Do you have any good stories from your labor?

We want to hear about the surprisingly good stuff that happened during your labor. Did you end up being besties with your nurse? Did you see firsthand how much your partner loves you? Maybe you appreciated the fact that you were in charge? Or that all your body issues disappeared? What surprisingly good things happened while you were in labor?

  • During my C-section I could actually feel pain (worst pain of my life). But when my husband brought the baby over to show me, the pain seemed so distant it barely registered. It was amazing. Of course, they had to take him away again and the pain came back. But the drugs started kicking in more by then. :)
  • All in all, labor was a very smooth process for me. It was only a few moments before my son was born, and I was pushing with all my might. My husband on one side, my mum on the other. Very intense... In comes the doctor. She just strolls in and out of nowhere thrusts her finger up towards me and exclaims, "Oh my goodness!" Of course we were all on edge thinking something was wrong. She  just goes, "You're nails are beautiful."

So not the time to compliment my sparkly manicure. But thanks... i guess. Everyone got a pretty nice laugh.

  • ^^so. i guess that wasn't "surprisingly good" but it was surprising.

  • I was surprised at my instincts. I was going to be induced, but I chose a c section as I didn't believe I would progress. I learned during my c section that my baby had his cord wrapped 3x around his neck and would not have tolerated labor. He is very healthy and I don't know what would have happened had I tried a vaginal delivery.

  • I'd been having contractions since the week of Thanksgiving and was pretty much miserable since my due date wasn't until January 22nd. Anyway, on January 4th, my back pain was the worst and I was feeling plain awful. That evening the pain stopped. A little after midnight, my water broke and I drove myself to the hospital since my husband had already left for work. I had no contractions and no pain at all. It was really weird. I got to the hospital and I was already at 5 centimeters. I kept having contractions but didn't feel anything. I didn't question it. Long story short, I ended up having to have a c-section because he got stuck. I felt some of the c-section and that sucked but then they pulled him out and I heard him cry and it was so worth it. No matter how bad it had been, every time I look at him there's no question that I would do it again in a heart beat. I'm so in love with him.
  • I had sciatica and other nerve pain throughout my entire pregnancy. When I went into labor, I opted to have an epideral, and my body took to it extremely well. I felt better than I'd felt in MONTHS! My epideral worked so well, in fact, that I couldn't even feel the urge to push like my nurse said I would. This made me nervous, but somehow, I still managed to do it properly. My daughter came out after pushing through just three contractions. The only thing I felt when she came out was the sudden relief of pressure on my rib cage, which was just icing on the cake. Of course, I was in pain again after the medicine wore off, but at that point I was holding my precious girl in my arms, so I hardly even noticed.
  • Mine was so fast that my body was pushing with my pants on! My midwives had to scramble to get them off me. 1.5 hours of labor and my little girl was born into my hands:)
  • i had my mom and husband in the delivery room. they both had to hold me legs while i pushed. my husband hates feet, but he helped out like a champ. and when they put her on my chest right away, i looked at him and saw he was crying. ive never seen him cry. hes a former Marine. i had horrible complications after, but he stayed with me and didnt flinch when they fixed me up, no matter how much it scared him.
  • I was at work on Thanksgiving, and every time I stood up a little bit of fluid would leak. I thought that since I was carrying my baby so low, and I was 38 weeks that I was just peeing myself because I didn't feel any "contractions". I was uncomfortable the whole night, and my husband was standing in line at GameStop getting his Xbox one. I just ended up laying in my bathtub for my "cramping" to go away. I woke up in the morning feeling great, but not my baby. By 4 I met up with doctor at the hospital because I could not feel her moving much. Once I was on the monitors she was just fine, but my blood pressure was 165 over the number that doesn't matter so they kept me there for a longgggg time monitoring it. Finally at about 530 a doctor came in and decided to just check my progression and it turns out I was 6.5 cm dilated. And I wasn't peeing my self but I was leaking amniotic fluid. My nurse was entirely shocked that I was just sitting up in bed talking like its nothing and not really being able to tell what my contractions were, even though they could see them on the screen. They took me from triage to a labor room (my water ended up fully breaking three steps away from that bed and all I cared about was that no one would step in my bodily fluids, not that my ass was hanging out of my gown) and they started fluids, antibiotics for how long it had been since my fluids began leaking, and my quickly requested epidural. 45 quick minutes later I was laughing at my purple baby and my husband just cried over my shoulder at our pretty purple bundle who ended up pooping her first time about four minutes into her new life. And thank goodness, I never actually had to change a "sticky" poop. She had quite regular bowel movements and every one was with the nurses! By the time we were home she was all cleared out :)
  • I had a great labor. I was so tuned in to my body I was able to enjoy the process despite the pain. I mentally prepared myself to have a natural birth as soon as I found out I was pregnant so during my pregnancy I prepared my body with meditation and working out almost daily. During labor I sat in the run filled with warm water until I was about 8cm dilated which is when my doctor broke my water bag. 2 hour later I stepped out the tub and was only 9cm dilated. That last cm was the hardest. I kept asking how will I know when it's time to push and the doctor said "oh you'll know" and sure enough I felt that one contraction where I thought my back, stomach and private parts were gonna blow open from the pain. And sure enough it was time to push. Pushing took some time to get used to. I almost passed out so they gave me oxygen which helped then during the ring of fire they told me to push slowly...omg!!! Why would you want to push slowly when your vagina feels like its on fire? Lol...I ended up telling them I have to push!!! I tried so hard to hold my daughter in but my foot slipped and kicked the doctor and out came my baby! They put my girl on my chest and the first thing she did was look right into my eyes. 6 weeks later, we are inseparable! My doctor showed me the placenta which they call the "tree of life". I took mine home and planted it with a gardenia plant in honor of my daughter. When I was pregnant, my "angels" visited me once and left their mark with gardenia fragrance. My whole pregnancy and birth experience was fabulous. And I'm a single mommy. Now postpartum, I make no excuses. I get tired, I can't always take a shower or eat when I want to but I do it all alone. My girl is my greatest teacher and I am honored to be her guardian angel here on earth. :)
  • I kept moving the toco monitor down my abdomen as I was pushing, just like the nurse had done. My mom held one leg, my husband held the other. The tech held the mirror and kept count. The nurse just laughed at me moving the toco monitor like "hey that's my job" Everyone got a good chuckle at that.

