Is a glass of wine a day really enough to cause cirrhosis?? I always thought it was large amounts of alcohol that were hard on the organs. Wouldn't all of Europe have cirrhosis then?? My family is from Europe and even the alcoholics live past 80. Maybe our genes are just conditioned to break down alcohol efficiently.

Well to be fair that's true But here the standard size of a glass of wine is 100 mls which is actually very little. I doubt many people only pour 100 mls when they have a glass of wine.

Agree. Doesn't help that my mom is constantly trying to "convert" me.

Ok ill go! I think people who smoke weed/ do any drugs as adults are stupid and immature! Particularly those with children.

I disagree. If pot were legal, I think it would be a better alternative to alcohol or even certain medications (Xanax, etcetera). No chemicals, no addiction...but of course should be used in moderation & responsibly.
I guess my UO is pot should be legal.

    Edit: words are hard
I agree with Lokilahve...I believe getting shit faced drunk around your kids is worse then smoking a bit of weed.

I'm catholic but have been really turned off the church since all of the child abuse scandals here. Although I do really like the new pope. He seems cool. He even allowed mothers to breastfeed in the Sistine chapel during mass which up until now no pope has ever allowed! I agree religion pushers are the worst!

    Agreed...drives me bonkers!!!
  • I think using drugs is just riskier behaviour and I guess since having LO I would be nervous even having more than a small glass of wine in case something happened to LO and I had to bring him to the hospital or something. What kind of parent would i be if I turned up smashed or high? I'm sure child services would he called.

This is where the moderation concept comes into play.
One can have a glass of wine & not get hammered.
Or one could have a few draws from a joint and not get stoned to oblivion.
  • Personally I would rather be around a room full of weed smoking people, then a room full of people getting drunk...We went to see The Wall a few years ago. As soon as the house lights went down, the weed smoking started. It was the most mellow concert ever...The dude behind me though was drunk as a skunk, and managed to #1, almost fall out of the nosebleed section as he stumbled across the aisles, and #2, spilled beer on the floor, which dripped into my area, and all over my purse...I was pissed.

FL has just finally agreed to put medical weed on the ballot....been a long time coming

I don't like football. I've never watched a game all the way through and neither has H. I don't even know who is playing in the superbowl, or even when the superbowl is exactly (Sunday?). And FWIW I don't particularly enjoy watching any sport.

  • Damn it @truebeliever925 now I want a Weimaraner!!

My UO: I'm not a fan of sleeve tattoos on girls. And I've got tattoos so I'm not sure why.
  • @magpie 1986 I've read a bit about jahi mcmath. It's such a sad situation all around, but I totally agree with you. The family needs to let her go and have closure. Part if me wonders how the family will pay for all the expenses incurred since an insurance company surely won't cover someone with a death certificate.

Tangential, have any of you all been following the story in TX of a pg woman being kept alive against her wishes only bc she's pg? Interesting juxtaposition to the jahi mcmath situation.

  • @nnikki10 just pass off trigger & buckshot and then you can have your weimaraner ;)

AND! For the record... I think some girls look BA with sleeves. I actually have a chest piece myself. I don't think I'd consider a sleeve for myself, but some girls can pull it off. But on guys? Wayyy hotter.

  • @truebeliever925 yea I think dudes are super hot with sleeves. I can't put my finger on why I don't like chicks with sleeves bc I love tattoos it's weird. Maybe because I couldn't do it I'm subconsciously jealous;)

I couldn't give up the danes I just want to keep adding!!! I want all the dogs.

I just want clear labels of what I'm purchasing. If something is made w GMO ingredients, I want to easily identify that on the package.

And Monsanto sucks. You can't tell me they make decisions based on the best interests of those in poverty. Growing drought resistant crops in places that have no business being agricultural speaks to far wider reaching problems of global population pressures. I get that it's a nice story line for them and having food to eat is obviously critical, but GMO is not a long term viable solution.

Yes, I think she should have been taken off life support, too. That's what the family wanted and the only reason she was still on was because if a stupid hospital mandate. Once the baby was shown to have shortened limbs and hydrocephalus, that was kinda the last straw. I'm glad they had a judge who could respect the family's wishes.

  • @magpie 1986 I'm glad her wishes were finally honored as well. It's such an all-around horrible situation. Wishes are wishes. I get that we don't like to think about it and that the siuation is rare, but the likelihood of a positive outcome was basically nil.

Isn't it awesome being married to a british man?! They don't give a rats about football, basketball or nascar.  That's really hard to find here in Texas. Mine doesn't even care about soccer. However, you get him watching the sailing channel and it's near impossible to hold any conversation.

