  • @lilygrace48  Happy Birthday!

@mullenem Yes, the vast majority of people associate with the sex organs with which they were born.  But not everyone does.  It is a small population, but they do exist, and I think we as a society are not terribly accepting and open to that difference.  If a child grows up to associate differently than how they were born, that is not their fault, and I just hope people can be open to the idea that it is a possibility.  Slim, but still there.  So I think it's great that there is an attempt to open peoples' eyes to the difference - I have seen WAY too many horrific Facebook conversations to make me think that we are all that close to being an open and accepting society.

  • Happy birthday, @lilygrace48! It's my DH's birthday today, too.

@mullenem, I agree (as always) with @chickpea912's points on the sex/gender conversation. I'd also like to add that, even if a child does identify with the sex with which he/she was born, our system of dichotomous, inflexible gender still does a lot of harm. Basically, if a little boy wants to dance ballet, or play with barbies, or wear sparkly headbands, he goes against our society's "gender norms" and is often shunned, sometimes even by his own parents. That doesn't mean he's gay or identifying as feminine, he's just locked into football and GI Joes and toy swords because of his sex. I have more issues with that than the terminology. (And, while I'm sure that's not true for your family, there's an absolutely ridiculous conversation happening on the "having a girl, wanted a boy" thread right now that proves EXACTLY this point.)

That's why I get frustrated when people say they know their kid's gender at their anatomy scan. Not because they're making a semantic error (though the English teacher in me says "nooooo"), but rather because they're setting their kid up to be a "boy" before he even arrives here. I think pretty much every kid has an ungendered "personality," and our society is pretty pushy about how that develops.

  • as silly as it may sound and I would typically make fun of people in New England who don't own shovels,we don't have any because we just started moving in and they are at my place back in MA and there is about 2 ft of snow outside that my complex hasn't plowed yet. Grrrr

  • Happy Birthday @lilygrace48! I don't have much of a FFFC. MIL and BIL were supposed to come over yesterday to help DH paint the nursery but didn't come, and I was kind of happy about it. I felt bad DH had to paint alone but I just really did not want to deal with my IL's at all.
  • My FFFC is that I'm absolutely terrified that I will accidentally break etiquette rules for my shower (none of the obvious ones--I'm not throwing my own and I'm a FTM, etc. etc.). We're planning on building big, comprehensive registries because of the completion coupon (and a few relatives who've mentioned they want to go in together to get something big), but I don't want people to think we're gift grabby because we have a $250 breast pump and a $300 travel system on our registry. I legitimately tossed and turned last night worrying about this.

I wouldn't worry about this. Most people put big things on their registries for this reason. Obviously, you'll have stuff in a lot of different price points. The only time I side eyed something like that was when a friend of a friend registered only at RH Baby & Child.

You could always wait until after the shower to add those items if you are worried. I filled in a bunch of stuff that was random at the last minute that I wanted the discount on. Those gifts probably are a little much but I wouldn't see anything wrong with something slightly larger since sometimes people like to go in together to make their shopping easier. I know my mom, sister and I have done combo gifts in the past

This is a great idea. Thank you!

One of my friends is going to wedding and has been complaining about how long the bride's registry is and how much she must expect to get, so really she's just making me nervous.

    ETA: bold fail.

  • Thanks for all my birthday wishes!!!  @deepoceanmama, happy birthday to your DH!  Also, on the shower front, I'd put them on there.  People who can't afford them or don't want to spend that much won't, and you'd be surprised how many people DO want to spend that much.  I kept my registry for C fairly straightforward and didn't put huge items on it...and then got in trouble with my MIL because I didn't have enough "big items" and her family didn't want to buy me small things!  I maintained then, and still do, that they could have bought me a lot of the little things, but if they really want me to add the entire travel system I was planning on buying, sure!  I vote put it all on there now, if people really know you, they know you aren't being gift grabby.

    This. Exactly.

We were so blessed by our community of friends and family that most of our bigger purchases were taken care of. That didn't mean that one person paid the $200+ for my breastpump; the cost of the item was split between a group of people to where their $20 each went toward something I really, REALLY needed and not just another outfit.

We only registered for items we were going to buy anyway, so it wasn't a huge list, but it wasn't only big items. That completion coupon came in handy later!

ETA: So just don't feel bad about having some big items on your registry. People will buy you want they can/want regardless.

