I am glad I am not the only one. I feel like I should enjoy these "extra" days together, but they make me want to rip my hair out and leave me inpatient.

Of course - this is probably in part because I am expected to work remote on these days (even though our office is closed) and in turn think my husband should be doing more of the heavy lifting persay, since he is not working.

Either way - I'm over it.

My UO I hate all trashy reality shows honestly I don't even watch that much tv. I have no idea what downtown abby is and I cant believe so many ladies here watch the bachelor or teen mom. Amazes me.

  • I think the year long maternity leave Canadians get is too long (maybe I'm hating just a little :P). I was talking with some friends the other day about the ideal maternity leave period for the modern working woman and we all agreed 3-6 months. IMO, 6 months is perfect - baby is *hopefully* STTN at that point, you have the opportunity to EBF (if you want to) without the added stress of pumping, give their immune system enough time to get stronger before daycare-itis.

But a year? You could very well get pregnant and have another baby in that time and then what? Another year off? I took 3 months off and had a hard enough time getting back into the swing of things, I can't imagine how it would be after a year.

I use reusable bags 90% of the time and I still have plenty of plastic bags for the bathroom trashcans and to crap up the the cabinet under the kitchen sink.

  • I think it is perfectly acceptable to discipline/scold other people's children in public if the parent isn't doing it. Yesterday I was in the grocery store and this little girl was knocking over a whole display on purpose her mom watched and did nothing so this lady walked over and told her to stop it an go to her mom. After the lady left the aisle the mom kept saying she couldn't believe the nerve of the woman.

Im sorry I know in a way you are right I have seen it happen. But I would never discipline a child that is not my own. Because if someone did that to my children I would go off in a heart beat.

Wow. I disagree---but, I wouldn't be either person in that situation. I wouldn't stand by and watch my child behave that way, but I also wouldn't discipline someone else's child. Not my place. If the child was doing something dangerous I would speak to the parent.
  • I have another one...I think if you recieved any type of goverment benefit through the year you shouldn't be entitiled to a tax refund.

Oh man!! I couldn't disagree more!! I love having my year off! You don't have to take the year off but you are entitled to it! I love having the opportunity to be at home with my daughter. I'm glad that 6 months seems like enough for you but I don't think you should get to decide what works for someone else! By the way that isn't how the system works .... If you got pregnant within your year off you don't get to take another year off. you have to go back to work and work a certain number of hours before you can take another maternity leave.
I didn't know that was how it worked, but I still think a year off is too long though. I do like the idea of splitting it with your spouse.

Yes!  Adding to this, I think that most reality TV is rotting our brains.  And it's not even real.  Have you seen family portraits of the duck dynasty guys?  Not one strand of facial hair in sight!  The Learning Channel isn't about learning anymore. When was the last time MTV or VH1 actually played music?  Oh, and if one million moms are all up in arms about "Good Luck Charlie," why don't they have anything to say about the Bachelor?

Give me PBS programming, the food network, and the National Geographic channel any day.

    *steps down from soap box*

Omg you are my tv twin hahaha. That is all I watch too (if I do watch it). I just found that too funny.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Blasphemy!

@kate_c: Confession - I almost googled POTUS. Like it took me that long to figure out what you meant. Probably all of that reality TV I've been watching that rotted my brain out.

Too long for what!? If you don't like the idea of taking off a year that's fine then you wouldn't have to... But how can you decide it's too long for everyone else?!
It's my opinion - I'm not deciding for anyone else. Last time I checked I didn't have that kind of power ;)

Noooo! Think about the planet! They don't even offer plastic bags here on the west coast and you have to pay a dollar a bag for paper. The reusable ones are awesome and can hold so much. Way fewer trips into the house.
I live on the west coast too and they DO offer plastic bags and look at you funny when you ask for paper.( and I've never had to pay for paper)

  • DS has a Facebook page, and it works really well. It's like a Fan page. That way, people who want to see a ton of pictures of him can, and people who don't won't be unfriending me on Facebook. The "likes" on his page are mostly family, then friends, then some of my students and coworkers. :)

As for Canadians' maternity leave, it's awesome, but it's not really even progressive anymore. It's just that the U.S. is behind the times. And a year might be too long for you personally, but it's not too long for lots of people. The fact that they have the right to a year is great! The fact that I could only use 30 sick days and then take up to 12 weeks (total) unpaid is crap.

