Dating U/S, no/little fetal pole

Took a pregnancy test on Jan 6 and got a BFP. I immediately called to schedule an appointment to confirm the results at the hospital. Once there
I was sent to OB and told to do a "self-referral" since I had a positive home pregnancy test. When I went to OB I informed them that I wasn't sure how far along I was since I'd only had two cycles since giving birth to DD (17 months, one Oct 12th and Nov 26th), so I was scheduled for a dating ultrasound the next morning (Jan 9). DH and I went to the ultrasound the next morning. The resident asked about my LMP and said that I should be around 7 weeks. Initially, she tried an abdominal ultrasound (?) but couldn't see much so she switched to the transvaginal. After a couple of minutes she said she could see the yolk sac but couldn't see anything inside. She asked when I took the pregnancy test, f I'd had and bleeding (I haven't) or any other signs of miscarriage, which I haven't. She dated me at 5w and said that she can't tell if I'd lost the pregnancy or if it was too early to tell. She seemed like a really nice girl but I kind of think she was trying to soften the blow and not be the bearer of bad news. Then, she went to look on a bigger monitor and came back and said that she saw a little bit of a fetal pole and that I should reschedule another ultrasound for a week or two later.
Afterwards I went back to OB and was asked if she gave me a date and I said no and that I needed to reschedule another ultrasound. The nurse scheduled it for Jan 29 at 0800, an hour before the prenatal orientation that I was previously scheduled to attend. I know it's really early but I was so heartbroken after leaving the hospital I broke down in tears. I didn't know how I'd go about the next three weeks wondering it everything was okay. It's been a couple days so far and I can't stop thinking about it.
Also, my husband has to go to training on the 26th(military) and he'll be gone until we move Feb 15th so I have to go to the appointment myself. I am so nervous I don't know what to do.

Re: Dating U/S, no/little fetal pole

  • Ohh, I am sorry to read this but I wanted to tell you my story real quick. When I was pg with my DD, I found out in February but I was unsure how far along I was.

I went to my RE and they did an ultrasound, I remember the us tech saying "oh I hate giving bad news on a Friday".

Turns out they could only see the yolk sac and there was not a fetal pole. I went back in 4 days later and there it was plus a heart beat. She is now 7.

I hope you have good news when you go back. My thoughts are with you.

  • You would have been 6 weeks, not 7 based on LMP. Chances are you ovulated a week after CD14 and that explains why you are a week "behind". Hopefully you get some good news at your next ultrasound.

I agree with this. Especially if you've only had 2 cycles since your last PG. I only had one cycle since my last PG and that made it hard to date how far along I was. Based on my LMP I would be 21 weeks right now but in reality because I ovulated a lot later, I'm only 17 weeks.

They also couldn't find a HB at my very first u/s because I was only around 6 weeks. Even at my first appt at 12 weeks, they couldn't find a HB using a doppler. Try not to worry. If there wasn't any hope, they would have told you by now.
  • So sorry. I went through something similar (inconclusive u/s with follow-up to confirm). If you really don't know your LMP, it could just be too early to tell. For me, I knew I was far enough along that it wasn't a mix-up with dating. Having the extra time before the follow-up let me work through some emotions before I got the confirmation.

Schedule some fun activities with your DD to take your mind off of worrying.

  • I used to have really long cycles. When I was pregnant with my son, I went into the doctor and based on my LMP, they gave me a due date of early December. When I had my first u/s, the baby was measuring 6w when it "should" have been 14w based on my LMP. I have a healthy almost 3 year old today.

You probably ovulated much later in your cycle. It is not at all uncommon. Good luck!

  • Thank you for the encouragement! I have no idea when I ovulated so I really didn't know how to calculate the weeks. I guess I'll have to start keeping track of things, especially when TTC.