  • I normally try my best to not be a judgey mcjudgerson when it comes to different parenting styles but I always side eye those who suggest biting back to get your kid to stop biting you. Or hitting back when being hit. I just don't get the "showing them how it feels" mindset. You just bit your 18 month old CHILD.

This FFFC brought to you by a facebook post last night.

  • People who put real stock in old wives tales drive me nuts. My uncle has sworn I am having a girl now based on the heartbeat. I kinda want a boy solely to prove him wrong

I think the idea of needing a "matching set" is dumb. At my holiday party everyone said that I must want a girl now since we have a boy. It is not like I am buying salt and pepper shakers people. I want two delightful kids, the second one boy or girl will complete that.

Not neccessarily FFFCs but I had to get it out there what was driving me crazy and didn't want to be a SS
DS' HB was crazy high for a long time! Everyone said girl, even after we clearly saw his penis on the u/s. A friend of mine was convinced it was wrong because "no boy could have that high of a heartbeat."

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Ooh... I've got one.

We are only purchasing one really big ticket item. I want to get a really good jogging stroller once my doctor gives me the go-ahead to start running again after the baby is here. Also, winter in Ontario... I think those big rubber tires will come in handy over snow drifts. For some reason, my MIL and I were talking about strollers, and she offered to buy it for us. Which is wonderful, and sweet, and generous! But... for some reason, I had always assumed my parents would buy us our stroller (they bought my sister hers, a specialty bike stroller). And, I guess maybe I had been looking forward to going shopping for it with my mom?

So, I have this weird disappointment in my gut because I feel like I'm shutting my parents out of the chance to offer to buy us our stroller, while at the same time knowing I'm being ridiculous because why does it matter where it comes from, especially since we would be completely happy to buy it for ourselves? And besides, I'm sure my parents will have no problem finding other ways to spoil their grandbaby.

It's absolutely ridiculous to be disappointed about the source of a gift right? This makes no sense. I'm being silly. Flame away!

  • My FFC. I have really bad anxiety over having this baby. We wanted it so badly and I am excited, but I get this overwhelming feeling that something is going to go wrong or we won't be able to make ends meet. We both have good jobs and we are comfortable, but there are so many unknowns when it comes to this. I also have anxiety about it not just being the two of us any more. In every decision we will have to think of the third person in our family. As I type this I feel so guilty and I haven't told anyone how I feel. H is so beyond excited I don't want to unload on him and I really don't want my mom's advice. I know in the end everything will work itself out, but right now it is so scary.

  • I just shake my head when I read posts where the SO "doesn't want kids" and reacts poorly to a pregnancy. Did they not talk about it before? Did they use protection that failed? Was it a sneaky, underhanded move on the poster's part? I just have so many questions.

I realized why I don't regularly buy chocolate; all of my Christmas chocolate is almost gone. DH hasn't eaten any of his yet. Not much of a confession...

I know exactly how you feel, don't feel guilty about feeling this way, this is a life changing event! But once that baby is in your arms I think you will instantly forget all of that! I've been worried about losing some alone time with my DH too, but then I think I am so grateful to be having a baby with him and making a little miracle together! It's scary, but so exciting at the same time!

  • I really want to try those "It Works!" wrap things (post-baby). I know they're just a temporary fix and a scam, but I have a family member who sells them and she posts amazing pics of the people she wraps that I'm almost convinced lol
Yup, total scam. It might tighten up the outer layer of skin for a little while, but there's no way a wrap is going to actually help you lose weight and gain muscle.

Every year, we each get at least three chocolate letters. (It's a Dutch thing.) I've already eaten one, but he hasn't touched any of his. I'm really worried I'm going to eat all of mine before he cracks even one open, because there's no way he's share his Ms with me...

  • @read247 if you get the bacon bowl, lemme know how it works, k?
Lol! I might actually skip that one because you can turn your muffin pan upside down and do the same thing. Works for toasting tortillas too so no need for the tortilla bowl. But mmmm, bacon!

I told work my dog walker couldn't make it today because of unsafe conditions due to Hercules, so I had to work from home. E.G., bump in my sweatpants on the couch all day re-watching Lost and Downton Abbey. (Edit: that was a lie)

I went away someplace warm for the holidays with my family and ate key lime pie for practically every meal. I mean, onlyelittler!)

That sounds like a delicious tradition! We usually buy Lindt and Ritter Sport chocolates for Christmastime. It's not super fancy but it's so much better than Hershey's.

    I'm not knocking Hershey's, I'll eat most chocolate. I think I have a problem.