  • When I was getting my epidural, my husband was standing by holding my hand through the contractions I was having. As they were getting closer to being done with the procedure, I feel my husband's hand putting more pressure on mine. I look up to see him stumble backwards and one of the nurses grab hold of him. He didn't completely pass out, but they did sit him down on the floor and get him a glass of juice. After that all was good. He was super helpful while I was pushing... watching the birth of our son didn't phase him, but the needle going into my back did. Our little munchkin man is almost 8 weeks old now.

I had a gorgeous homebirth.  Our daughter was born on our bed.  I labored for 4.5 hours and pushed for 20 mins.  It was surreal.  Both of my baby's grandmothers were there when she was born.  My husband was kneeling in front of me and caught our daughter.  It was all absolutely amazing, and incredibly empowering.
  • After 3 sons, the youngest 8 years old, my husband and I thought late night feedings and diaper changes were over. So when I found out I was pregnant this past August, I was undecided about being excited about starting all over again. However, this past Wednesday, I fell in love all over again. I was induced at 8am due to my GD diagnosis, and once I started contracting on my own, was taken off pitocin. I was given my epidural, but when my water was broken at 7 cm dialated, it must have moved, because I felt every pain from that moment on. Just 6 hours into labor, I met the most beautiful, precious addition to our family. Ultimately, I decided to breastfeed, and I believe that has added to the strong bond I feel with him. Fifteen years ago, I fell in love with my husband, thirteen, ten, and eight years ago I fell in love with my sons, and now finally I have fallen in love again with my fourth son.
  • I was happy that my labour was just,.. For me it was perfect! Sure I had to be induce because my water broke a few days early and the chances of LO getting an infection was high so I couldn't go med free like planned. I just wanted to see everything and be able to enjoy it more, so a mirror was in the room. I just loved every minute of it, even cried a lot when the doctor place LO on my stomach. I still get chills about it.

  • I have a few! I was induced and was terrified I would be in labor for 40 hours and need a c section, but everything went so smoothly and from the start of pit to delivery, it was 11 hours.

