Speaking on financial assistance i'm sure I'll get flamed for this but here it goes; I don't agree with the Dream act (yes I voted). I feel that it in a way it attracts more illegal immigrants and the financial aid portion is unfair to the American children who have to pay the full amount for tuition. I feel like there should be a clause it the act that makes those who receive education out here stay out here and aid in our society instead of taking their degrees and what they've learned back to their home countries

So you think that the Dreamers should be punished for their parents' actions?

  • I think it's weird when people refer to the sports team they follow as "we". Unless, you're on the field I don't think you qualify as part of the "we".
I have said this no less than 1,000,000 times. I think it's even more weird when they are referring to a fan of another team and they say, "y'all."

UO related to other UOs, I guess: When you choose not to recycle and or take as many measures as possible to create less of a negative environmental impact, you are making foolish and ignorant choices. Maybe you believe it'll never come back to harm you? What about your children, their children, and their children etc.

I can't fathom the blind ignorance or perhaps egoism of choosing to be vicious towards the environment for your own convenience.

And those of you who think it is some "conspiracy" and don't "buy into" the environmental hoopla, take some of your internet using time to do some actual research into the matter and educate yourself.
I love you today. I was going to respond to your other post about the social programs. In my experience, when people criticize others that use "government assistance" they are talking about social programs that they don't qualify for. Universal health care is socialism but hands off my Medicare. Food stamps are handouts but government subsidized student.loans? Yes please.
I think we just became best friends too.

I think the year long maternity leave Canadians get is too long (maybe I'm hating just a little :P). I was talking with some friends the other day about the ideal maternity leave period for the modern working woman and we all agreed 3-6 months. IMO, 6 months is perfect - baby is *hopefully* STTN at that point, you have the opportunity to EBF (if you want to) without the added stress of pumping, give their immune system enough time to get stronger before daycare-itis.

But a year? You could very well get pregnant and have another baby in that time and then what? Another year off? I took 3 months off and had a hard enough time getting back into the swing of things, I can't imagine how it would be after a year.
Oh man!! I couldn't disagree more!! I love having my year off! You don't have to take the year off but you are entitled to it! I love having the opportunity to be at home with my daughter. I'm glad that 6 months seems like enough for you but I don't think you should get to decide what works for someone else!

By the way that isn't how the system works .... If you got pregnant within your year off you don't get to take another year off. you have to go back to work and work a certain number of hours before you can take another maternity leave.

I didn't know that was how it worked, but I still think a year off is too long though. I do like the idea of splitting it with your spouse.

Too long for what!? If you don't like the idea of taking off a year that's fine then you wouldn't have to... But how can you decide it's too long for everyone else?!

Well, for one thing then your coworkers have to make up for the work you don't do for a year. In my profession I make up much of the work I don't do over my 6 week maternity leave b/c if I don't do it I am basically dumping all of that onto my partners to do for me. Not very fair. I guess it depends on what kind of job you have.

Here we get contractors to cover for us!

That may be true, but it also shows them the other side to whatever we are debating. I know for a fact that my opinions have changed on subjects (maybe not initially) but after someone said something I researched it more and changed my own opinion. So it is not always a lost cause!

To comment on this, I think that much of the hatred for the president is directly related to the fact that he's Black. I understand that some have political alliances and everything but I've never seen one of those things for George Bush or Bill Clinton. I wish people would call a spade a spade and stop acting like racism isn't alive and prevalent in America.
I don't know who acts like its not because I'm pretty sure everyone in America whether white, black, purple or green is aware that racism is still a very serious issue.

  • EDIT: I just read back up and realized that people who are unemployed don't actually get a refund I guess, so my whole response is kind of dumb. I just hate that some people REALLY take advantage of the system and it's on my dime. I think programs like WIC can be really beneficial, and I would never want a baby to go hungry because his mother can't afford to take care of him... but I also think that people need to be more responsible!
I don't understand why everyone always seems to focus on the "some" that take advantage. I'm not disagreeing that some people do, but no one ever seems to consider the large number of people who do not - the people who have worked and paid into these programs (and didn't have the luxury of having a job that they can't be laid off from) that are now benefiting.
This is based on experience. You base your opinions on the people that you know/ see. I teach in the middle of two major housing projects in my city and I see this all of the time. People who live in a three bedroom apartment and pay $60 a month for rent, get $800 a month for food stamps and $ 700 in SSI Medicaid for all 5 of their kids and continue to have children. Then their children have all of the name brand clothes and they are in the club every weekend and buying 40s and weed. Not saying that there aren't some people who use government assistance for it's a lot of people that make it a lifestyle.

Whatever your political beliefs, you should have some respect for the President by virtue of the office he holds. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that was the kid peeing - usually it's in a Ford or Chevy logo (classy in its own right), but this time it was on the word "Obama." Not ok. I don't care who you voted for, he holds the office of POTUS and deserves more respect than that.

Does racism live in America?...sadly, absolutely. But please don't use the race card when speaking about the hatred for Obama. Should I go hide in the corner?

People Obama is not hated because he is black! If he was he would have never been elected president!
  • I hate when people say husband/wife when they're not married. I don't care if you've been together for a long time or are "practically" married. You're not married, don't use the terms!

What about people who can't legally get married?

Yes you should go hide in a corner! I'm not interested in starting a racial debate but there are other presidents that were more liberal than Obama and none of them got treated the way he does and it ABSOLUTELY has to do with the fact that he's black. You're not that naive, are you?

While some of it has to do with his race, sure, a lot of it has to do with some things he has really no control over but he made it seem like he could control it while campaigning. I get that now days it is basically say anything to get votes.. but still. (This is concerning both sides) Like Kate said above, the POTUS really has no power over these things. I would go as far as to say he is basically the fall guy for congress nowadays. If he, or any president tried to take power, he would probably be impeached faster than you can say "change".

Has any other president had to produce his damn birth certificate though to prove he is "American" enough to run for the office? He absolutely has faced added scrutiny because of his race. And if people want to be disgusted with current policies, they should be complaining about Congress rather than POTUS anyhow, since the legislative branch is responsible for the country's purse strings. I can't get the formatting to work so it's not confusing...

That's great that you're open minded enough to do that- I say that with all seriousness. Unfortunately, most people are so entrenched in their politics/religion/social stance that any push-back to their point makes them dig their heels in deeper to whatever mindset they have.

I think there are legitimate reasons to be disappointed with his presidency, but on top of all that, I agree that he faces added scrutiny and disrespect due to his race.  I think it is a small segment of the population (tea party) that does this, but unfortunately they are also the loudest.

Haha yeah, his grandma and apparently his father, which I didn't know. Anyways, she and an uncle of his made the doubt and thus people wanted to know his citizenship. Which I can completely understand. Kinda crappy that his family would do something like that. I do not believe for one second it had to do with race, although being the first black man in office.. of course you will be looked at with a microscope.. so would a woman.

Well, Donald Trump didn't help the situation any, and some newspaper latched onto his grandmother saying that she saw him being born in Kenya... whether that was a translation issue or she misspoke or the paper outright lied I'm not sure, but the accusations did start somewhere.

  • I am not going to argue politics on here, but I used to work in politics, so when people base their beliefs on "facts" that they really don't know, it drives me nuts. If you're going to have an opinion, at least understand the real facts behind it. Don't just spout off what you've heard on Fox News or somewhere else.

As for recycling, come on @jss1002 ! I totally miss single-sort recycling, but now I live outside of town limits and we have no recycling service. We have to haul our recycling to the recycling center ourselves. We still recycle everything we can. Think of your kids and your future grandchildren!
