@msameera25 I couldn't disagree more. If someone said anything to my child, I would lose it. If I want to raise my child to be a rambunctious animal that knocks down store displays, that's my business.
@kate_c I don't know how many people I have un friended on facebook and a few IRL because of that.
I guess my UO is I LOVE the snow days with my LO. I only gets Saturdays and Sundays with her as it is and I'm usually doing laundry, cleaning, cooking etc so she never gets my undivided attention. I so enjoyed the last 2 days where I could lay on the floor and play with her all day
Reusable shopping bags?... No thanks. Give me my 4,000 plastic bags please.
Noooo! Think about the planet! They don't even offer plastic bags here on the west coast and you have to pay a dollar a bag for paper. The reusable ones are awesome and can hold so much. Way fewer trips into the house.
I live on the west coast too and they DO offer plastic bags and look at you funny when you ask for paper.( and I've never had to pay for paper)
Ditto. The Albertsons in my town tried banning all disposible bags, but that only lasted about 6 months until they brought them back.
I was about to say something like.. did they change something in the last 4 years because California offers plastic bags... well they are heavily recycled plastic bags and barely hold a box of cereal before ripping.

Okay, then I guess you don't live in progressive coastal California. Just an FYI that it is likely to become a statewide law in the very near future.
My family has a vacation home on the 'progressive California coast' actually and some stores will give you like 5 cents off your total per reusable bag if you bring them, but that's about as far as I've seen it go. As for the other parts of California, I have a hard time believing that the state will outlaw all plastic bags. Maybe certain counties will try, but I don't see it happening.
I think the year long maternity leave Canadians get is too long (maybe I'm hating just a little :P). I was talking with some friends the other day about the ideal maternity leave period for the modern working woman and we all agreed 3-6 months. IMO, 6 months is perfect - baby is *hopefully* STTN at that point, you have the opportunity to EBF (if you want to) without the added stress of pumping, give their immune system enough time to get stronger before daycare-itis.
But a year? You could very well get pregnant and have another baby in that time and then what? Another year off? I took 3 months off and had a hard enough time getting back into the swing of things, I can't imagine how it would be after a year.
Problem is, US is, I'm pretty sure, *the* only developed nation that provides ZERO paid maternity leave. I'd take that year in a heartbeat.
I can actually see Albany doing that no plastic thing... nowhere else.
Napa is about to pass the ban through the city council. Plastic will not be an option and paper will initially cost 5 cents a bag. So is Saint Helen.
Haha, well I can see why it worked in Calistoga though. St. Helena is small so I guess it can work. I would think the smaller towns going towards the coast will do better with this. Napa has grown a lot last time I was there, last year.. and it seems like it is a small Vallejo.. both in size and in the type of people that reside there now. (except the more north you go, towards Yountville, the more like old Napa it seemed). So I do not think it will go over well for a long period.
My UO (I might have said this in the past, but it is bugging me today): Not every child should be pushed to go to college. It is OK if you are not college bound. If we did a better job like other nations (think, Germany, Switzerland etc.) with programs that help students at a younger age figure out a likely path towards either higher education or a particular career, we wouldn't have so many students frustrated, taking the wrong classes, trying to get into college and failing out in a couple of years (or lowering the value of the degree).
We are over-saturated with kids going to college when a lot of them would be happier going into a particular trade. And that is OK. I don't get why it is so taboo to say that not every kid is bound for college. It is completely respectable to go into a trade and it makes so much more sense for *everyone* if children followed a path of their choosing instead of having it drilled into their heads from day one that they must go to college. Yes, I understand that this means some kids won't go who maybe should have because they didn't have the same opportunity. I understand people fear that the system would be abused and keep certain students down, but the system shouldn't be a gold star and medal for everyone. Sorry, it is the truth. We all have different TYPES and levels of intelligence. These systems have worked in other nations that are more successful with their education than us, and I wish we would follow suit. No child left behind can kiss my ass.
I use plastic bags like they are going out of style. Groceries, zip locks, etc. I reuse my plastic bags as trash bags and keep a bunch in LO's diaper bag to dispose of messy diapers when we're out and about, but I use and toss zip locks like crazy. Shrug.
I also (wait for it) don't recycle.
I hate the compact flourescent light bulbs and am super pissed that they are going to stop making "normal" light bulbs. I think the light quality on those compacts is shit, and if you break one, you leak MERCURY into your home. No thanks.
EDIT: I just read back up and realized that people who are unemployed don't actually get a refund I guess, so my whole response is kind of dumb. I just hate that some people REALLY take advantage of the system and it's on my dime. I think programs like WIC can be really beneficial, and I would never want a baby to go hungry because his mother can't afford to take care of him... but I also think that people need to be more responsible!
I don't understand why everyone always seems to focus on the "some" that take advantage. I'm not disagreeing that some people do, but no one ever seems to consider the large number of people who do not - the people who have worked and paid into these programs (and didn't have the luxury of having a job that they can't be laid off from) that are now benefiting.
Ugh. I can't. You're right... it's very luxurious being me.

