My 2 cents - you won't use the bumpers, you won't use the quilt, the dust ruffle will get used up until the time you need to wash it and you won't bother to ever put it back on again because it's a pain. Buy some cute printed sheets

My mom is making a quilt. This is the backing, and the front will be the aqua color with various sea creatures in blues, greens, and orange. We got blue and green sheets to match, and my mom is also making valences out of the whale fabric! Sorry the pic is a little dark.
I had an imposible time finding neutral, plain bedding to go with our yellow, grey & white nursery so I have to confess that I copied these from a much more creative bumpie's reg.. Thanks @Jschwind22!!
This is what I got. I like that I could buy each piece seperately, so I just got a bed skirt, changing pad cover, curtains, some basket liners, and sheets.
I skipped the bumper, and I might get the quilt later to put over the back of a wooden rocking chair and use for tummy time. I will probably wait until he is born so I can have his name embroidered on the quilt.
I might eventually end up going back for more baskets/liners, and the thing that hangs over the edge of the changing table for organization. But for right now, those are on my registry and I'll wait to see if I really need them.
I got this jungle set from pottery barn and had his name embroidered on the quilt. I know we won't use it much, but u think it is something cool to have his whole life. I also didn't get a bumper
Like Cbrust I have the same sheet except with blue and the bed skirt is white with grey polka dots. Will be buying more grey fitted sheets from target in various patterns (dot, elephant)
I'm just buying velvet like sheets, or going to have them custom made locally (cheaper than Etsy). When we move into our house within this next year we will be getting a crib and bedding and all the decor!

I agree with the quilt, I know a lot of people who kept for the dust ruffle and the bumper the whole time they had the crib.
Of course they waited to put the bumper up for a few months.
I am going to use under the crib for storage, so I will be using the dust ruffle to cover up all my mismatched boxes :-\"
I second @lica001's suggestion about foregoing the expensive quilt for now. DS had some beautiful quilts made for him by friends and family, and we still haven't used any of them. I assume we will once he moves into a toddler or full size bed, but by then you might want a different bedding set altogether. Just something to keep in mind.

It's really personal preference... We used EVERY part of our crib set for DS. Like you said, we waited a few months for bumpers, but it definitely all got used. And after we washed the dust ruffle, it did go back on. People are different We'll be buying the entire set again, and using it. Here it is:
I am planning on getting just plain white sheets, no bumpers, dust ruffle, quilt or matching curtains. I don't really like anything too fussy and I'm way too lazy to keep putting a dust riffle back on after washing it. Also, I thought the AAP listed bumpers as a SIDs risk?
I plan to get the everything even though we won't use the bumper once he starts sleeping in there. In my experience, the quilts have gotten use as they have gotten older and have a sentimental value. I remember using the quilt for years as an extra blanket and during car trips. For that reason, I'll get one even.
I don't feel like linking everything I've used for ideas, but we are doing gray, orange, and aqua as the color scheme. I bought a couple of fitted crib sheets from Target - one is gray/white chevron print, one is gray with white elephants. My mom is making the dust ruffle, changing pad, curtains, etc.
I think we are going with this one for our little girl with a "You Are My Sunshine" theme. I have some whimsical yellow/white frames and a chandelier to go with it. I wanted something that would be easy to transition into toddler age.

Not all true! I have 4 kids and have used the bumpers with all of them, use the quilt when they are older and its colder out. and the dust ruffle until the bed got dropped
I love looking at everyone's choices! As for me, I've decided to stick with the "get a few cute fitted sheets" idea for now. I had my heart set on the Skip Hop Giraffe Safari set, but I figure for the first few months baby will be swaddled or in sleep sacks w/ no bumpers or other stuff allowed anyways. But here's my theoretical choice!
We definitely use the quilt now that DS1 is older. It's his heavy blanket in the toddler bed. I turned the bumper into storage boxes and pillows to have more matching accessories in the room. . Waste not, want not, right?

No bumpers for us. And we are choosing another sheet that is primarily yellow or yellow/grey so our nursery will be in lavender, yellow, and grey.

DD also has this quilt, but she's still too young to use it. Don't buy a quilt.
