A14 crib drama...how much are you spending?

Good lord, these ladies.  That said, my mom bought ours but I think it was maybe $200 at Target...certainly no more than $300.  Would you spend $1k on a crib?

  • Ours was a gift. I think it was $500-600.

Ours is $400 I believe. But the range seems to be $200 on the very low end to $1,500 on the high end. $1k doesn't seem ridiculous. Granted, it's not something I would spend that kind of money on, but people spend twice that on couches they replace after a few years so why not?
Edit: to add that it seems the drama stems more from the fact that she seemed to think people would feel sympathy for her for whatever reason.

  • What a spoiled brat. I can't imagine bawling to my parents and getting them to buy that expensive of a crib. My parents wanted to buy the crib for us but I didn't feel comfortable having them spend that kind of money.
  • I also bought an Ikea crib. Got a whole set for less than $200.

  • That's outrageous. I spent 250 on ours. I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a crib.

  • @yellowbird219 No, there are a couple we are looking at on Amazon. Haven't made a decision yet, though. Would like to go organic, so we are cutting costs on the crib.

  • We also bought a Jenny Lind crib for $170.

I understand having your heart set on something...but then it shouldn't be someone else's responsibility to buy it for you.

  • 0 this time, since we're re-using DDs crib, but ours was a gift when we were expecting DD and I think it was just at $200 incl. the mattress.

We were planning to buy one second hand for $50 or less, until MIL offered to buy it for us.

I think it's crazy how much people will spend on cribs. But I think that about a lot of things.

DD ended up co-sleeping anyways and only used her crib converted to a toddler bed when she was 18m, so, really, we didn't even need it in the end, lol

  • I'm not sure I'd spend that much even if money wasn't an issue, but to each their own. I do think a lot of that post was her ubgratefulness but it got me thinking.

  • I think people mistake buying status symbols with "offering my child the best." Cribs aren't very innovative. At best, they have a nice design aesthetic.

  • $150 Walmart special Graco Lauren and it included the mattress. We're reusing it this time around. On a side note I was at my local Burlington Factory/Baby Depot today and they had a ton of really nice cribs on clearance.

    :\"> Maybe...

We spent AU$2,000 on our suite: crib, mattress, tallboy, change table, change mat, change cover and tidy drawer. The crib is convertable up to toddler and a day bed.

The conversion rate would make it about $1400US.

We are both on great incomes and have been saving for this for a long time.  We were fortunate enough to be in the position of choosing based on what felt right to us at the time - I might have got carried away on the day, but I did get $500 off. I would be comfortable in spending less if circumstances required.

I don't find that crazy at all. For us, we got the convertible crib, so no having to buy a toddler bed or headboard. Also, the dresser is a nice solid dresser that will stay with DS until high school and then transition into the guest room, so I don't think spending a few hundred on each piece is at all overspending. We rarely buy furniture so buying something that is quality that will last for years and years to come is our way of saving money in the long run instead of replacing it with another $150 piece in five-ten years.

  • @yellowbird219 I did buy the mattress. I got the foam/spring one that was 59.99. It seems firm enough to me but I haven't really compared it to other mattresses.

  • I think her ungrateful bratty attitude is more of an issue. If I had the money and I fell in love with a $1,000 crib, then I would buy it. I would never expect someone else to buy it for me.

I don't have the money for $1,000 crib, a $300 crib is expensive for my budget. But everyone has different budgets/priorities.

  • We bought a really nice solid convertible crib for DD the first time around.  We spent around $500 if I remember correctly.

This time we got a Graco on clearance for $75 (reg $159) at Target with $20 in discounts and gift cards bringing it down to $55.  I think $1000 seems pretty over the top to expect someone else to buy for you..
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
  • $100 for two mini cribs on craigslist.

  • We will probably going with an ikea crib or the same crib DS has which was 120.00 from Target. I can't justify spending so much on something that will be get puke, pee and shit splattered.

That crib she wants doesn't even look cool!

