What do/will your LOs call their grandparents?

Re: What do/will your LOs call their grandparents?

  • My parents are already MiMi and Poppi and my IL's are already Grandma and Grandpa. When I was little I called both sets of grandparents Grandma and Grandpa. To decipher between them it was Grandma who lives on the Beach or Grandma who parks in the road. My dad's parents (parks on the road) died whe. I was 7, so it was just Grandma and Grandpa after that.

  • Our kids have a LOT of grandparents... Both my parents and DHs parents, both sets of my grandparents are still living, and one of DHs grandfathers is still living. The majority are just grandpa "whoever" and grandma "whoever" other than two of the great grandpas are "papa" and then MIL wanted to go by "Grammy".

  • @reneewhite90 I've got that too! Which I feel beyond lucky to have and for DS to have as well. Pretty much all my parents and grandparents (and DHs as well) are divorced and remarried so there's just grandparents running around everywhere

Shouldn't the grandparents chose what they want to be called? DH's parent are just grandma and grandpa. My mom is Mamina. I called my grandma Nona (Italian). My cousins kids call their grandparents Safta (Hebrew) and Dieda (Russian). DH calls his grandparents grandma Lastname and grandpa Lastname. I find it extremely weird.

I totally agree with PPs about grandparents requesting a name. Our situation is kind of weird because she's only ever seen DS once when he was about a year old, whereas we see my parents everyday so he's had a chance to actually call them something.

I guess SILs new baby will be the golden child of the in law side since things are already shaking up. "Lola" aka Nanny aka Gran aka Grammy exclaimed the other day (via text so it was a thought out thought) that she can't believe she'll be a grandmother at the end of the summer (when SIL is due)....wow thanks Lola
WTF?  I'd be pissed about that one.

  • My mother is still petitioning to be called Princess. No. Just. No.

My parents are Grandma and Grandpa X and my inlaws are Papa and Grandma FN. My son was the first grandchild for my parents but 5th for my inlaws. We had no say in what inlaws were being called. But it works.

  • I may be boring, but I called both my maternal and paternal grandparents Grandma and Grandpa.  If we were ever all together, I referred to them as "Grandma + last name"

This is what I always did too, everyone in my extended family does the same. TBH I never realized there were so many variations. My MIL said she wanted to be called "Nana". I thought she was joking. To me it sounds like the kid is trying to say "banana" and failing. I had to laugh. I can't decide if I can go along with it or not.

  • DS only has one set of grandparents (mine), and we call them Grandma and Grandpa. I see no need for cute, creative names, and it annoys the piss out of me when my parents' friends brag about what their grandkids call them. As though a Mimi or a Nana is any more loved than a Grandma or a Grandmother.

Euphemisms and "cutesy" words are a major pet peeve.

  • Well, my mom will be Grandma for sure. Her husband is currently PaPaw to my niece, but I HATE PaPaw it sounds so country I'm going to try to change his name for my kids. Good luck though as the presents at Christmas were addressed from Grandma and PaPaw. My ILs are Nanny (she's still trying to get the kids to call her Nana, but it isn't happening) and PawPaw. He was supposed to be PaPaw too, but the kids call him PaPaw and its not so bad. My dad isn't really in the picture, but I'm going to vote for Grandad. I love Grandad and if I had had kids first that would have totally been my SF's name. Growing up all of my Grandmas and Grandpas were just Grandma ____ and Grandpa ____ with the exception of my great-grandparents where I had 2 Grannys and a Mammaurine (Her name was Maurine).

  • I have 3 sets (with stepparents).  So far I've heard Side 1 wants: Papaw and Grammy (We live in Texas).  Side 2 wants: Grandpa and Granny.  Waiting on Side 3.  Hope it doesn't get confusing for the little one, lol.  I always called both of my sets the same thing!

