Please excuse my use of the following words for a moment, as I'm using them in context only.
The word 'retarded' is in the same class that 'nigger' and 'faggot' are in. There's no place for them anywhere but history, where I thought they were long left behind. Inexcusable. Disgusting. Immature. Not welcome here.
It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
Cunt and bitch aren't degrading words describing a physical or mental handicap.
Totally not the same IMO. I stand behind my gif.
There are many other acceptable terms to describe the different way you walk, the "R" word doesn't even come to mind to me.
I see the difference as this: people make the choice to act like a bitch or a cunt. R word, F word and N word attack parts of a person beyond their control.
I completely agree. We should all know by now that that word is highly offensive and should no longer be used. It's crazy to me that someone would toss that around so casually.
@Junebug060609- We are lucky and have a great social skills mentoring program at our site. We have general education students who are teacher recommended who are paired up with each student with autism. They are my eyes and ears on campus and I can't tell you how many times I have wanted to hug them for how fiercely they stand up for my students. Just know, there will always be people like this to combat the ignorant ones.
I have a feeling @kellystef was maybe trying to agree with @Carpenter627 comment and didn't use quotes? But she didn't love the comment, so I don't know. I'm confused...

Wow! That word is so far from my vocabulary it took awhile to even figure out what you were referring to. She should be ashamed of herself regardless of the content or how she meant it.

I hope not. I do not agree with @kellystef. The "r" word absolutely is offensive. @dutchess546 has apologized and I'm guessing she has learned a valuable lesson. Nothing in what I have said condones the use of any derogatory terms. Just saying.
I hear you!! For sure, and I do agree with your statement. Using the 'r' word ESPECIALLY in the manner that the last thread ended on is so unforgivable and beyond offensive. But I also found Cunt offensive, just because I hate that word so so so much, but not on the same level as 'r'.
I wouldn't want Kelly agreeing with anything I said in any topic at this point, but it's the only thing that makes sense that she would say "exactly" to, you know?

This is a rare instance where I actually hope that poster doesn't come back to explain herself. Just GTFO and stay out. That kind of conribution is not needed or welcome here.
@Mamallama14 Thanks for clearing up the "other" f word (my mind was like "...other fuck?" ), but what on earth is the h word? I feel like a sheltered middle schooler, but I can't come up with anything.

Synonym for the F word... H word = homo. Equally as offensive and disgusting
I didn't see the original post but I can not stand anyone using the r word! I have called my husbands co workers out on using it in front of me, many times. He works in construction and both the men and women have used it in a social setting. Yes I am that person who will stop a conversation in front of a group of people to correct the person who uses the r word. I don't care what context they are using it, there is no place for it! It's the most disgusting word along with WB, N, and F words. I'm pissed just writing this, I hope this subject never comes up again!
I've never really said it growing up(not saying it has never come out of my mouth) but not in an offensive meaning way. However, growing up there are things you learn and that was just one of them. Anyways, I have a really good friend that we go ride horses with and his 16 yr old brother has Down syndrome. He is the sweetest kid. One day a girlfriend was with us and she said it all day long( talking about herself and not meaning it bad at all. Like "I am such a r word I can't believe I did that"). Finally I had to pull her aside and tell her that it as not ok. She didn't even know that what she was saying was wrong. I had apologized to my friend for it and he said that it gets said so much that he usually just blocks it out but it still made me feel like a shitty person and that she didn't know better! And she is 30!!!
I teach at a junior high that is connected to a high school. My first year teaching, I was working in my classroom after school. It was raining outside so the high school track coach at the time had the boys team running up and down my hallway. They were doing these weird warm up drills that you have to be fairly coordinated/have some rhythm to do. All of a sudden I heard the coach- THE COACH!- tell them they all looked (excuse me) retarded. I absolutely could not believe it. I froze in my classroom and thought, did I hear him right? I told some of my friends about it, and I would say that about half of them thought it was no big deal, and the rest thought he shouldn't have said it. My mom was a special education teacher so maybe I was just more aware? Idk. I'm not saying that I've never messed up or said something I maybe shouldn't, but I would never be so careless in front of students! I think it's all about recognizing your audience.
Students, especially high school students are tough.
I can't tell you how many times a day I hear the "n" word word. And it's always coming out of the mouths of black and hispanic students.
The first time I ever heard it used was by a girl whose locker was right outside of my classroom and I flipped out. She could not, for the life of her, understand why I was so mad. They (she was there with friends) said it's just not a big deal to them - that they use it all the time. Just like I'll say "hey girl" to one of my friends, they say "hey nigga" to one of theirs (this is how they explained it to me). Not to say that makes it okay, but I think now I'm just desensitized to that one.
I'm with everyone else though - completely inappropriate to use the word "retard" here or anywhere else, and this is another one I'm always talking to my [high school] kids about. Unfortunately, kids don't think. Adults, on the other hand, SHOULD know better. Last time a kid used in my class used that word, this is what happened:
Me: Why would you say that?
Kid: Idk (typical answer)
Me: What if another person in this room has a family member or friend who has mental disabilities? How do you think they might feel hearing you use that word to make fun of someone?
Kid: Blank stare (also typical)
Quiet, shy girl raises hand. Figuring this kid "forgot how to speak" I call on her.
Girl turns to boy and says: My brother is mentally retarded, and he's the sweetest kid you'll ever meet. And even though he's "retarded" (she made quotes with her fingers), he's not stupid.
I had no idea that she had a brother with disabilities. The kid looked horrified and didn't speak at all in class for a long time. But I think she put it really well - retarded does not mean stupid.

Did that poster go away btw?
This makes me really sad. The N word is used so much now in the mainstream that people feel that it's okay and not offensive in any way to say it. Hell, even Madonna referred to her son as the N word on Instagram and even though I'm a huge fan of hers, I can't just chock it up as no big deal and look the other way. As time goes on it's easy for people to forget the true meaning of the word and it's origins. Black people have come to think of taking the word back and I can't understand that mentality. For you, @Mimaloo, to hear that word so much that you're now desensitized to it just shows how ignorant the younger generations are and it's up to their parents to enlighten them that that word should not be used in regular conversation as if it's okay. I'll be the mother of a black boy and he'll for sure be hearing plenty of conversations about this from mommy and daddy as I'm sure he'll hear this word plenty during his lifetime. I weep for the youth.
I think most educated, professional adults know that the n word and the r word (outside of being used in a medical context) are not appropriate. I don't think we can assume the younger generation doesn't get it and never will based on what high school kids do. I did a ton of stupid things in high school and thought a ton of stupid crap. Their brain is not even fully developed and won't be until they are about 25. They are still children walking around in adult bodies. Yet, somewhere between adolescence and adulthood, I got it...I think most will, too, with people like pp helping and guiding them.
I actually think sometimes when someone does something mindlessly (like the poster using the r word) it is better to explain to them thoughtfully how what they said is insensitive which a lot of people did on this board.

I'm glad the post got taken down before I was able to read the ignorance. I have gotten into severe arguments with many people (even random strangers) over using the "r", "f", "h" and "n" words as well as people who use "gay" as a derogatory slang word.
There are a plethora of great adjectives out there to describe things and some very creative insults to call people that don't involve bringing down an entire subsection of individuals who have no say in how they are.
My mom works at my former high school with Title 1 students who have developmental and learning disabilities. We were taught to respect people from all walks of life, and using words like those hurts others and promotes an ignorant and bigoted way of thinking that is not okay in this day and age.
There is absolutely no excuse for using that kind of language out of proper context and anyone who does so needs a firm reality check and lesson in compassion.
