I think we can all agree that using certain language is wrong

I'm not talking about words like my favs "Fuck" and so on.  I can't believe that there is a poster on here that would casually throw out the r word.  Yes this warrants its own post.  I don't want to see that crap on here.  I'm not going to be nice if I see it.  Be warned, you use language like that and you will be flamed.

  • Whoa. You're kidding? You've got to be. I refuse to believe there is someone here that doesn't already know better.

Wish I was, but apparently pelvic pain warrants offending a whole bunch of people because there is no other way to describe how one walks while pregnant.

  • There is never an excuse to say certain things. That's one of them.

  • YES!!!!!! We all know better at this point than to ever use that word.

  • Yes let's all use such language, so our children can grow up using the same language! Continue the cycle of ignorance, it'll be great.

I wish I could do the .gif thing. Boo.

I just don't get how this person, that is going to be a mother, grew up with no one telling them it's unacceptable.

When you're 7 and you don't really comprehend how offensive the word really is, I get it, but when you are old enough to have a child...there is no excuse.

  • Yeah..my 8 year old knows not to use that word. Ever. She has been around special needs kids most of her life because of me and knows that it is offensive to call them names. The only name she changed was autism to awesomism...and that's not offensive at all.
Well we all know your 8 year old is awesome! Hopefully she can teach others around her. I was hardly aware of socially acceptable terms when I was 8 lol. I hope I can raise my kid like yours!

  • I was wondering what the R word was, but I figured it out. More than anything, it's inaccurate to describe any condition! We should all know better and be sensitive to others."There, but for the grace of God, go I."
  • Can we flag it as offensive??

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • What an asshat, using the r word as well as talking smack on someone's sexuality are the big no-nos in my eyes. As far as the f-bomb, well that's a daily occurrence for me (but I don't in front of other kids).
  • That's really sad. Unfortunately, I know people that still use the word and it just makes me sad every time they do. I correct them and tell them I, along with the rest of the world, find it terribly offensive...but some people just don't get it. I don't understand that at all. :(
  • Agreed. Not ok, she should know better.

  • I just can't believe someone would still use that word for anything.. I remember my brothers doctors using it as a medical term in the 70's but now isn't even used for that since there are better ways to describe certain conditions.
It's hurtful and just plan wrong

  • I used to use that word in middle school. Until one day I said it and later a friend pulled me aside and said "_____'s brother has Down Syndrome. FYI." While I can't say it never slipped out again, the amount of shame I felt was enough to make me consciously remove it from my vocabulary forever. I cannot believe the sayer of the word has by now never known anyone who had a disability or was close to someone with a disability? Maybe this will be her moment?

  • I fucking hate the "r" word. It makes me cringe and should be snuffed out of everyone's vocab. Get a brain, people.
  • Wow.

    Just wow.

I remember learning that lesson in 4th grade. My best friend's little sister has Downs. I remember her getting so upset about people throwing around that word - and I remember being effing NINE and having the lightbulb turn on.

The fact that an adult has escaped that "ah ha" moment is pathetic.

  • I had to go look up the post because I had no idea what the r word was. No one in my family or friends ever uses it so when i saw r word, nothing came to mind. I think because my mom taught children with special needs for 35 years, it was never an acceptable word in my home. I have seen it on FB on occassion and every time I see it, I cringe.

  • The R and F (the other one) words are the most vile words in our language IMO. Horrible.

  • My 8th grade students know that there are three words that will guarantee them detention and make it very hard to earn your way off of my shit list:  The R-word, the H-word and the F-word (synonymous with the H-word... think homophobia).

Basically any other thing they can do that is punishment-worthy I can try to rationalize where they're coming from... but those words are inexcusable and they've been taught a zero tolerance policy on them since they were in Pre-K.

  • Cunt and bitch aren't degrading words describing a physical or mental handicap.

Totally not the same IMO. I stand behind my gif.

There are many other acceptable terms to describe the different way you walk, the "R" word doesn't even come to mind to me.

  • There are grown-ass, "professional" adults at my workplace who have used this word. I consider it to be just as bad as the "N" word or any other outdated, derogatory term. I can't even believe people would stoop to use it on a pregnancy/mothering board (let alone anywhere, ever)!

  • I don't even think I have ever heard my 2nd graders use the r word!  Wow!  Grow up!

  • I didn't see the post that this is referring too, but I canNOT stand that word. I have family members that are disabled and before I became a SAHM, I was a Residential Service Director at a facility for mentally disabled adults. It is sad that people like to just throw out that word to use as an insult.
