Broken coccyx?

I haven't been on here much but we had our surprise baby girl on December 16. Immediately after giving birth they told me i either broke or dislocated my coccyx.
All I can say is.... It sucks!! It feels like it pops but I'm not sure what the pain is exactly. Sitting anywhere hurts.. I would much rather lay down. Getting out of bed is horrible and we all now how often we have to do that! (And my husband works out of town so even more when he is gone ): )
Anyway... I have done a bit of research... But has this happened to any of you guys? Did you have more kids after ? ( or was this your first? )
My doctor said some people don't have anymore because it could get worse. They said healing time could be anywhere from 4 weeks- 10 years?!!
Just seeing how often this happens...
My doctors appointment isn't until jan 27... So until then, I don't know too much.
Sorry this was all typed out on my phone!

Re: Broken coccyx?

  • I had a c section, but I know my mom broke her tailbone with either my brother or me. She didn't have any problems with it until she got older, but now she has to be careful with how she sits for long periods of time. Other than that, she's ok.

  • When I was 13 I slipped on Ice and broke mine. It hurt for a good year or so. I could barely go from sitting to standing at school(those chairs suck the way they are already) I haven't had any pain since I was 16? Or so. I didn't have any problems when I had little one. It's also almost been 7 years since.
  • I broke mine as a kid. I delivered vaginally just fine, but I'm not sure it's the exact same thing as I didn't break it during delivery.

Sorry, that's not a pleasant experience and I can't imagine taking care of a newborn and on the mend from breaking my tailbone at the same time.
  • Had it with my 2nd. It hurt like a mother. Basically there isn't anything they can "do" to fix it, just time. Mine took about 8 weeks to heal completely. I've not had anymore issues and we just had our 3rd, med free.

  • As a teenager, I had an abnormally curved coccyx (it turned inward instead of being straight).  It was excruciating to sit at those school desks (or anywhere for that matter).  They told me the only thing that may fix it was childbirth.  The pain subsided long before I had my first DD but every now and then, my tailbone is tender.

I hope you recover in more like 4 weeks and not 10 years.  I understand the pain.

  • When I was 16, the swing I was on broke and I landed on it.  Not sure if I broke it, but I couldn't sit very well for a few weeks.
  • I broke mine after a few too many cocktails and a misstep into a hot tub. Anyways, it is still painful to this day and that was 5 years ago. I have had 2 children since and have not had any more pain during pregnancy or labor... It was about the same as it is while not pregnant. Hope that helps and that it stops hurting so much soon!
  • I snapped mine when I delivered my first.  It was agony for about 6 months and healed completely in about 10 months.  I had zero issues this time.

  • I broke mine during delivery!  I was so miserable too.  I ended up doing months of physical therapy afterwards but like others have said aside from sitting on a doughnut there is nothing they can do for it which stinks.  Mine took about 6mo to feel better.  I ended up opting to have a c-section this time around (not only because of the break, but because I had horrid deliveries in general with my other two kids and many other long lasting issues as well) and so far the recovery has been much easier for me!  Not saying that is what you should do next time, but the break was so bad for me that it definitely weighed in when I was making my decision.

When I was 19 (35 now), I slipped and cracked my coccyx. It took forever to heal. This pregnancy really exacerbated it and the nurses thought DS2 probably cracked it a bit again during birth. The pain was pretty bad for the first week, but has gotten better. Now it's just uncomfortable...especially when I sit or lay on directly on it.