  • Our LO will only have two grandpas.  My dad is German and will be Opa.  DH's dad is British and is already Granddad for our nieces.
    image
  • My mom is Dutch, so my parents are Oma and Opa. DD calls her Omie to be funny and affectionate. IL's are Grandma and Papa but when DD started talking she couldn't say "grandma" too well and it came out sounding like Dama. Sometimes we still call her GlamaDama when she's all dressed up. :)

H's Mom and Dad are Grandma and Grandpa. H was their last child with a huge span between sibs so they are quite a bit older then my parents. It suits them and they are more traditional. My Dad is PopPop, like his father before him and while my Mother's parents are my Oma and Ota/Opa (yes, it's German for whomever mentioned that), my Mom chose Nanny because we all agreed Oma sounds a bit... antiquated. My sister's niece from her SIL have a 36(ish) year old grandma and they call her 'Oma' and we always snickered about how it aged her too much. Just IMO, as a grandma I would want to still sound youthful, if possible. lol

    EDIT: wording.

  • Nonnie and Pa on my DHs side and Mimi and Papa on my side.
  • My parents are Mimi and Pops, and DH's are Grammie and Grumpy. For a while there Grumpy came out as Groggy and Grubby. It was pretty cute :)

  • My parents are already Grammy and Grampy. SMIL is already Memere. This is the first grandchild for MIL/SFIL. MIL mentioned she might want to go by Ma because that's what she called her grandmother. I'm thinking it's too close to Mom, but IDK. She was a bit on the spot when she said that at our pg announcement with all the parents there, so we'll see.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • My mom always said she just wanted to be grandma, but that was just to hard for M to say, so she settled for Nana. She'd rather have Nana than no name at all! My dad has a slew of grandkids and has always been Papa. With the IL's (who see M a lot less frequently than my parents) I try and just do grandma and grandpa.
  • This will be the first grandchild on both sides, so both sets got to pick their names. My parents will be Nana and Grand Pappy. MIL will be Gam Gam, though she has gotten out of control with it recently, so H and I are seriously considering teaching LO to call her Lady.
  • My niece started calling my mom YaYa - so I'm sure it'll stay the same. Hopefully LO calls my MIL grandmother, nana .... Something ugly :-) I know my FIL likes grandad or pop.... My dad isn't in the picture but will call my papa - papa :)
  • Grandpa and Grandma on my side, Mamita and Papito on his
  • My ILs will probably just be Grandma and Grandpa, unless they or my son comes up with something different (LO will be their first grandchild). My niece and nephew call my mom "Gabby" which started as a mispronunciation of "Grandmommy", and my dad is Grandpa Paul...or sometimes "GrandPaul" haha. I think LO will prob follow those names for my parents.

  • Well we already have names since ours is a lot younger ... His dad is papadaddy and stepfather is grandan.. my dad and stepmom are Boppa and nana and my my is Grammy ...

  • DH's parents were already "Grandma" and "Grandpa" to our niece and nephew, so we stuck with those names. My dad is German so he is "Opa" and my mom is "Grams".

  • MIL has been calling herself grandma to the dog and cats for so long, that our dog doesn't understand that 'grandma' isn't her actual name. That said, I'm pretty sure that's what she'd like to go by, but I think it'll depend on what Hayley decided to call her once she's talking. I called my grandma 'gram' because grandma was too difficult for about 6 months once I was talking. :) FIL just asked to please not be called Poppy. He's cool with Pop-Pop and a slew of others. Jokingly, I think we are going to try to get her to call him Daideó which is irish for grandfather (SIL and BIL are so on board). My grandparents will in turn be called Great Grandma and Great Grandpa by DH and I and she can make her own names for them as well.

  • My parents are plain old grandma and papa and ILs are grandma and grandpa .. My dd's call my grandma grandma as well so my clever 3 year old has color coded them.. No joke my mom is yellow Grandma because she once wore a yellow batman shirt MIL is blue grandma because of her purse and my grandma is green grandma because it's her favourite color brilliant!!

  • @Jennish11 My mom is thinking about Oma, too. I'm not sure about it either. I'm into Grandmom.

My MIL wants to be called Nana which I don't like, but it's what she called her grandmother do that's fine with me.
  • My mom and dad will be PawPaw and Grandma. Im not sure about DH's parents yet. They're FTGP so I'm sure something speshul and youneek will be requested.
