Training to feed...?

DH's assistant soccer coach has two sets of twins (both grown in high school now). I was talking to him at the game this weekend over my lazy eater and how in the world did his wife feed them both. He told me that she was advised to only allow them to feed 15 mins at a time to train them to eat in that timeframe. Now obviously, recommendations for infants have changed in the past 15 or so years. I can't imagine this would be in alignment with feeding on demand as we're told to now. I'm just SO frustrated with my lazy little eater (currently asleep on my boob but the minute I try to extract my nip she starts again). I would never try anything like this without my pedi's approval, have not discussed, and just can't imagine this even fits with today's guidelines. But I'm curious to your thoughts?

Re: Training to feed...?

  • My LO does the same thing sometimes! It will look like she is asleep and then he will start sucking again. What I do for that is as soon as I notice her stop I will try to take it away and I won't let her fall asleep with boob in her mouth. When she is actually sleeping she will spit it out.

I have never heard of feed training, I'm curious to see responses.

  • Hm... I will have to talk to her about it. She's gaining fine so that isn't a concern. My pedi did suggest having DH help me when he can with BFing by swaddling with her feet out, DH tickling her feet to keep her awake while I control the nipple shield (irritated we still need it...). I could probably do 20/20 that way when he's home & hope she gets the hang of it? She's pretty consistent with every 3 hours during the day, 4-5 at night. It would certainly help with things like being able to use the bathroom & brushing my teeth...*sigh*

  • One of the pedi's in DD's doctors group has mentioned feeding 15 minutes a side.
  • The only concern would be that your child cannot empty the breast in that time and is not getting enough hind milk. The potential repercussions would be LO eating more often or a negative impact on supply. Most babies become more efficient and quicker as they get older. If not, then it is worth seeing an LC to determine what is causing LO inability to efficiently empty the breast.
  • My lo's time on the boob got way faster when I weaned off of the nipple shield. Not sure if that's an option for you but it made a huge difference for me!
  • I desperately want off the nipple shield but she struggles to latch without because I have flat nipples :( But that would explain the 1-2 hour nursing...

  • Have you tried starting with the nipple shield to raise it and then taking it away? It took me about three days just to get her to latch that way, but it was worth the frustration in the end.
  • On one side I can get her to latch that way fairly easily (like now), the other side she screams bloody murder at. That side is flatter than the other but I can't BF from only one side...I f***ing hate this nipple shield.

  • That sucks, I feel ya. Hang in there and hopefully she gets speedier!
  • I will cut him off after 15 min unless I hear active sucking. I don't see the point of nursing for an hour