  • @lisarene77 I have this debate w MH all the time. We were both raised Catholic. I tend to think like you - that I can take what I want from organized religion and fit into my personal bent on spirituality, if you will. He disagrees w me and says he was taught (he went to catholic school, I went public) that's it's all or nothing - you either buy in or you're totally out.

It's always a point of contention when we talk about the role of organized religion in our kids' lives.

I think clear labels is definitely reasonable, people should definitely know what they are buying and putting in their bodies.  It is then that person's choice to consume to food. I guess I just don't understand opposition to growing drought resistant crops because those places have "no business being agricultural".  What is wrong with growing food in soil that was previously unable to be used for anything? Yes, starvation and poverty are symptoms of expanding population growth but this is essentially saying that if we didn't have as many people we would have more food for everyone.  It's true, but it is not the reality of the world we live in.  We DO have this many people and we should deal with the facts as they are not as we wish them to be.  To be honest, the actual motives of Monsanto (or any company) mean nothing to me if they are able to create a potential solution to a serious global issue-even if that solution is a short term one.

This is one isse that I completely see both sides. Personally, I don't want to eat gmos so I would like to see them labeled. But if we have the ability to feed mass quantities if people who would otherwise starve, I think that option should be explored and utilized to its fullest. Total double standard, I know.

It's actually legal in Colorado and Washington. So while my husband may be considered immature, stupid and irresponsible by some of you based on his engaging in an illegal activity, I guess if we move to one of those states, we're home free?
Its not really that difficult of a concept, I'm surprised you are having such a hard time with it.

I think this pot debate is stupid.  We've had it on this board, what, 25x already?

Face the facts.  It's illegal.  Which means you shouldn't do it.  I don't care that you say it's not addicting.  I don't care that you think it doesn't impair judgment.  I don't care.  When the cop pulls you over and you have weed on you, try explaining it to him.

It's the law.  So get over it.

Absolutely.  It's legal in other countries too.  Move there.  I just think it's silly to defend something that is in fact illegal.  Will the cop let you off the hook because you tell him smoking pot is legal in another state? I don't think so.

Using your phone while driving is illegal in California (among other states) so guess what I won't be doing while I'm there?

I've already said this on a pot debate, but my husband smokes pot. He has a joint most nights. That doesn't make him stupid and immature, unless you think it's stupid and immature to have a glass of wine each night. He's a responsible person and a wonderful father. His smoking pot doesn't change that in the least. You aren't automatically an idiot just b/c you use marijuana. Maybe that's my UO. There are many intelligent, successful and responsible people who smoke pot.
I didn't make any comment on how good your dh is as a father. However I stand by my opinion I think its stupid as an adult to be using any drugs. I do think its fine to have a glass of wine the odd night but if you have to have a glass of wine every night I would probably be inclined to say that that's not healthy either.

I would rather an adult do drugs than an adolescent.

I agree with @VG101808, "hating" religion is extreme. So @revez do you not have any sort of religious beliefs? I ask this honestly curious, not to sound like a bitch.
    As for me,
    image
I'm jumping in on this. Preface - I use the word "hate" too loosely. I'll admit that. I dislike is a better use of my wording, but hate sounds so much more dramatic.

I say I hate religion all the time. But then I turn around and say how much I love the fact people can believe in something so strongly and come together.

My "hate" stems from the fact it wasn't an OPTION to go to Vacation Bible School or Sunday School. I was forced to do things that I didn't understand or that I didn't care to understand. On the flip side, I was only forced to do these things while I was a cute little girl who could wear frilly outfits and sit beside my grandmother and look adorable.

I don't believe in God. I have beliefs that there is something greater out there, but I don't think it's a man watching over us. I also think that it's difficult for me to follow the bible when it was written by man and then preached to be followed to a T when there is no black and white (or some say there is). How can SO many pastors, ministers, preachers, etc. talk to a mass of people and say different variations? Some hate homosexuals, some are okay with homosexuals but they can't marry, others think homosexuals can marry. It doesn't make sense to me.

I love the fact that so many of you can have such a strong belief in something, I'm quite jealous. Maybe that's why I "hate" it. I'm jealous. We'll never know :) And I'm okay with that.

  • I'm also in the "I hate religion" camp. I can "love and praise" Jesus and not be apart of any particular religion. Religion makes Jesus look bad. Pretty sure he wasn't "banging" a particular religion anyway.
    Just saying.

  • Ok, this is a real UO IRL, but I'm not sure how the bumpies feel.

I think the whole controversy surrounding ScarJo's SodaStream ad has nothing to do with her saying it's better than "Coke or Pepsi" at the end.

I believe the real controversy is that Soda Stream has their factories in the West Bank. I don't believe there should be Israeli Commercial property on the West Bank. Having commercial property in an occupied territory is a war crime.

I don't think they wanted Superbowl watchers to learn about these things, much less think about these things--and that is why the ad got "banned".
