as long as they go away when I sit down and drink some water my OB said not to worry.

Now that I think of it, I wonder if FTMs might get them earlier or more often since our utes haven't been this stretched out before?
I thought about this too back in the day but then my friend had crazy BH with her 4th child starting at 20 weeks.... Not that one person means it's fact but it is food for thought

I never had BH with my first. There is no real rule me thinks.
I'm going to say it. @FarmBoysWife you are having a girl.
Aren't girl pregnancies "worse/harder" than boys? Or is this just a wives tale?

Thanks PP's! This is my 2nd baby and I never experienced the BH before, which is why it worried me. I'll mention it to the ob but its only happening max 5x day
  • Okay- another wives tale question that i would love to know if it is true.

Are you more likely to go into labor during the night/early morning hours?

The labor poll had me thinking.

You can't over feed babies.. If you do they just puke on you!

    You're BF'ing @laura8388 right?

Expressing and bottling, until we can get the latch mastered!!!!

I actually just taught myself the art of burping a baby. I don't think I knew how... But he was spitting up all over himself when I lay him down so figured he wasn't burped enough - I'm sure that's something other FTMs don't know how to do!!!!
Every baby is different in the way they like to be burped. With DS we would run our finger nail down his spine gently and he would burp. No amount of tapping/hitting/bumping/etc would help!
Both of my boys had to be patted on their butts to burp. Aww I remember those nights I must have walked for hours patting their butts :)
  • Per request, dumb questions:

Every BF video I see the mom is holding her boob.  Do I seriously have to hold my boob the entire time?  If so, how do I do so without my arm going to sleep?  What is the purpose of boob holding anyway?

We're doing cloth diapers but I want to use disposables until meconium is gone so they don't get all stained black (we're renting the NB size) - is it enough to wait until the poo is mostly green or should I wait a week or so to be super sure?

Should I get a video monitor?  Do I even really need a monitor at all?  Our house is 1500 sq ft and the only time I can picture not being able to hear her is if she's sleeping in her crib and I'm in the basement with the TV up loud which happens pretty much never.  If I really need these things, someone please link me one to buy because I need to order it now and am brain dead on decision making.  Also, where do I put the camera for the video?  It seems like ( from pictures on the boxes) people mount it on the end of the crib and I can't imagine how that's not a safety hazard with the cord.

Do I dare get a pedicure with this rash I have?  I badly want one before I deliver but after my traumatic waxing experience (ultra sensitive skin out of nowhere) & how swollen I am I'm scared.  Perhaps the better question, how do I convince the barely-English speaking ladies at the nail place not to touch or put anything on my legs, do my feet only?

How can I get away with not telling my mother I'm being induced?  I cannot deal with patting her hand all week but I can't think of another plausible reason why my MIL is in town and there's no way she won't know once MIL is here.

That's all I got for now.
  • Ok! here is another dumb one. I just got stung by a bee on the foot. I am not allergic, thankfully. Any potential issues for LO?
  • Here's one: what's the best thing I can do for hip pain? I went to BCT a couple years ago, and washed out for medical reasons.

I've had bad hip issues on my left side ever since, and between LO kicking my hips, and this pg, and DH accidentally pushing me the wrong way when we were playing around, I am in absolute tears in pain.

I don't think my doctor can x-ray it, and I know the stronger pain meds aren't considered safe, so I was hoping someone might have coping/pain management tips. Anyone...?

I've got a dumb one too. Ftm here. When I'm bf, do I switch from side to side in the same feeding, and if so, how do I know when to switch? And if bebe only eats one side do I pump the other ?
  • @ceh789 as far as the CD if you want to start in the beginning and you are worried about staining you can buy some fleece and cut liners. You can wash the liners with the diapers and it washes out just fine. If you really want to wait a few days should be fine.

  • Hopefully this wasn't asked already but how many swaddling blankets do I really need? We got SO many at our shower that I feel like I could take some back and get some stuff we need. I've washed 4. I have prob 6 more that aren't washed. Same with receiving blankets. So. Many.

  • So much for my BH theory!

Did you do any precooking and freezing of meals before your due date?  About how long did it take before you were healed and settled enough for you or DH to start cooking again?

I'm bored! We need more dumb questions!!!

Okay, here's a pretty dumb one for you: I have rectal thermometer that I used when DD was an infant. Do I need to buy a new one for this LO, or can I just clean the one I have with rubbing alcohol?
I've been told by all the nurses who gave me advice - DO NOT use rectal thermometers. You can damage the colon (??) get one that goes under baby's arm, or the forehead strips

Eta: or can damage bowel? I don't know what it can damage, but something. They highly recommend not using it.
Seriously?? I feel so stupid. I heard rectal was most accurate so that's what we did whenever she was sick. That's also what the nurses did
  • Here's a question: is 37-38 weeks too late for a prenatal massage? I just got a gift cert for a spa day from my mom, I guess she can see how miserable I am and wants me to get some relief ;)

As long as you tell them you should be fine. I got mine at 35 weeks and it was great! There are all these rules about what they are allowed to do, like only light massage on your lower back. I can't see it being a problem.

  • After reading the board about going into labor at work here is my dumb question: I teach at a school about an hour away from the hospital. If I go into labor at school, will I still be able to drive with those first early contractions? I'm sure I could find a co-worker, or my dad who works down the street to drive me, but it would be nice to drive myself.

Second question: would I need to go home right away, or could I continue working until the end of the day?

I know everyone's labor is different, I'm just wondering what people's experience has been. I'm planning on working up until my due date.