We had a wonderful nurse who stayed two hours over her shift to see our baby born.

My favorite was finding out we had a son! We were team green but after a tech called baby "she" and "her" we thought we were having a girl! That moment was so special and made being surprised that much better!
  • My contractions started at 220am that were 2 min apart. I have 2 kids at home so we had to wake the neighbors to come babysit. We live 3 miles from the hospital but didn't quite make it. I delivered a baby girl while in route at 250am. Thankfully she's healthy and there were no complications
  • The doctor that administered the epidural's name was Dr. Smiley I thought that was a great name!
  • My doctor was out of town for the weekend. I wasn't due till the next week and she felt I wouldn't be coming in yet based on where baby was setting and I hadn't been having many Braxton hicks. At noon my water broke and we found out I was already 6cm dilated. Within an hour full labor came on. Two hours later I was pushing. About an hour into pushing the on-call doc pulled out his phone smiled and sent a text. He gloved back up and said my regular doc wanted to know if I  thought I could hold out till the next day when she would be back in town. Our daughter was born about an hour later after getting her little shoulders stuck.
  • I had my DS in January, but just now really started on here. The day my water broke, my DH had planned to make the turkey he had gotten from work. Since my water broke early that morning, my MIL made the turkey for us to have when we got home. Our LO was born after midnight that night and all I had eaten that day was a grilled cheese. So the nurses offered to bring me something to eat which I was so thankful for. They ended up bringing me a turkey sandwich which I just found hilarious. Also, one of the nurses on the floor turned out to be my second cousin and I didn't know until my grandparents came up to see us.

I love reading all of your labour stories, I get emotional reading them and it makes me this of mine so here goes Sunday march 9th I was in "nesting" mode. I called my mom and told her I was cleaning my fridge, she said to me "its soon time!! " hubby and I later that day went to my parents for supper, she made chili and I ate a big bowl of it. When I got home, settled in for the night I started having light cramping. I told hubby it must have been the chili. All that night off and on I had light cramps. The next day all I did was run to the bathroom to poo!! I blamed it on moms chili LOL. Anywho all day monday I had light cramps, I was starting to believe that it wasn't moms chili and thinking I may be having contractions. I called the hospital around noon and told the nurse on the phone about my contractions. Because they weren't consistent they told me to stay home. I live 30 minutes a way from the hospital. Anyway fast foward to 7 pm, contractions were starting to be more consistent so I called the hospital again and they told me to head down. By the time we got last minute things packed and dropped my dogs off at my parents we got to the hospital at 830. I got registered, hooked up to the machine to monitor my contractions. By that time it was 9 pm, then my water broke at. 9:30. I asked the nurse for something for the pain, she said she would have to see how far along I am. The first nurse checked me and almost didn't believe I was already 6 cm so she got another nurse to check. I wasn't 6 cm I was going 7cm!! My husband and I looked at each other in disbelief!! We both couldn't believe I was this far along!! So I headed down to the delivery room and sat on the labour ball. The nurse wanted me to try the gas, honestly it worked for me. And that's all the pain relief I could have because I was progressing so fast. Then the doctor came to check me, this was around 11:30, she said hunny you're ready to push!! As delivery begun, my sons heart rate dropped 2 times. The nurses, doctor, and my husband were amazing!! They had me every which way trying to get his heart rate back. Come to find out his cord was around his next. At this point I was so out of it from the intense pain I don't remember much other the pushing for an hour and delivering my baby boy!! After delivery my husband realized that the one nurses he knew!! He use to fight fires with her husband!! Hubby is a volunteer fire finger. I honestly don't think I could have done this if it wasn't for my husband. When I said I can't do this, he kept saying yes you can!! He held my one leg and was there for me every step of the way!! I tore badly, and it took the doctor a half hour to stitch me up. I honestly think that was almost as bad as labour itself!! The two nurses that were with my throughout my delivery were so nice. After my delivery I told them I was so hungry lol they didn't have access to the cafeteria but did make me some toast. The one nurse came by at the end of her shift to see how I was and to say goodbye. Even in the 2 weeks of me going through crying at any point if the day for no reason he was there for me!! Now a month later we have adjusted being first time parents! We're both so happy to have our little boy in our life!!
  • My labor and delivery didn't go at all how I had planned.  I woke up on January 22nd and as I got out of bed I lost my mucus plug, but thought my water broke because I had this gush of fluid.  We rushed around and got going to the hospital (during rush hour traffic) and arrived.  Once I was assessed we found out my water had not broken.  I probably should have stayed home but as a first time mom I had no idea what was going on.

