Sudden bath hate?

DD has always loved her baths, but the past three nights she wants to hop out almost immediately, before I have a chance to wash her.  I don't think anything has changed in terms of water temperature or anything.  The only thing I can think of was that my parents took care of her for two nights last week and maybe they made the water too cold or scrubbed her too much or something and now she has an aversion?

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Re: Sudden bath hate?

  • yes, DS has been having a similar, weird issue with aversions lately-- like the other day the bath water was a little hot when i put him in (i was in the tub, too), and then the next time i went to take a bath with him, he didn't want to get in and started crying, and then clung desperately to me in the bath.

also, a couple of days ago i yanked one arm of his shirt a little to hard to try to take it off and didn't realize it was hurting him, and now he is MAJORLY traumatized by having his shirt taken off, like as soon as we start to approach him to do it he bursts into hysterical tears.

i dunno, are their memories improving or something, so now if something bothers them they remember better and are super sensitive about it? i am baffled.

  • We had a similar issue, although it is that he's fine being in the tub as long as I don't clean him (he doesn't like having water put on his head). So instead I took a shower and put him in the shower with me. He was fine with it. You would try that.

  • DD used to love bath time then about 3 months ago she started freaking out and would cling to me and it looked like I was the one taking the bath. I started taking a shower with her and it seems to work better, she still freaks when I go to wash her hair.
Also in the bath tub I got her to start "washing" herself with her wash cloth and dumping water on herself with a cup and that really helped calm things down for us.

  • I just had this problem last night. Similar to vvvfee, Jeffrey clung to me as I tried to put him in the tub. I think he was overly tired because he didnt nap well and was acting tired when I got home from work.
  • DD has HATED the bath for about 2 months now. I can't recall anything that would have traumatized her. We barely bathe her now because it is akin to torturing her (shower included, and H or I always get in the tub with her). I think it is getting better though, on her last bath she only cried and didn't thrash around or scream.
  • DD also hates having water poured on her, or if she's laying down in the tub she hates it in her ears...she used to LOVE it and splash around. TBH I was secretly blaming my husband for traumatizing her by pouring water in her face too many times (by accident) but maybe there's just something in their development right now that makes them innately scared of being submerged in water? That's just my total guess.

I'm glad I'm not the only one dealing with this now.  DD is fine as long as the water is coming out of the spout, and then she wants to get out.  So last night I just washed her really fast while the water was coming out, and then she wanted to get out once I turned it off.  I have always used bath time as a time filler in the evenings when she started to get tired and cranky, and I'm sad that I can't do that right now :)

Oh, I also thought I'd add that DD is in weekly swim lessons and has no problem going underwater.