  • Regarding CD's - I'm getting ready to wash them all tomorrow. The packaging said to wash them 6xs!! Do I seriously need to wash them that many times? And they are supposed to air dry between washes....That would take a week to do!

  • Okay, I have a REALLY dumb, only semi-serious question. Do you think animals know when you're about to go into labor?

I ask because my sister has two cats. I am a dog person; I hate cats. These cats hate me. We tend to avoid each other. They usually leave the room if I come in. The last few days they have both totally been up my ass, meowing outside my bedroom door at night and following me everywhere. It's weird as hell. They've left me alone my entire pregnancy, why now?

  • @northernlights we went in and met with the ped for about thirty minutes. I thought it was worth it if you have the time. What other doctor do you get to do that with? We found out he has kids, understands things, wants me to nurse, etc. I am so,glad we did it.

  • So I searched the board for interviewing a pediatrician, some people do some don't. I've gotten some good recs from friends so I guess my question is, once I pick someone do I go in and make an appointment to meet them in person or just call when I need to see them? I originally was just going to go with my old ped but driving an hour for a sick visit seems excessive so now I need to find someone new.

I did the interview, but Ped already had reccs from family and friends. Afterwards I realized I didn't need to interview her, as how I plan to raise LO is same as those friends and fam.

It depends completely on the type of diapers.  If the diapers are made completely of synthetic materials (PUL, microfiber, etc) then one wash is fine.  And you can totally put PUL and microfiber in the dryer.  People say it will delaminate but it is a myth (unless your dryer is broke).  They can withstand heat up to 400 degrees.

If they are natural fibers (cotton, bamboo, hemp) there are natural oils still in the fibers that will repel urine.  For example, prefolds would have natural oils if they are new.  You would want to wash those the multiple times to get the best absorbency.

I like natural fibers, but I will be honest.  I never prep my diapers more than 1 wash.  I just expect that my new diapers will take a few washes to become the most absorbent.

Every office is going to be different. Most offices have set prenatal appointments/meetings. At the office I worked at when in college, we only did one group meeting per month so I suggest calling the office to see what their policy is! Once you decide that's the office you want to go to, call and ask how they do their newborn appointment scheduling. Most offices want to see you 2-3 days after released from the hospital. Some offices will want you to call them while your still at the hospital (after delivery) to get scheduled while some are ok with you waiting til you get home to call and they will squeeze you in.

My cats have been doing this to me for weeks, if it's any consolation :)
    Mine have as well.
Now- the one that has been attached to my hip this most is starting to avoid me now...we'll see what this means.

    For real question:
Is it to early to sterilize bottles?

  • @FarmBoysWife and @Rita092010 - thank you!!! Guess I'm gonna be running the wash non-stop today! Good to know I don't need to dry btw each load and that's is more about the washing. Super excited - I have 15 newborn and 25 regular sized....Hoping that'll do it, at least for a while.

    Love this thread!!

With the way my labor started with DS at home, I was a nervous wreck but if I HAD TO I could have driven myself home those first hours. It really all depends on how your labor progresses. If you plan on finishing the day have a backup to pick you up and take you and the standing and walking will only progress labor.

We had a SM whose water broke at work, she finished her 10 hour shift and gave birth 6 hours later. So it is possible but you need to be ready for all types of labor (short 6 hour start to finish, long 3 day labor etc)
Thank you! I will defiantly have a plan for anything!

  • I know we discussed how warm to keep the nursery. And the conclusion was to dress LO accordingly.

My dumb FTM question: what can LO wear to bed? Obviously sleepers. But is it ok to do socks, onesies underneith sleepers, sleepers inside the zip up sleeping bag things (lol I don't know the name of them)

I'm just curious how much can you later clothing on a baby. I know the more layering will equal harder diaper changes, but take that out of the equation for now.

@jennbaylor12 - no. I never do. 1 wash is fine. They just get more absorbent the more you wash them, and trust me you'll get there soon :) I assume these are prefolds? You don't have to air dry prefolds either. They do just fine in the dryer

They are Bumgenius 4.0 and Newborn. I went back and read and I think it meant wash the dark ones 6xs separately from the light colored ones, not before using at all... I'm washing the light ones and the inserts now, then will wash the dark ones.... Maybe not 6xs each but at least 3xs. And I think I'll laundry dry them today and save the sun drying for once they've actually been used!

  • Friends of ours gave us close to 75 (yes you read that right) 5 oz medela bottles from their girls. We have some Dr. Browns as well (4 of the small and 4 large). How many of these medela bottles should I keep? I don't like having excess. I don't like clutter. I was thinking of keeping maybe 5 and donating the rest to a women's shelter if they'll accept them.

I'm going to try to breastfeed exclusively and introduce pumped milk closer to when I go back to work after 10-12 weeks, if that influences anyone's answer.

I brought 6 bottles to work with me, so I'd keep a dozen personally. We have something close to 30 bottles in the house from DS.

Agreed. You don't realize how many bottles you go through in a day. Plus, I pumped directly into bottles.

  • Have a question for the new moms or stms...are
The first few weeks as cruel as the nurse teaching the hospital class made it out? She said you will feed or pump every two hours, this count down for the next time starts at the beginning of the previous...and after you feed, change diaper, burp, you might only have 30-45 minutes to sleep, each time...is this on the for reals?

Ok here is my dumb question. I need to get a robe for the hospital, I saw on one of the stores I was browsing that they had a robe that specifically said nursing on it, will I need this or will just a regular robe suffice? I have nursing tanks and pajamas if that makes a difference.

You don't really even NEED to get a robe. I'm bringing a maternity one I got cheap just because I have it. I didn't bring one with DS and don't remember ever wishing I had brought one.