I labored naturally for the morning up until around 3pm when I was finally moved to a delivery room.  They decided at that time to break my water and I decided to get the epidural as the pain in my back got more and more intense. I labored the whole evening and my contractions were 2 minutes apart for a long time before I got to 10 cm.  By this time it was nearly midnight, my husband and mom were there and it was time to start pushing.  We did have one scare during the labor when her heartrate dropped really low and they had to keep moving me around to get it back up.

Once I started pushing, not much progress was happening and I had to rest and push.  This went on for 2 almost 3 hours before the on call OB told my midwife I needed a c-section.  Baby was not going to come out on her own and turns out the cord was all wrapped around her feet.  I think the hardest part of having the c-section was not getting to hold my baby right away.

  • Apparently I have a high pain threshold!
My mid wives couldn't believe i was able to talk through my contractions.

I'm a first timer, did sooo much research and spent my whole pregnancy mentally preparing my self for what was to come.
I spent most part of my labour in a bath tub, staying cool calm and collected, used the gas and had most of my pain early on - I requested something stronger at this point and received a morphine shot.
Little did I know that the feeling you get like you have the strong urge to go to the toilet for a number two was the sign that my little girl was on her way.

I of course didn't want to harass the staff and would bear down as I felt I needed too (but not strongly) which kept my pain during the contractions bare able.
Almost 2 hours passed like this and the trainee mid wife was sent in every so often to check babies heart rate and that I hadn't drowned in the tub when my hubby made visits too the loo or went out to make phone calls.
All was fine, I mentioned to the mid wife (after a while of being unsure and putting up with the urge to do a number 2) I think I need to push and told him that I kept wanting to sit on the toilet (I was so worried I would poo during delivery).
He eventually got the qualified mid wife in and got me on the table to see that I was 10cm dilated. (Getting out of the bath and dealing with gravity made the pain a lot worse)
The qualified mid wife said haven't you wanted to push and I said during a contraction "yes, but I didn't want to worry you cos you said I would likely be hours from the last cervix check", she burst out laughing and said gee honey you must have a strong pain threshold looked at the trainee and said she's even talking through her contractions.... I said oh I thought I was being drama queen enough with my whining during the earlier on contractions when I was only 4cms.

She then turned my concentration to the noises next door of a woman screaming bloody murder and I was shocked and amazed at how well I had coped.
Mind you once babies head was crowning and I had hardly any more energy to push I was in a world of pain!
I kept going thanks to my amazing husband and his motivation and knowing the reward would come when it was all over. All I wanted for 9 months was to hold my baby girl! And I got to, a healthy 3.5 KG 50cm girl!

Waters broke at 315am and she was delivered at 1.26pm
Best experience ever and I Can't wait to start planning baby #2 and I hope and pray to have a similar labour!!!

  • I had my first contraction at 8:50 am, by 9:30 my husband asked if he should call the midwife, I said "no, its too early" but he called them anyway, started filling the pool and I secretly pushed the whole hour it took to finish filling the pool. My husband said with pride" pool is ready".....then he looked down between my legs and saw the baby's hair, upon which I said " yah, not getting in there, baby is coming NOW! He caught his daughter, but wait..a penis?....Surprise it's a boy! Placenta came out shortly after....and then the midwives walked through the door. All in all 2hrs and 6 minutes and a very clean, unused birthing tub. I knew I wasn't going to use it after all, but it gave my sweet husband something to do.

I went all natural for labor, and decided to get in the shower during transition... which lasted three hours.  For the second half I was on my hands and knees with the water on my back.  At one point I looked up at my husband, who had taken off his shoes and rolled up his pants.  Apparently i kept covering the drain with the towel I was kneeling on, and I managed to flood the entire bathroom, extending out into my hospital room!
  • I love reading other womens' birth experiences, so thanks for sharing everyone!

