Crazy names from your family tree

Speaking of baby names...I've been looking to my family tree (I'm an ancestry.com addict) for ideas, and my ancestors and some names I am HARDLY fond of. Apparently Dorcas was a very popular girls name in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. I thought my fan was weird when I saw Dorcas popping up all over my tree bit apparently this hideous name was pretty ordinary. Queen and Princess are also in my family tree. I had one relative who named all their sons after presidents (with the last name as the middle name): George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson.

Re: Crazy names from your family tree

  • Handy Commodore is one from my mothers family. Strange! Swannie is another.

  • I also found some interesting family names on ancestry.com.  "Cotton" is in my family tree (a man's name).  Also, there are a few "William Cole" ancestors.  I thought that name is really cool (first name William, middle name Cole), but then I realized his initials would be "W.C."  That is the abbreviation for public bathroom here in Switzerland, so that is NOT going to work!

  • Dick was my great grandfathers first name.  He was named after a Richard who went by Dick and when they said they wanted to name their baby after him he said fine but my name isn't Richard it's Dick...so they named their baby Dick.  Wouldn't you reconsider at that point?
  • I honestly don't know that much about my family tree, outside of my great-grandparents. My mom and grandmother are both named "Irma" though, and apparently my grandma was really sad that my mom didn't name me Irma too. Thanks, mom! :)

  • Gerita. There are two. One went by Rita. No clue how someone came up with it. Bathsheba is on my H side.

  • One of my great aunts made a family tree years ago that goes back to the 1800s... There are some possibly usable girls names, but the name that takes the cake for awkward is, wait for it...

    Napoleon Bonaparte (last name).

It's important for you to know that this side of the family was dirt poor southern hillbillies who had a history of retreating further into the country whenever a war/draft was looming.

  • Not necessarily in my family tree but it almost was. When my mom was pregnant with me if they had a boy my dad intended on naming him Baton Cullpepper.
  • Both sides of my family are Swedish, so theres some interesting names. My maternal grandparents were Karna and Oscar Leroy, my great grandma was Hilma. There was also a Signe, which is a name I really like!

  • All of these old timey names :) I haven't looked too much into ancestry but I don't have to go too far to find some *ahem* interesting names.
We have a Diesel, Elektra, and Americus on my side. They're like 3rd cousins and I dont really know them personally. My dad wanted to name me Celestia and my mom nixed that one real quick. I swear my family is not a bunch of strippers...
