While I think teachers are underpaid in some states, the content bitching (by some- not on here) gets annoying. Most people think they are underpaid and don't only have to work 185 days a year with a pension. My parents were both teachers so I do understand taking work home etc, but still you know that going into the field.
Seriously. I saw my family teaching (mom, stepfather, stepsister, uncle, and on and on). I chose not to teach for some of the things I saw and dealt with growing up. My current field has it's issues and I will occasionally vent about them, but I don't spend all my time online venting and complaining and acting like I have it worse than every other profession. One of my BFs is a teacher and I'd say every other status post on FB is a complaint about it. The remaining 50% of statuses seem to be complaints too... but I think I vent about my job maybe... 10% of the time or less? And I feel like there's a few professions you know the deal with salaries, etc going in very well- teaching being one of them. My profession is rumored to be high paying but that really isn't the case (you make average pay, not terrible, but not luxury living) unless you're a celebrity version (aka Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava, etc). And teachers that say they don't get vacations? You have the majority of 2-3 months off a year. Yes, you have to fill in with continuing education training, but many fields you have to do that anyway on top of your regular 40/52 and pay for it yourself and occasionally even use your PTO to go to it.
Yes! I am an architect as well and it drives me crazy when people assume that architecture is a high paying job! I do ok, but I do get annoyed with the engineers make 1.5xs what I do, had less school (and student debt), have less experience, and have less responsibility on projects...
Do TV/Movies that portray architects drive you batty too? We don't all live in glass boxes and draw by hand and just draw pretty pictures all day!

We might have had this one before. It's inspired by the Parenting UO. I think sex ed should start in Kindegarten. Not like the SEX and contraceptive portion but teaching kids about their bodies (separate boys and girls maybe) and good touch/bad touch.
Also, parents should not be able to have their kid opt out of sex ed in school.
It should be taught first and foremost at home but in the off chance it is not, it needs to be taught somewhere
Yes! It's especially important to use the proper terms when talking about body parts with kids!

+1 but substitute architect for lawyer. I HAVE NO MONEY. It's called student loans....
Seriously! Oh doctors make so much money... not when you go to a private medical school for 4 years that costs $50,000 a year and then do 3 years of residency where you get paid jack crap... Maybe some docs like Ortho or Plastics make good money, but not primary care docs!
I think it is interesting that before Rachel? from the biggest loser was judged by society as being too fat, and is now being judged for being too thin. Both ways are called unhealthy. It kind of feels like you can't win.

and I think the tax code should be reformed to increase the student loan interest deduction. $2500 in interest? that's nothing. this year between DH and I we paid close to $6000 in student loan interest.
+1 last year that $6K was my interest alone. Blarghety Blarghety Blargh. I think our tax stuff in the US is insane and confusing just to make sure the average citizen loses/misses things and pays too much. I spent SO much time trying to figure out how to fill out the tax forms adding A and then accounting for working in two different states and our raises (yay, we can pay the bills now!). I'm not saying I'm a genius but I'm not so stupid that I should be THAT confused updating my W-4s.

My UO - I don't watch Biggest Loser but I watched that clip this morning after all the brouhaha. I don't think she looks too thin. I think that just might be her body type. I think the manner of losing weight (rapidly) is really unhealthy and the odds are good that she or any of the other contestants will pack it back on, but I also don't think she looks as sickly as some people are saying.
I plan to actively discouraging DD from going to college without a career path (and away from being a lawyer) student loads are terrible. I don't want her studying basket-weaving at NYU wracking up 60k in debt a year.
Of course now that is all she will want to do because they are just the best at basket weaving.
Yeah... we plan to discuss with A that her choice of school should relate to her chosen profession- we went to a private undergrad that was top for financial aid and left with 0 in student loans. That lovely public grad school is where our HUGE chunk of student loans comes from. Thank you UB and your BS program requiring insane amounts of highly detailed models from expensive materials. (/rant) But seriously- you want to go into a field- make sure your choice of school relates to a realistic rate of return for your education costs my love.

Anyone with a high paying job and school debt can feel free to switch me lives!
jk Americans need to get that school expense shit under control.
If I had a high paying job I wouldn't care so much about my student loans. If I didn't have my student loans we'd actually be able to save some money. Also, I don't know where the "average" student has less than $20K in student loans. The only people I know who have professional degrees (aka Masters level, beyond the bachelors) and less than that are people whose parents paid for their education.

@RissNRuss - haha, yes! Instead I live in a 100+ year old house that is really just a giant project/money pit. I do only wear black and gray though, so I sadly fit that stereotype

Our "new" house is from 1920... we've replaced the stair to the basement, all the appliances (stove with drawers anyone?) and are slowly working our way from worst areas to acceptable areas (we moved in in October). It's a "four square" so very little style exterior, but interiors (that aren't heavily dated) are gorgeous!

I picked law school because of Law & Order, Ally McBeal and my college roommate. I wish I had talked to an actual lawyer first.
Whenever anyone I know reaches out to me about going to law school, I always tell them, unless you can go to a top 10 law school and end up with a 100K starting salary, or be able to pay for the tuition without a loan, going to law school isn't worth it unless your idea of success is getting paid a shitty salary out of school and spending a good chunk of it for student loans for the next 35 years. And if you are smart enough to go to law school, you are better off entering the corporate world right after college.
Example; my husband and I went to the same college. I went to law school right after, he got a job as an analyst at a company. 10 years later, even with my law degree, my husband, who has steadily climbed the ranks, still makes more than I do and he didn't have to spend over 100K in tuition.
