Re: UO Thursday

  • Plastic bags are recyclable; they have giant bins in front of most supermarkets and Target that say "recycle your plastic bags here." That's where my leftover bags go (I do try to use reusable bags because they're easier to carry, but Orange County has not banned plastic, so if I forget, I get more free trash can liners).

I say "we" when referring to my favorite football team because it takes less time to say that (as in, "we just got a touchdown") and have the people I'm talking to know I mean my team and not the other (because if you say "they just scored a touchdown," it can sound like the other team did).
It's not so much an over-identification with my team; it's more a matter of simplicity.

I don't have my own opinion this week. Oh, well.

Speaking on financial assistance i'm sure I'll get flamed for this but here it goes; I don't agree with the Dream act (yes I voted). I feel that it in a way it attracts more illegal immigrants and the financial aid portion is unfair to the American children who have to pay the full amount for tuition. I feel like there should be a clause it the act that makes those who receive education out here stay out here and aid in our society instead of taking their degrees and what they've learned back to their home countries
So you think that the Dreamers should be punished for their parents' actions?
How could I have missed this!!! Ok here I go. It does not attract more illegal immigrants there is a lot of restrictions to it. And they do not go back to their countries why would they?? When their countries are all f'ed up. I have a few friends who the dream act just changed their life. I have cousins born in US soil who are just trash and do nothing with their lives and im sorry most low income young americans do the same thing. In here are those immigrants busting their ass trying to make their parents proud and they couldn't way because they did not have a green card and they never came here by choice. Their parents wanted a better life for them. I can personally say my friend is now a teacher thanks to the dream act and she can live her dream. I have another friend who will very soon be a police officer. The dream act is life changing.
I agree that the Dream Act is life changing. I live in California where I personally know people who are attending school and are provided financial assistance to make their way through college.  Take my Step Mom's sister for example, she's attending UNLV to get her Nursing degree.  She plans on going back to the Philippines once she's done.  While I do find it helpful, what about those "Dreamers" in our own backyard who can't get the same assistance?   What i'm saying is I don't see how it stimulates OUR economy when a large portion of them are taking their education back to their economies.

It doesn't matter where he was born (McCain born in Panama. Ted Cruz born in Canada). There is no reason he should have shown his birth certificate.
I agree. ANd I don't think he actually ever DID show it, did he?? I thought he was asked to, and basically didn't respond. Which is correct.

It's just a term. I am not intolerant. I just think it's ridiculous to say the reason he is so disliked by so many is because he is black. That's an insulting comment as well. Are there people in this world who are racist and hold his race against him, you bet and that is absolutely disgusting. But to say the many issues people have with him are directly related to the color of his skin is incorrect.

See bolded...that was about as intolerant as it gets. People don't forget when you spout garbage like that. So when you chime in on something regarding race, and blame someone for playing the race card regarding our President....it doesn't look so great.

I hope I'm wrong...maybe you embrace everyone. But it doesn't appear that way.

Actually, it DOES matter where he was born, if both his parents were not US citizens.  ClandestineX said above that his father is Kenyan - I don't know if that is true or not, but if it is, and he was also born in Kenya, he would not be eligible to be president.

That said, his birth certificate said he was born in Hawaii so it's a moot point (you know, like a cow's opinion).

  • It does matter where he was born. In order to be president you have to be a natural born citizen regardless of where your parents were born. Natural born means on American soil: one of the 50 states or territories. That includes American territories in other countries, ie: an Air Force base in Yemen or the the U. S. Embassy in Germany.

You are still eligible if born abroad, as long as your parents are both US citizens at the time of your birth.  I just googled it because i was curious:

I mean come on now, in 2001 mass amounts of Muslim people across the US were being targeted by citizens because of 9/11 and it took a few years to die down... but there is still a giant hate for any type of Middle Eastern person in the US still.

Obama is most definitely not a muslim.

I stand corrected. Though that was one of his giant things when going into the White House.. that was one of the reasons why he was labeled terrorist to begin with. Apparently he labels himself Christian, but he also says he has very deep Muslim connections through his father and growing up in Indonesia.

Internet rumor probably started to discredit him-- he did live in Indo, but attended Catholic schools, and has been an active member of a church in Chicago for nearly 30 years.

His father is Muslim, but is basically agnostic. Obama has said himself that he has tried many different religions and has recently settled with Christianity. The rumor about him being Muslim was probably because of his father being so and living in a heavily Muslim area. Though, I honestly do not care what religion he is. He wasn't called a terrorist for his skin color. Maybe by the KKK, but who listens to them anymore?

It wasn't recent though - he's been a member of Unity Church of Christ in Chicago for like 25 years.  One of my good friends lives in Chicago and also attends that church, and worked heavily on his first campaign in 2008.

And I don't care what religion he is either - but unfortunately, a lot of people would, given the sad state of affairs especially since 9/11.  If you look on Snopes.com there are two LENGTHY email forward rumors that came out during his first election, all about his alleged Muslim faith...

