Kacie- I agree appearance shouldn't be a deciding factor but it is and I believe it is naive to think it is not in the majority of cases. When you have two equally qualified candidates and one is well dressed/conservative in appearance and the other is tatted up, guages, crazy hair, etc... then I think we know who will be offered the job in MOST situations. (by the way I love tatts i sport a few myself)
Well I'll 100% disagree with anyone that says visible piercings and tattoos are bad for (any) work environments. It's extremely judgmental.
Gauges in your ears? totally fine. Bar through your nose? Doesn't make you less capable of your job. If my physical appearance offends you then I should have the right to discriminate against all those who *look* morbidly obese.
I'm not saying that the edge cases are always acceptable or correct. I'm saying that seeing a gauged ear or neck tattoo should not be a deciding factor on that persons skill level for ANY occupation.
I think people who go to party stores and buy all the matching crap to go with their party theme are crazy and unoriginal. That junk is expensive, and it all just gets thrown away! Plus, I think party tables look awful when every plate, cup, napkin, tablecloth & centerpiece is covered with pictures of whatever theme is being done.
Also? I hate goody bags that are full of useless, crappy toys. If people would put just a little bit of time into their planning, they could come up with some great favors that probably cost less and are actually put to use! I'd rather my kid come home with a decorated cookie than a bag o' crap that I'm just going to throw away.
I totally agreed with both of these points until I made the mistake of taking my daughter with me to Party City when I was buying paper plates for her Minnie birthday party. She kept seeing other Minnie stuff... Minnie cups, Minnie napkins, Minnie balloons, etc.... and every time her face would light up. And so we bought all of it because we are suckers.
I agree with the party favor crap. I don't like party favors in general, and I hate how they're expected.
@kacie, you are technically right that it doesn't determine an individual's ability to do their job. However, I feel that it's naive to think that in a conservative, professional workplace, it won't affect their ability to get a job and/or progress up the ranks. Especially in a competitive environment where there are multiple qualified candidates. It's absolutely judgemental and superficial, but unfortunately, it's the way it is. We had one guy in my old bank that had a tatoo on his upper arm that ever so slightly showed under a short sleeved golf shirt (which is kind of the standard wear for casual Friday for men). They told him he had to wear a long sleeved shirt because no one would care to see his body art at work!
Doing jury trials, it's super important that you present an image that "appeals" to the judge and jury. That means it would be very detrimental to someone's career to look extreme in any manner. We were actually lectured in law school that women should wear skirt suits and hose or they may offend someone. I don't take it that far, but for big trials there is tons of thought that goes into every item of clothing, including the color of a tie. When you have millions of dollars on the line, you conform your look for it!
My UO for the day: I think almost all diaper bags are ugly and a huge unnecessary expense. I'm not big on purses either so I just don't get it.. plus my dh is going to probably be the daytime care giver so I prefer plain/black bag to big floral, colorful, pastel, lime green (yuck!), etc...
I'm with you on the diaper bag/purse issue. I carry a purse because I need a place to put my glasses and wallet. I see no need to spend tons of money on a fancy purse when the $30 one from Target will do the same job. My husband is also going to be the primary care giver too, so we're getting a grey and black diaper backpack. We also got the khaki colored Ergo.
I know people judge. All the time. I'm just saying that this line of thought that because it happens doesn't mean its ok or that it's something to shrug off.
otherwise Abercrombie and Fitch is a model of suitable behavior for hiring practices.
I understand the minute details of dressing for a role. I consider Law to be an edge case - because you're paid... to judge... and defend... and all that. So neutrality speaks volumes.
But for the normal business environment (probably somewhere that a casual friday exists) making someone cover a tattoo because someone else doesn't like seeing it. or it distracts them. or they aren't being judged off their performance for a raise... is a démodé* way of seeing the world.
So in the case where I'm comparing two of the same skill sets for a job or a promotion - the right thing to do IMO is to give it the one who's been there longer (turned their resume in first). There is so much more you can analyze about a person than you can even begin to use their appearance as a factor.
*side note: this pun is hilarious and intentional.
Lol, my husband had a Mohawk for our wedding. It was ridiculous, but totally him and our wedding was in no way "traditional", so I loved it My UO: I have a pitbull cross. My whole life I have been petrified of them because of the way the media portrays them. But, my Stan is the most loving, gentle, loyal dog I have EVER met. People who hate dogs love him. I can't brag enough about him. Anyways. People keep saying "oh you are going to have to kept him well away from the baby" and "how will you ever trust your dog around the kid" etc... I have even had people tell us we will have to get rid of him before baby comes. These are obviously people who have never met him! (My family lives across the world). For starters, I would trust my pitbull YEARS before I would trust most chihuahuas or little dogs around a baby. He is so gentle! BUT more importantly - I'm not stupid. I will NEVER leave a dog and baby unattended, no matter how much I trust him or what kind of dog it is. But they hear me say that and presume "I can't leave them alone together" because of his breed. People need to get the fuck off their high horse, as breed discrimination is RACISM is my dog-loving eyes
I have to agree with you... We have a rotweiler/bulldog mix & a chihuha/rat terrior (sp?) and before we had DS people would say all the time how worried they were about our dogs... The rot is the biggest most loving baby every and although they are both awesome with our DS, I would trust my rot with him way more then the chi because she can be snippy sometimes.. Our Rot is so good with him she lets him ride her and lay on her & although I know nothing is impossible, I could never see either of them hurting DS1 or DS2 on the way..
I grew up outside of town where everyone has their own well for water. Some city water tastes absolutely terrible!! This is why I go for bottled water when I'm not at home...
Same here I have a well with a water system hooked up and can't stand the taste of other peoples water! I usually get an eye roll from people when I say this!