Oh hey, my child is almost 10 months old and I am still pumping at work 2-3 times a day. Not everyone wants to stop at 6 months. I think that anyone should get up to a year of maternity leave. However, I don't necessarily think that anyone deserves to be paid a full salary for that entire time.
I have another one...I think if you recieved any type of goverment benefit through the year you shouldn't be entitiled to a tax refund.
I think this doesn't make sense at all. Tax refunds are not free money, they are "refunds".... in other words money due back to you. If you have earned it, you get it. And I would assume some people on government benefits aren't earning one.
True, but money is taken out of my paycheck every single month to support people who aren't working. And I know anything is possible, but I HIGHLY doubt that I will ever receive unemployment. (Teachers basically can't get fired unless they do something really heinous, in which case they won't be eligible. And also I am on a year-to-year contract, so I wouldn't get fired... I would just not get a new contract.) I guarantee you that the government is giving many people MUCH more money in financial assistance than they have overpaid on their taxes (aka what their refund would be). So I'm not sure that they're really entitled to that money. Maybe the government owed them money BEFORE... but then the government gave them a handout. Of my money, and everyone else who works. So perhaps their refund checks should just be added onto the refund checks of the rest of us who are actually working.
(Okay, I know that's not feasible in real life, and yada yada. But I do think it kind of sucks that I have to pay into unemployment my whole life, even if I never ever collect it a single time. Lame. What can I say, I'm a Republican. I work hard for my money.)

Only Republicans work hard for their money...
If you are going to have a problem with one socialist aspect of our democracy, you'll have to take issue with all of the others. I'm guessing you do like the following:
-Having your roads and bridges taken care of/built/maintained
-The police force
-The firefighters
-Postal service
-Student loans and grants
-Public library
-FBI
-Museums
-PUBLIC SCHOOLS
-Jail/prison system
-Vaccines
-FDA -State snow removal
-CDC
-FEMA
-Public street lighting
I could go on...
Just because you are republican doesn't mean you get to pick and choose which socialist services you care to pay for and which you do not. So yes, you have to pay for unemployment that you'll never use, but someone else is paying for the education of your child when they will remain childless their whole lives.
Also, @Knitfaced , I am not arguing the fact that people should start recycling and what not. I am just surprised about that ban. I really want to know how they plan to make it work in large cities.. I am talking Sacramento or bigger in size.

UO related to other UOs, I guess: When you choose not to recycle and or take as many measures as possible to create less of a negative environmental impact, you are making foolish and ignorant choices. Maybe you believe it'll never come back to harm you? What about your children, their children, and their children etc.
I can't fathom the blind ignorance or perhaps egoism of choosing to be vicious towards the environment for your own convenience.
And those of you who think it is some "conspiracy" and don't "buy into" the environmental hoopla, take some of your internet using time to do some actual research into the matter and educate yourself.

