In my experience, when people criticize others that use "government assistance" they are talking about social programs that they don't qualify for. By the way that isn't how the system works .... If you got pregnant within your year off you don't get to take another year off. you have to go back to work and work a certain number of hours before you can take another maternity leave.

Well, for one thing then your coworkers have to make up for the work you don't do for a year. In my profession I make up much of the work I don't do over my 6 week maternity leave b/c if I don't do it I am basically dumping all of that onto my partners to do for me. Not very fair. I guess it depends on what kind of job you have.

Here we get contractors to cover for us!

How could I have missed this!!! Ok here I go. It does not attract more illegal immigrants there is a lot of restrictions to it. And they do not go back to their countries why would they?? When their countries are all f'ed up. I have a few friends who the dream act just changed their life. I have cousins born in US soil who are just trash and do nothing with their lives and im sorry most low income young americans do the same thing. In here are those immigrants busting their ass trying to make their parents proud and they couldn't way because they did not have a green card and they never came here by choice. Their parents wanted a better life for them. I can personally say my friend is now a teacher thanks to the dream act and she can live her dream. I have another friend who will very soon be a police officer. The dream act is life changing.

That may be true, but it also shows them the other side to whatever we are debating. I know for a fact that my opinions have changed on subjects (maybe not initially) but after someone said something I researched it more and changed my own opinion. So it is not always a lost cause!

I hate when people say husband/wife when they're not married. I don't care if you've been together for a long time or are "practically" married. You're not married, don't use the terms!

I don't know who acts like its not because I'm pretty sure everyone in America whether white, black, purple or green is aware that racism is still a very serious issue.

This is based on experience. You base your opinions on the people that you know/ see. I teach in the middle of two major housing projects in my city and I see this all of the time. People who live in a three bedroom apartment and pay $60 a month for rent, get $800 a month for food stamps and $ 700 in SSI Medicaid for all 5 of their kids and continue to have children. Then their children have all of the name brand clothes and they are in the club every weekend and buying 40s and weed. Not saying that there aren't some people who use government assistance for it's a lot of people that make it a lifestyle.

I rarely feel strongly enough about a topic to have an UO about it.  I try to think of something and the best I can come up with is I hate hot sauce.  Others gets so fired up about some of these things that I feel like mine is super lame so I keep my mouth shut. 

BUT I love reading everyone else's! So entertaining!

Has any other president had to produce his damn birth certificate though to prove he is "American" enough to run for the office? He absolutely has faced added scrutiny because of his race.

And if people want to be disgusted with current policies, they should be complaining about Congress rather than POTUS anyhow, since the legislative branch is responsible for the country's purse strings.

While some of it has to do with his race, sure, a lot of it has to do with some things he has really no control over but he made it seem like he could control it while campaigning. I get that now days it is basically say anything to get votes.. but still. (This is concerning both sides) Like Kate said above, the POTUS really has no power over these things. I would go as far as to say he is basically the fall guy for congress nowadays. If he, or any president tried to take power, he would probably be impeached faster than you can say "change".

I would love women to have the option to take a year off for maternity leave.

I think racism exists in the US.
I think most of the people who dislike Obama do so because of his actions rather than skin color.
Oh and I never watched reality tv (except American Idol) until this year when I started watching my first season of the bachelor.
I also like big butts and I cannot lie.

That's great that you're open minded enough to do that- I say that with all seriousness. Unfortunately, most people are so entrenched in their politics/religion/social stance that any push-back to their point makes them dig their heels in deeper to whatever mindset they have.

I think there are legitimate reasons to be disappointed with his presidency, but on top of all that, I agree that he faces added scrutiny and disrespect due to his race.  I think it is a small segment of the population (tea party) that does this, but unfortunately they are also the loudest.

Haha yeah, his grandma and apparently his father, which I didn't know. Anyways, she and an uncle of his made the doubt and thus people wanted to know his citizenship. Which I can completely understand. Kinda crappy that his family would do something like that. I do not believe for one second it had to do with race, although being the first black man in office.. of course you will be looked at with a microscope.. so would a woman.

Well, Donald Trump didn't help the situation any, and some newspaper latched onto his grandmother saying that she saw him being born in Kenya... whether that was a translation issue or she misspoke or the paper outright lied I'm not sure, but the accusations did start somewhere.

I am not going to argue politics on here, but I used to work in politics, so when people base their beliefs on "facts" that they really don't know, it drives me nuts. If you're going to have an opinion, at least understand the real facts behind it. Don't just spout off what you've heard on Fox News or somewhere else.

As for recycling, come on @jss1002 ! I totally miss single-sort recycling, but now I live outside of town limits and we have no recycling service. We have to haul our recycling to the recycling center ourselves. We still recycle everything we can. Think of your kids and your future grandchildren!
