Q if you've given birth vag style

Does your/did your LO move around during labor? Not like switch positions but normal kicks and punches and stuff. I haven't read anything that says what to expect in this arena and I'm highly curious.

Thanks!

  • If she did, I was too focused on the nasty contractions to notice. They get pretty squished in the process, so if they're moving, it wouldn't be big jerky movements anyway.
  • Yes, they did.  I had the monitors connected around my belly the whole time until my son crowned and then they switched his to the node on his head.  :)

  • Yep, he still kicked and moved around, generally when the nurses were poking around.

I definitely felt him in between contractions. Think he didn't love all the squeezing.

Agree. I think it was the quotes "   " - made me pause a bit before like ..."the burn" when reading it, making it quite dramatic.

I dont remember my second moving much, but with my first I vividly remember feeling so much pressure when it was time to push and I could feel her body wiggling down right before she came out.

Eta, "the burn" ::::shudder:::: not looking forward to that again :(

Yes! That's why I remember it so well! My epidural had wore off by then so I could feel everything. It was the strangest thing, as much as I was trying to push her out, she was trying to escape too. I didn't feel as much with my second baby because my epidural was still in full effect.
  • What is "The Burn" Lol. FTM here, and I have never heard this term before.
  • I felt LO moving around during early labor. I don't remember feeling him moving around as much when the contractions were really intense. I was too busy trying to breath through the pain up until I got the urge to bear down and push. Then I could feel him coming!

  • "The burn" is usually called "the ring of fire" (now that's dramatic!), it's when the baby starts crowning.
  • Yea... I am officially traumatized lmao. You learn something new every day.

@Rosie137 "The Ring of Fire" freaks me out lol!
  • Yup, I felt my babies moving around during labor.
  • Johnny Cash playing the ring of fire wouldn't make me laugh either lmao.
  • My OB referred to it as the "ring of fire" when it happened, and even the epidural didn't mask it.  DH made the same Johnny Cash joke as PP, which didn't go over so well with me at the time.

If it makes you feel better, I got an epi with DS and never felt "the ring". There was a crazy feeling of pressure though.

  • OK another FTM officially freaked out by the "ring of fire" :( Does "the burn" go away shortly after or does it last for hours/days? Do I want to know?

In my experience it went soon after baby was out.
  • I'm a FTM too, but my friend said that she felt her LO moving around right to the end - she was a big, very active baby though. I wouldn't be surprised if their movements aren't as noticeable with all those squeezy contractions going on!

ps, total lols at "ring of fire"

I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to freak anyone out either.  I was able to feel when to push and pressure with my epi, but I just wasn't expecting the burning sensation at all.  It's only fair to warn others.  For me it was an intense burning sensation that only lasted as long as it took me to get her head and shoulders out.  It stops after that.

  • @BlueDot818 No ring of fire with epidurals during or after birth :).

I'm going to try to go med free this time around.  I'm not afraid of the labor pains because I was actually in transition with my second before the epi kicked in (super fast labor), but I am scared to death of the ring of fire!  Plus, my first two were born so fast that I had significant tearing.  The placenta delivery and stitching up were both easy peasy.  I'm not helping this med free thing am I?  I'll stop now.

From what I have been told, the ring of fire is short lived.  The euphoric feeling after birth will overcompensate for most or all pain.  Women keep going back and doing it over and over med free, so I can too right?
  • With my first I had an epi and felt nothing.  Also of course I was hooked up to a monitor to be sure baby was okay.

With the second, I had no epi (by choice) and don't remember feeling her moving around in there, but again never a concern as the monitor was hooked up and measuring her HB.

Andplusalso, the 'ring of fire' really is the ring of fire.  I had always heard that and when it happened with my second, I couldn't stop myself from saying "Holy shit, it really is the ring of fire!!".  It was pretty funny and thankfully doesn't last but a few seconds! aww..memories....kind of making me wonder why on earth I thought I wanted to go through that again!

  • No apologies needed! I want to know as much as I can. Knowing what to expect is comforting to me...even the freaky stuff.
  • Just to give people some hope, I went without an epi, and the "ring of fire" did not live up to its name for me. It was uncomfortable, but I felt like the contractions were worse than the actual birthing part. So really, it depends on the person. Maybe you'll be lucky and just have a "ring of unpleasant discomfort". :)
I also went med-free and never felt any ring o' fire. Pushing actually felt like a relief to some degree from the pain of contractions, so don't stress too much about it.

And, from what I've heard it's a very short lived thing - ring of fire, heads out, voila.

    imageimage
  • I don't remember feeling DS at all during labor and I also didn't even notice that I wasn't feeling him. I had an epi but they had to stop it at some point so I could feel to push. I definitely felt the ring of fire and even said something about it to DH while it was going on. It didn't last long. Just to add, because a pp mentioned it, my placenta delivery was super painful and lasted way longer than the ring of fire. I'm definitely not looking forward to that again!

  • My son definitely moved around. I knew when a contraction was coming before I felt it because he would start fighting it! He moved so much in fact that he flipped himself into a breech position, so before I could experience 'the burn' I experienced a c/s.
  • After reading about the "ring of fire" my vag just informed me it doesn't want to play anymore.

Mine has also withdrawn itself from the playing field...I can definitely feel panic starting to set in with 13 days to go and induction scheduled! Anyone know if induction makes ring of fire more painful? Seems like it "adds" to the pleasure of pretty much every other part of labour :(
  • I'm sorry I brought up the burn and then was busy with work. I missed all the talk (and fun GIFs) about it! It really hurt like hell but only for a few seconds. I was actually glad to feel something because the level of numb with my epi was freaky. I did not like that I couldn't move my legs or control anything below the waist. Is that weird that I wanted to feel the burn at that point??
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

I was induced, and like I said, the fire was pretty tame.

AKA "The ring of fire"  I believe it's when the baby's head is crowning and you start pushing.  At least that's my understanding.  From what I hear it's inescapable -- epidural or no epidural.  My husband suggested to the birthing class that we play "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash when that starts.  I did not laugh.

This is not true. I've had 3 vag deliveries with epi and hell no did I ever feel the dreaded ring of fire. (Confession: much of my reason for an epidural is my fear of the ring of fire pain!)

  • To answer the original question, it just depends! With my first, I didn't really notice her moving much. Last time though (and she was WAY more active in general), DD2 was definitely moving around during labor and delivery. We actually laughed as we watched her literally wiggling her way out!

*this was not true for you

Correct. I guess I meant "this is not true" in response to it being "inescapable-- epidural or no epidural." As pp and I have said, that isn't true. Some have apparently experienced it in varying degrees, or not at all, both with and without the epidural.