I've found that terriors are one of the worst breeds with kids. We have a terrior mix and my parents have a terrior mix, and they're both snappy. I know neither would ever actually hurt our daughter, but they both snap at her when she gets too close for their liking. One of Caroline's favorite phrases right now is that "Cookie (our terrior) is grumpy."

If i had it my way we would be piercing her ears young around 1 or 2. But my husband flat out refuses right now.
My mom left it up to me and i was to terrified to do it so i waited until i was 15 and always regretted it because i wanted yo wear the cute earrings like everyone else. Thats my real reason for wanting to do her ears so young. Vain i know!! =]
My UO is that i know showers are a gift but i wish they were having food i want to eat. They are serving sandwhiches...why can't it be hashbrowns and hamburger helper (thats all i crave these days!!) its silly but at least i get cake!
I agree! I had my ears pierced when I was 7 and I was so scared. I remember my mom saying she wished she had just pierced them as a baby.
I hate watching movies. Every time someone wants to, I just think about how I'm going to be bored and anxious for the next 2 hours. Theaters and 3D movies are even worse.
@laura8388, I could be making this up but I thought I remembered reading an article that stated that a Pit Bull's original 'job' was a therapy dog because they are incredibly tolerant and patient. Also the list of dogs that tend to attack or bite the most does not even include pitbull's in the top whatever. It does however include many smaller breeds like a chihauha. I think it is totally dependent upon the particular dog! I have a chow-chow lab mix. chow's are not traditionally friendly, family dogs and people were shocked that we would consider adopting her when we planned to have a family...they are up on the list of those not allowed in many kennels in my area (along with pitbulls). She is the most patient, tolerant sweet dog I have ever seen.
I posted earlier this week about my neighbors pit bull that got out. That is the sweetest dog ever. So much more calm than either of my two rescues. My next rescue will absolutely be a pit mix or full bred if need be. I read they were called "nanny dogs" because they are so calm and loyal to kids. But yes, I have the same mentality, they are still dogs at the end of the day, and I wouldn't be leaving my baby with a dog unattended. But there are also a lot of PEOPLE I wouldn't leave my child with unattended
Piercing Ears...My guy is Peruvian it is a very large part of their culture, if he wanted to do it I would understand, just like I have learned to cook his dishes and visited his country. My culture has a lot to do with Neiman Marcus, haha, just kidding, not really but she will do things that I have grown up with. (i.e. the easter bunny, he had no clue the first year I made him a basket why he was getting it, haha)
Bottled Water....it's all I will drink. I don't mind if I know it's purified but I can't stand the taste of tap. I also can't stand ozarka, so I am even picky with the bottled ones.
UO-You have to buy your shower hostesses gifts, I think it's highly gauche not to! They spend a lot of time and money to provide you this great party, You can afford a way to say thank you or maybe you shouldn't have had the shower in the first place...
@Kacie I'm curious how far you take the standard of 'appearance doesn'matter'? Would you disregard the appearance of an employee who doesn't meet basic hygiene norms? What about one who dresses in an extremely sexually provocative manner?
I agree that the ideal would be a world that we aren't judged on our appearance at all, but surely there are social norms that are necessary in a business setting so as to not distract from the employees purpose?
I'm with the bottled water only group.. I would have to be super thirsty and say a quick prayer before drinking tap water. Unless it is filtered. I am even snobby about what brand of bottled water I will drink (ice mountain is my preference). I use a big bottle and pour the water from gallons into my bottle to prevent throwing tons of plastic bottles away.
For me I think it is more of an OCD germ thing .. kinda like me washing my hands all the time.