I also use my reusable bags anytime I can, but sometimes I forget. I hate having a million plastic bags all over the place!

1 bag or 100 - it's always one trip into the house.
Bwahahahahhahaa.  This is so me.  I HATE taking multiple trips to the house, I'll load up both arms to the point of being practically handicapped in order to get it all in at once.  Ha.

Whatever your political beliefs, you should have some respect for the President by virtue of the office he holds. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that was the kid peeing - usually it's in a Ford or Chevy logo (classy in its own right), but this time it was on the word "Obama." Not ok. I don't care who you voted for, he holds the office of POTUS and deserves more respect than that.

Assuming the US never gets to the point of having a Hitler or a Stalin in office, I agree with you.

Oh hey, my child is almost 10 months old and I am still pumping at work 2-3 times a day. Not everyone wants to stop at 6 months. I think that anyone should get up to a year of maternity leave. However, I don't necessarily think that anyone deserves to be paid a full salary for that entire time.

I think this doesn't make sense at all. Tax refunds are not free money, they are "refunds".... in other words money due back to you. If you have earned it, you get it. And I would assume some people on government benefits aren't earning one.
True, but money is taken out of my paycheck every single month to support people who aren't working. And I know anything is possible, but I HIGHLY doubt that I will ever receive unemployment. (Teachers basically can't get fired unless they do something really heinous, in which case they won't be eligible. And also I am on a year-to-year contract, so I wouldn't get fired... I would just not get a new contract.)  I guarantee you that the government is giving many people MUCH more money in financial assistance than they have overpaid on their taxes (aka what their refund would be). So I'm not sure that they're really entitled to that money. Maybe the government owed them money BEFORE... but then the government gave them a handout. Of my money, and everyone else who works. So perhaps their refund checks should just be added onto the refund checks of the rest of us who are actually working.

(Okay, I know that's not feasible in real life, and yada yada. But I do think it kind of sucks that I have to pay into unemployment my whole life, even if I never ever collect it a single time. Lame. What can I say, I'm a Republican. I work hard for my money.)

EDIT: I just read back up and realized that people who are unemployed don't actually get a refund I guess, so my whole response is kind of dumb. I just hate that some people REALLY take advantage of the system and it's on my dime. I think programs like WIC can be really beneficial, and I would never want a baby to go hungry because his mother can't afford to take care of him... but I also think that people need to be more responsible!

It makes tons of sense to me, and tax refunds when you only work 5 hrs a year is free money. Plenty of people only work a week or two out of the year and collect refunds while I work all year long and pay them every year. If you recieve food stamps, rent assistance, daycare assistance or any type of assistance you shouldn't be getting back thousands of dollars in tax refunds or any dollars in refunds. Thanks to EIC credits, child credits and all these other low income credits the govt ends up paying people to continue being a bum.

Me too, but 6 months is the recommended minimum to EBF and a lot of women stop because they don't want to/can't pump at work. And some still BF past a year.

Okay, for me it is easier to carry four big bags over my shoulder than 20 little plastic bags that practically cut off my fingers. I guess we should just keep on polluting the planet and killing wildlife. So much more convenient.

I think you took my response as something it wasn't. What I mean is that it doesn't matter how many bags I have (paper, plastic, reusable) I consider it a failure to have to take more than one trip. I tore a tendon in my hand one time trying to carry too many groceries at once. I was too embarrassed to tell the doctor the truth so I told him it happened while carrying kettlebells. Unfortunately it still aches when the weather is cold.

For the record, I agree with you about the plastic bags.
