Julia vs Giulia

So our two girls have Italian names: Gabriella (Gabby) and Gianna. We are not Italian and the "G" was just coincidence.

We love the family name Julia for #3 but are getting pressured by everyone to use another G name. What about the Italian spelling Giulia?

Note: Hubby has been resistant as he thinks people will call her Julia Goolia like Drew Barrymore's nickname on some old movie lol. He was hoping to call her "Jules".

Appreciate your input!

As soon as I read the title of your post, I thought just this! (The Wedding Singer)

Please don't! you don't have to have a G name, might be nice for her to be a bit different from her siblings!

  • Julia. That's the only option here, and it's a nice name when spelled the right way

Nooooo.  Just no.  i think that's awful, but as a disclaimer I hate when people spell traditional names in weird ways.

Just because it's not traditional to YOU does not mean it's non-traditional.  It's very traditional in Italian.
I had a camper named Giulia so I actually have very fond memories of that name.  There was also a "Julia" in the cabin, so Giulia had us call her "goo-lia". She had the type of personality that could pull it off.

I think you might've missed my second post but whatever. And yes, being not traditional TO ME has a lot of bearing on how appealing the name is TO ME.

  • DH is right when I saw The G one, I thought goolia...

  • Thanks ladies - genuinely. Our first pick was Julianna but we're worried it sounds too much like Gianna.

    I appreciate your honesty!!

  • I totally thought the Julia Gulia thing when I read your post title. I wouldn't do it.

what about Gemma? I agree with the rest on the whole goolia thing

I LOVE Gemma but DH isn't feeling it. I actually wasn't sure if people could pronounce it. Giulia is pretty common here so I wasn't as concerned - glad I asked you ladies!

  • Oh, I love the name Julia. I just happen to think of the movie whenever I hear it. Its not a bad thing!
  • I would definitely assume a strong Italian heritage. I grew up on Long Island though, so Italian names are the norm to me.

  • @vinny424 I hate "the pencil test"! When I was little I only saw Alisa and now that I'm older I don't see that spelling I see Alyssa.
I do personally love it with a G, but screw what your family wants! It's what you and your hubby want. Jules is a very cute nickname.

  • Using the Italian spelling in and of itself is not a bad thing. That being said, I definitely would not stretch the name you want to fit into the G theme unless you and your husband have a personal interest in the G theme. If it's just your families being pushy, screw it. Name her what YOU want to name her.

  • Well if you must go with another G name, what about Gillian (Jillian with a G) instead of Giulia? Just an idea. I love the name, but can't convince DH.

FWIW...This is exactly how I read the name in the thread title and immediately thought of the wedding singer.

  • My name is Julia. I've never been called Julia-goolia! My nickname was Jules growing up...
  • My DDs name is Juliana and I went through this delimma with her name for a short time. I like Guiliana but since I'm not italian, I went with the name that would have the least trouble.

  • I don't think Julia goolia as soon as I see Julia, but I read giulia as goolia immediately (but I'm just a dumb southerner). I also don't think it's a horrible nn, but op specifically asked, soooooo . . .

  • wasn't drew barrrymore's name julia gulia in never been kissed, when she goes back to highschool??... LOL nope it was Josie Geller but they called her Josie Grossie in that one..

  • I am seriously stunned here - people wouldn't use the name Julia b/c they are afraid someone will say Julia Goolia? Do you not realize that The Wedding Singer is just not that big of a deal and it's super generational? I just can't believe a beautiful, classic name would be ruined for you by a 90's teen movie.

And our kids will have no frame of reference for using it. What kid born in 2014 is going to quote a 90's movie?

  • I'm not a huge fan of the name, but I vote Julia and not the Italian spelling, especially since it's not a personal cultural influence for you.

A really cool one, that's who!

    LONG LIVE THE 90'S YEW!
LOL okay but most kids won't refer to a 90's movie for name-teasing. It'll come from something in their generation.

  • OMG!!!!!  That is soooo funny about your husband and Julia Goolia!  When I named my daughter seven years ago, this is the exact argument that her father used!  Only her friend's parents, who have seen the movie, will use this reference and they will be jerks.  I think kids her age will really not have a clue about that reference.  She has not had any teasing about her name so far....knock on wood....

Also, my vote is for Julia :)

  • I've actually never seen that movie and I still thought that