I hate it when people say to me "oh you just wait" or "in a few months you will have to deal with this" in reference to a baby that is crying, making a mess, etc First of all I am a ftm but I am the oldest of 5 kids total, have babysat them all since I could be left alone, I have a niece and plenty of cousins.... Yes raising my own baby will be very different but I have seen a damn kid before... Plenty of kids, plenty of crying, plenty of poop!!! I wasn't born yesterday leave me alone!!!!!!
I'm sick of this in terms of 'you dont' know what you are in for' now that I'm having a boy (we have a dd already). I'm pretty sure I'm in for having a BABY, who for the first few months, will do the exact same things DD did as a newborn. Raising a boy doesn't get you some sort of medal of honor any more than raising a girl does.
I laugh at all the tap water hate, most bottled water is in fact tap water! I have a filtered water system through my fridge and I prefer it to bottled water any day!
I had my own UO but my brain seriously has been sucking lately and I have no clue what it was!

I do not agree that appearance doesn't matter or that judging is always wrong. Not sure if i was clear about that. I was talking about the skin pigmentation and random piercings affecting hiring practices. (I also said that the extremes are not always acceptable)
Hygiene is a health issue that affects those around you (germs ew!). Now if someone is just smelly (because of their culture or diet maybe?) then that's again - not something that should stop them from getting a promotion. Same goes for the erin brockoviches of the world. If you're going to dress in a manner that is going to make people assume things about you - you better have the balls to back it up with really good work ethic... and should be hired/fired based on your work production.
The provocative dress is interesting and I may be more flippy floppy about it. Just because I support women who choose to dress in whatever manner they find comfortable. But your clothes are more flexible than permanent ink (and piercings since those have to heal). So if you want to climb the ladder in stilettos and skirts above the knee: rock on. But you're gonna have an uphill battle and you will have to re-prove yourself time and time again because of the stigma that people place on you rather than your credentials.

Ugh, I hate that too. I have a very wild and headstrong little girl. It's not like this child is going to be so much more difficult just because he's got a penis. My girl puts most little boys to shame with her daringness.
1. I'm piercing my daughters ears as soon as the pediatrician says it's okay.
2. I LOVE pitbulls and I'm a firm believer that dog aggression has to do with doggie parenting/environment. Maybe I'm biased because we have a rottie and he's deemed an aggressive breed as well, but Bentley wouldn't hurt a fly and he's literally 150 lbs of pure love.
3. I grew up with well water (farm girl from Michigan ---> City of Sin transplant) and I HATE the taste of our tap water in Vegas. We have a filter at home and we buy bottled water because the water smells like chlorine.
My UO: I hate Starbucks coffee, but I LOVE the chai tea lattes.