I labored for ~14hrs with contractions about 2-3 min apart the WHOLE time! The back-to-back contractions were intense. Buuut, when we got to triage, I was only at 3cm - I was SO disappointed because, having planned a natural birth, I knew I couldn't handle 7 more centimeters worth of back-to-back contractions every 2min.  So I caved and got the epidural, but a short while later, it wore off on my left side, and I could feel the contractions again. No fair! I paid good money for that epi and I expected it to work! After clarifying that I was feeling PAIN not PRESSURE, they had to give me 2 extra doses of epi medicine (because it wore off AGAIN later on). They explained that the we were trying to "stay ahead" of the contractions as they worsened with epi medicine, but the contractions were so frequent that they were "beating" the medicine, which is why it "wore off" twice. In retrospect, I'm glad it wore off  so I could more fully experience those stages of labor, since I'd wanted a natural birth but things didn't quite pan out. After my second dose of epi medicine, the nurse noticed my water had broken and checked my progress - she said "I can see her hair! It's probably almost time to push." Once the Dr. came in to verify that my dilation was complete, it was pushin' time... THREE pushes later, my hubs and I met our little girl! What a glorious ride!
  • Going into it I was pretty adamant to give birth drug free. I left myself open to the possibility of pain meds if it came to it, but I'm a pretty stubborn person.

Unfortunately I had to be induced (LO was 11 days late) and the Pitocin was BRUTAL. After 9 hours of suffering, I'd gone from 3cm to 4cm. The nurse said my body tensing from the pain was stopping the delivery from progressing faster. And that at this rate, it would be at least 8 more hours.

On her recommendation, I finally took the epidural. At first I felt like I failed, but now I'm like "Why did I wait so long?!" After getting it, I went from 4cm to a delivered baby in just over 3 hours. And I actually ENJOYED the labor and even got a nap in before the big push.

  • I was told from FIVE ultrasounds that our baby was a girl so we had a pink nursery and closet/drawers stuffed with pink things! Imagine our surprise on May 1, 2014 when after a 17 hour natural delivery I had a BOY!! My mom surprised us by redoing the entire nursery, packing away all girl clothes and buying sooner boy things by the time we got home from the hospital! We were completely shocked, but couldn't be happier! :)
  • My induction started at 9 a.m. and my nurse was awesome! She was so attentive and caring...Just an all-around great nurse. Her shift ended at 6 p.m. and I was so bummed she was leaving, but she told me how excited she was for me and that she'd be there at 6 a.m. the next morning to meet my little man.

Well, things didn't go exactly as planned. I labored until 1 a.m. the following morning, and pushed from 1 until 5. I was so exhausted at that point so we tried the vacuum. That failed, so emergency C-section it was.

I was so tired and so cold in the operating room that all I could think about was getting a blanket. I turned my head to the side after they pulled my little one out and I see that nurse come in saying "What are you doing in here?"

She was genuinely disappointed that I had to get a C-section because she knew how badly I wished to avoid it. (She was also pretty irritated with my OB for using the vacuum, but that's a different story altogether).

Needless to say the entire day she was so attentive, once again, and did anything and everything to make me feel comfortable (something I cannot say about some of the other nurses). She was not working the rest of the week, so I was kind of bummed about that, but I just felt so lucky to have her there for those two days.

  • I had a wonderful pregnancy and labor start to finish.  I was told at a young age that I either would not be able to have children or have extreme difficulty getting/staying pregnant if I did bc of a blood coagulation disorder.  I became pregnant almost instantly after trying for the first time right after I was married last summer.  I had 3 high risk pregnancy doctors monitor me weekly the entire pregnancy and every appt was good news, or no news, which is great news!

I was induced early (38wks) to avoid a higher risk of clotting.  Induction to labor was only 22 hours of which I was in pain for only 3 or so before I got the epidural.  When we started pushing I had my husband on one side and my mother on the other.  The l&d room was big and bright with huge windows that were casting sunlight into the room and it was very quiet and peaceful with soft music playing in the background my husband had brought.