Nope. Because we don't buy or use enough recyclable stuff to warrant its own container (nor would we have space for it) and it's -25 degrees outside so I'll be damned if I'm going to walk outdoors to the garbage every time I use a can of soup. Also, my econ profs in college pounded into my head that it cost more money to recycle products than to create new ones. So I guess I pick economics over environment.
I'm also KIND of with you on the "I'd like to keep my hard-earned money, please" front, however I think it is important to understand that we probably don't fall into the tax bracket that is towing much of the line for other people... basically, the middle class gets fucked both ways no matter which party is in office. :-)
I think the new Paddington Bear Gap line is stupid. I love Gap Baby, Gap Kids, and Tallulah wears Gap all the time...but they missed the mark with me this go round. blah

It is actually very selfish of you not to recycle anything. It is basically saying "I am just thinking about myself and my lifetime!"
If more people put forth the effort to just do even a little bit, the world would be a lot better place.

you can keep it in a bag in your house or in the garage if you have one and when you do make the trip outside when you dump your garbage you can dump your recycling.
The reason why it costs a lot more money to recycle is because people aren't doing it. The more people do it, that is the point where it then becomes profitable.
Also, @Knitfaced , I am not arguing the fact that people should start recycling and what not. I am just surprised about that ban. I really want to know how they plan to make it work in large cities.. I am talking Sacramento or bigger in size.
It has been in effect in SF for a while with no problems and it started for the whole of LA county on January 1.
Good for them! It does show how long I have been out of the bay area. Last year when I was there I didn't go shopping (only in Sac and Fresno). So I didn't even know about this.
Mine: I think it's in really bad taste to bash/vent about your husband/SO to your friends/family. I find it disrespectful. I cringe whenever women bitch about their husbands, or talk about "training" them. I do not have a perfect husband by any means, but I make it a point to never do this.

You don't get junk mail? Or eat yogurt out of plastic yogurt cups? Or drink milk? Or use laundry detergent? You get the point... You can recycle an awful lot more than just soup cans.
And if I can make room for a paper Target bag to hold recycling in my tiny city house galley kitchen, I am confident you can find room in your suburban McMansion! I am by no means a super green person, but it's not like recycling the basics is difficult

This irritates me so much. Also the types that actively try and do something sneaky like get pregnant and get child support and other things. (there is an actual website that is solely for women to help each other do this)

Amen. I do not bash my H to my parents, his parents, my friends, his friends etc.
When we were dating he did some effed up stuff and I told my friends about it and when I wanted to get back together with him they just couldn't believe it and they hated him for the longest time. To be honest, I couldn't blame them because I aired our dirty laundry and they were just looking out for me. I learned my lesson and what happens in our marriage, stays in our marriage.
Speaking on financial assistance i'm sure I'll get flamed for this but here it goes; I don't agree with the Dream act (yes I voted). I feel that it in a way it attracts more illegal immigrants and the financial aid portion is unfair to the American children who have to pay the full amount for tuition. I feel like there should be a clause it the act that makes those who receive education out here stay out here and aid in our society instead of taking their degrees and what they've learned back to their home countries

I find this hard to believe too...We recycle almost everything. So much so that we have recycling service at my house...but not garbage service. We create so little garbage (pretty much just diapers, food waste, and our small bathroom garbages) that my husband just tosses it in his work dumpster whenever we need to.

Hmmmm, snarky! I don't recall saying that I work harder than people who have different political views than I do. I do work harder than people who don't work at all. But yes, I see your point. Still, I think each program is a separate entity and many need reform, not just the welfare system.

I love you today. I was going to respond to your other post about the social programs. In my experience, when people criticize others that use "government assistance" they are talking about social programs that they don't qualify for. Universal health care is socialism but hands off my Medicare. Food stamps are handouts but government subsidized student.loans? Yes please.