I read about this yesterday. I'm kind of torn on it. The girl he killed suffered so I'm not sure I care if he suffered. But it does seem wrong morally to cause un-necessary pain and suffering. I suppose if we have to have the death penalty then I would prefer a single shot to the head.
On a side note, I wish death row prisoners were more freely allowed to donate their organs. At least offer the recipient a choice.
I hate watching movies. Every time someone wants to, I just think about how I'm going to be bored and anxious for the next 2 hours. Theaters and 3D movies are even worse.
I thought I was the only one!!!!
Me tooooo! I always convince my H that we have to watch movies in bed on a laptop, and that means I can get comfy and just fall asleep without anyone judging me.
Great article! I wish I had my piercing done by professionals...especially my cartilage piercing. So far DD shows no interest in getting her ears pierced, but when she does I'll definitely be taking her to a "real" piercing place rather than the mall.

I find myself not feeling sorry for him. I mean he raped and then took the life of a women who was 8 months pregnant at the time. That's 2 murders in one. Call me sick and twisted but I could care less that he suffered a little bit..they say he may have suffered from struggling to get breathe during his execution... her unborn baby struggled the same way. It was cut off from her oxygen supply after she died which I am sure led to the death of her unborn baby.

I just read one of the appeal briefs so I could understand the facts of the case. For the record, I'm a strong proponent of the death penalty. Frankly, I think he should have been put to death sooner. He murdered this girl in 1989, was sentenced to death in December of 1994, and, after numerous appeals (paid by tax dollars of course), this family finally received justice nearly 25 years after their daughter/wife was brutally murdered.
Obviously said victim wasn't mother of the year and she clearly put herself and her unborn child in a terrible situation, which, ultimately caused her demise. Regardless, this POS obviously knew what he was doing and because he was afraid to go to jail for raping a pregnant woman, he slit her throat. I say good riddance.
Speaking of tap vs bottled water, I hate ice made from our tap water. I love ice in EVERYTHING I drink, but I always have to drink it fast before it starts to melt or it ruins my drink. I prefer to buy Home City bagged ice.
And I just realized that almost all of my UOs are food or drink related. I think we know what my priorities in life are.
Nearly all of my dreams are about food, lol
ETA: I forgot to say I totally agree with you on the whole ice thing.

Pit bulls used to not scare me at all. Until one of my good friends who nursed his from puppyhood attacked him, ripping his arm open. He had to kill him to stop it. He still cries about loosing his baby, and has no idea wtf happened.
Then my cousin had her scalp ripped off by the family pit while she was sleeping on the couch. Her arm slid off and touched her while she was sleeping on the floor.
Then my next door neighbors killed their other two dogs that she has been with since she was a puppy.
None of them showed one sign of aggression. Not once. Now I'm traumatized and terrified of them. I'm not the biggest fan of bigger dogs as it is, but damn. I know most of you will never leave your dogs and babies unattended. But pits that have loving family oriented homes can still freak out. Just keep an extra eye on them.

On the workplace issue of tattoos and piercings. I think it's becoming more acceptable to have SOME form of these. I work at the hospital where technically I'm suppose to cover my wrist tattoo but my manager doesn't care and patients will ask about it and are actually interested.
It's simply the word livestrong on my wrist for my family who has passes from cancer.
I think society is slowly changing but the extremes will probably never be accepted completely ( whole neck tattoos, Ect)
But pits that have loving family oriented homes can still freak out.
Dogs. Dogs that have loving family oriented homes can still freak out. So can cats, ferrets and siblings. None of what you reported was because the dogs in question was a pit bull. Dogs are animals and need to be treated with the respect they deserve, that includes not leaving your small children with them unattended, in my opinion.
That's why I said none of you would leave you children and DOGS unsupervised. I have a lazy assed poodle mix and she's never unattended with DS. I don't trust her completely even though she never moves off the couch.
Dogs can bite, big dogs can do more damage.

It's one of those skin stretchers ( like they put in ear lobes) but in the lower lip and you see through to the teeth. It makes me hurt just thinking about it
I just dont think it's smart in ANY breeds case to assume that since you don't fight your dogs or abuse them they can't be aggressive at some point in time.

It's simply the word livestrong on my wrist for my family who has passes from cancer.
I think society is slowly changing but the extremes will probably never be accepted completely ( whole neck tattoos, Ect)
Dogs can bite, big dogs can do more damage.
It's one of those skin stretchers ( like they put in ear lobes) but in the lower lip and you see through to the teeth. It makes me hurt just thinking about it