  • We're also looking at the Graco Lauren crib.  My in-laws offered to pay for the crib, and none of us want to spend more than $200.

  • I'm frugal and look for "deal opportunities." I paid about $110 for this crib by using two different Kohls coupons. I couldn't fathom asking someone to spend 1k on a crib for us.

We would've ended up with an Ikea crib if my parents weren't giving us one. We don't have a lot for furniture, and we were ok with that, luckily we had a lot of people willing to give us furniture, we got a dresser, changing table, glider and crib for free. Guess what, they don't all match. I'm a FTM and the thought of it all "being perfect" is nice, but some of us can't afford "perfect", and an infant isn't going to care if everything matches or not.

I would love to be able to afford a bedroom set from Young America...crib alone would be around $850!  But, we'll be using DD's that is going on 8 years old.  It was a gift from my in-laws but I know it wasn't more than maybe $300 or so.  Never did we expect anyone to buy anything for us!  It was very generous and appreciated.

Frankly we could afford a $1k crib but I still wouldn't buy one. With utilitarian items luke a crib, after a certain point you're just paying for the name/marketing.

All I need is a safe place for the baby to sleep. I would also like it to not be hideous looking. I can get that for $150 at Ikea.

MIL is buying our crib. I've been looking, but plan to ask my SIL how much hers cost so I don't look like I'm going overboard. Most of the ones I've liked are like $200-350.

Sidebar: anyone have an opinion on crib/changing table combos? We're in a teeny 2 bedroom apt for another year or so to pay down debt, and space is a major issue. Would the combo be worth it or should I go for separate?

    Edit: words are hard.

We were going to do the crib/changing table combo due to a lack of space, but after checking out the dimensions of those suckers we were hard pressed to find one that would fit the length of the wall we needed it to go on! They're great and the idea in theory is wonderful - they are just a lot bigger than we expected. You can get a regular crib and dresser/changing table and be okay.

  • If I had endless funds, I found a crib at Pottery Barn that I love. It's 900. I just couldn't justify spending that on a crib. We have a Jenny Lind crib picked out. It is 170.

Yes, this!  We had a changing table for DS.  It was upstairs in his room, but we spend most of our time downstairs in the family are.  Turns out we didn't need it at all and I'm getting rid of it before this baby comes to make space.  It's pretty easy to lay down a mat, towel, etc and change baby on the floor, your bed, etc.  Something to think about if you are tight on space, for sure.

  • Our crib and changing table/dresser are hand-me-downs from family. (Still new enough to be within all the safety regulations, no recalls, etc. We checked.) It's a very nice set and originally cost more than we would have spent and we're thankful to have them. Free FTW!

  • We bought a $500 convertible crib for DS and I totally regret spending that much.  We had the money to do it, but it just seems unnecessary now.  Now that we've made him a "big boy" room, I don't love the style of the crib for headboard/footboard and he chewed on the wood (I covered it after I saw teeth marks) and the snaps on DH and my pants have kind of scratched it too (from leaning over to get him). We ended up buying him a twin bed and will leave this crib as is for the new baby and then probably sell it when we're finished.

  • I spent about $580 on my on sale at Land of Nod. It was high quality and made in America, which we felt was important. We are only planning on using it for 3-5 babies so we didn't mind investing in a crib.

  • This girl is a huge brat. If you don't want something offered to you, then politely decline and spend your own money on what you want. It's not that difficult.

That said, some of the ladies on the Bump can be so judgey when it comes to how others spend their money. It's not yours, so why do you give a F? People are free to spend $10 on a crib or $5,000. It affects your life in no way. If I wanted a thousand dollar crib, that would be my business and mine alone, and I would buy it. I only spent about $140 for a Jenny Lind crib, so the crib wasn't my big ticket item, but I don't care how others spend the money they have. We don't all have the same budgets.

My mom bought our crib and changing table from a garage sale *gasp*!  And she wouldn't say how much she spent... That's a my Mom thing...