When my OB came in after I had been laboring for an hour and a half she prepped me and then looked into my eyes and asked if I was ready to meet my son and an overwhelming rush of emotions took over. I felt like the luckiest person in the world to have beaten all odds and knew he would be in my arms in minutes and started balling! Of course everyone started asking me if I was ok, was having pain, etc and I just told everyone that I was so happy and ready to push.  I pushed only twice and he was there on my chest screaming! My husband broke into tears right along with me and we just stared at him in complete awe.  I am so unbelievably in love with this child and feel so blessed to have had such a beautiful and uneventful experience :)

  • I guess labor can never have good stories.
  • I was induced with picotin, too, and immediately started having contractions every 2 or 3 minutes.. it was really painful and hard and I was really uncomfortable and nauseous the entire time.  After 10 hours, I was so happy to get an epidural and immediately the pain went away and the doctor told me to sleep for a while.  They woke me up to start getting ready for labor and I smiled through the whole thing, (another 5 hours or so), I couldn't feel a thing, I was tired but so freaking excited to finally meet my baby that I couldn't not smile, my husband was worried something was wrong with me b/c I was so happy, but we came through labor still smiling.  Best day of my life!
  • From pregnancy to delivery everything was amazing. I am very fortunate to actually be my ob's nurse. :) I was a high risk pregnancy for history of pre-term labor. I did weekly shots of progestrone (16-36 weeks) to strengthen my cervix. I am happy to report, our beautiful daughter made it to 39 and 3! I worked up until the day before I had her! A fit pregnancy made all the diffrence with labor also. 4 1/2 hours. With my son, bed rest at 28 weeks, gained 73 lbs and had a 12 hr labor with a 3rd degree tear. With my daughter, 29 lbs, and no tears. They were the same size in weight, he was just 1 inch longer than her. I am so pleased with my care from the hospital. Everyone was amazing! Epidural was perfect! I am no one's hero and have nothing to prove. lol I'm weak. Best part is one week out I have already lost 23 lbs! I always preach to my patients every pregnancy is different. Now I am a firm believer! Life is beautiful! My son is one very proud big brother! (9 years apart) she was a vacation surprise!
  • I was blessed and fortunate to have amazing nurses. I had two different ones because I arrived in the early morning and their was a shift change at 7am but both nurses were amazing. But my labor was bad until my epidural and I loved how the nurse coached me through until the epidural took and I was pain-free. She was great. But the greatest thing was when my DS came out with just one push because while we were waiting for a contraction he wiggled himself out. It was great to finally hold the little guy who caused me so many neurological issues this time around and it was nice that all my issues went away once I held him. In the end all of it was worth it because I know have two amazing boys!

  • The babies head was coming out and I had to wait an HOUR before my Doc got back from MCDONALDS! Luckily i had an Epidural.. So i didnt feel a thing! ;)

  • My husband is in a popular local band. As tends to happen with frontmen, he gets recognized pretty often and it can be both flattering and kind of a pain to be interrupted when we go out together. While I was in labor he joked about putting a few names on a Do Not Admit list, in case any creepier fans chose to come congratulate us. When we told the nurse about his band our attending OB chimed in, "Yeah, I didn't want to be unprofessional, but I saw you play last weekend. You guys really rocked." Now the band has a new group of fans he brings out to see them play, and he always asks about our son.
  • Hubby was too tall (6'3") for the OR scrubs for my CS... His groin was in his stomach when he zipped up his suit. So we had a few laughs with our nurse whilst he cut a hole in the crotch area to make room for his torso! Lol. And yes, I was in active labor then had my CS. I also cried when the OB confirmed I was in active labor because I just wasn't mentally prepared for my DD to come early at 37 weeks. I cried that I didn't have time to get my pedicure... BUT I had just gotten my hair done that same night so half of my plan worked!
  • My labor was awesome. I had contractions all day but had also had contractions during the week and nothing happened. I was convinced nothing was happening. At 10:30pm I took a shower then went to bed but I kept squeezing my husband's hand because the contractions hurt. At midnight I had had enough and decided we needed to go to the hospital. I was checked and was 7cm. Labored in the tub for a few hours. Went to the bed was checked again was 9cm, midwife asked me to bear down to try to get my water to break. After doing this for a while I begged her to break it, and after about 30 min I was checked again and was at 10cm. I was told to push when I felt the need. And pushed like 5times. When you feel the urge to push you have to push, my body wouldn't let me not push. Anyway, little man was born at 4:22am on his due date.