What I find really interesting though is that then later he came under fire because the pastor at his church in Chicago said some controversial stuff (can't remember what, exactly).  SO basically, haters gonna hate, no matter the reason.

Yeah, his alliance with the church is nothing new. That doesn't mean it is set in stone that is what he is. In 2004, he stated that it took him 40 years to figure out what he was spiritually. In the meantime he studied a lot of different religions.

I can go to a church for 10 years, and still be considered an Atheist.

I misspoke once, doesn't mean my entire point is invalid. Especially after I stated that I was wrong. I do not care what you take seriously, nor do I care for the POTUS's religion, like I said above.

There was a rumor going around that he was Muslim, this WAS the reason people who were not affiliated with the KKK stated he was a terrorist. The only group of people who stated he was a terrorist based on his skin color were in fact the KKK.

AND like I said above, it doesn't matter what church you attend and when you attended it. Sometimes you do go and look at other beliefs to gain more knowledge.

  • I've never heard of 'not recycling.' That makes no sense to me! We had to order a second recycling container because each week our trash container is nearly empty and our recycling was completely full. The majority of things can be recycled. I really, really don't understand. It seems so needlessly wasteful to me. Argh.

  • @ClandestineX, trying to avoid the long quotes, I actually read that interview a while back. Spirituality and religion are two different things so trying to find your spirituality does not mean you don't identify or belong to a religion. Your comment just threw me off - like America had all of a sudden become so tolerant that they would vote a muslim to be president.

And I think the point @Sherina was trying to make was that it's easier to be more sensitive to comments about his race if you are black.

And to the comments about most of the hatred of him having or not having to do with his race, it's not just the tea party - it's the bumper stickers, it's the comments on internet forums (because anonymity brings out people's true feelings) and several other ignorant actions  that point specifically to his race and make no mention of his ideals or political views. I would like to think it's a small minority that feels this way but they are definitely there and it's not just me or anyone else playing the "race card".

  • @clandestinex you just made an ass out of yourself due to your assumption. I NEVER said who I voted for nor why I voted. I gave you an insight into how many people that I have spoken to about the president's race and how it makes them feel. One doesn't have to be Black to understand being Black. What I said was it's hard to understand how the minority feels when they're not like you. The same goes for religious minorities. Would a Jewish person think that another Jewish person understands their point of view better than a Christian? Identifying with a particular group implies that you would have similar experiences, hence more likely sharing points of views.

Please recognize my language. I am not speaking in absolutes and have adequately expressed my ideas about this subject. I'm tired and done.

  • @Hatroops - Religion and/or spirituality were a very very small issue in all of my post, I am just saying why people would call him a terrorist...nothing else. People from opposite political parties have bumper stickers about other political parties, bash them, name call, do whatever. It really isn't anything new... being black doesn't suddenly make it a lot worse. I do find it in bad taste to bash anyone on any side, even if I disagree. I do agree with Kate, when she said that the POTUS should be treated with more respect. Obama, Bush, whoever.

@Sherina825 - Since you're done with your topic, yet asked a question, the answer to your question is not always. Having different religions, to me, is such a small part of one's life. Also to me, being racially different than most people was not a huge issue... plenty of people who were not my race, religion, even gender... spoke up for me and understood me in different ways.

  • Way too many quote trees! Let's see if I can remember everything... I try to recycle as much as I can & feel it is important but I do not bring my own bags :/ I worked in the social worker industry for the last 8 years 100% of my clients use state insurance, food stamps, housing, etc.. Some use SSI. 99% of them were abusing it.... The most frustrating thing ever!! They don't work yet have iPhones, their hair & nails done, big screens, xboxs, etc. so while I believe those programs are great for those who need it, I think our policies need a HUGE revamping. I have a friend with 3 kids, 3 different dads, because her children are different genders they have separate rooms. The state pays for her 3 bed room house, all her utilities, her insurance, her cell phone, $800 a month for food & she doesn't work cuz she would lose it... She leads a way better life than I do, we bust our asses for what we have & really struggle financially... When I got laid off at 8.5 months pregnant I was denied state insurance because I was married. I did things the traditional way & got screwed. Our system is so beyond f'd up. Obama- I think many people don't like him from broken promises, creating larger debt and opposing views. I am sure there are a percentage of people that don't like him because of race but to say majority is wrong and offensive.... Just because someone's skin color is not black does not mean they are racist. I also think there is a large amount of backlash because he refused to place his hand over his heart for the Pledge of Allegiance. I feel that is disrespectful especially from our Nations leader. As mentioned in a previous post; a large amount of black persons who never voted before came out to vote since Obama is black.... I think that is part of the problem & ignorance just to vote for him because of his skin color. Vote because you share the same political views & support his candidacy. Racism goes both ways and to never vote for candidates of a different skin color but to rush to vote for one of your skin color is just as racist towards other candidates.
I wish I could love this 5 times over :) Great points.
