July 2014 Moms

Crafty moms, any special project for baby in the works?

I enjoy knitting, crochet, and a variety of other crafting hobbies, and I also really enjoy seeing what other projects people are up to.  I'd love to see what you're working on for baby!

I started this blanket last year, but abruptly stopped when I miscarried.  I've picked it up again.  It started as a knitted zig-zag pattern, but I didn't like how it was coming along, so I switched to crochet.  I've made quite a bit of progress in the past few weeks.

So what are you making for your little one/s?  :)

Re: Crafty moms, any special project for baby in the works?

  • Once I finish the quilt I'm currently working on, I'll start one for this baby. DD has one I made her, too. I'll probably try to knit some socks as well, but I'm having a hard time getting motivated to knit a sweater or anything because it's going to be so darn hot in July.

I will use a knitting loom (because that's the only way I know how to knit/crochet or anything) and make the baby a hat like I did for DD.  I am not a crafty person but I wanted each child to have something that I made by hand for them.  BTW, if you don't know how to crochet or knit, a knitting loom is insanely easy.

  • I just got a new sewing machine so I'll make some nb dipes. I want to make DS a quilt for his upcoming big boy room, and after that I'll try to make one for this kid. I don't have the patience to knit anything but a scarf, but maybe I'll do something cute for winter.
  • Once we find out the sex, I'm knitting a blanket and a hat or two, plus I have a cute sweater vest pattern I want to try. What I'm really looking forward to is making some custom blocks!

  • I am going to make the baby a quilt for the nursery (just decorative, not to be used in the crib obviously) and a quilt for "game day".  I'll probably make a small one for my alma mater and a small one for DH's favorite hockey team, the Bruins.  I just made one for a friend's baby shower a few months ago and I think it turned out really cute.

Other than that, I'm not sure.  I want to make Christmas stockings for our whole family and I'd like to make the baby's first few Halloween costumes.

I love seeing everyone's craft ideas!

  • Baby sweater vests are about the cutest thing I've seen. You'll have to share pictures!

  • Oooh, I want to see the sweater vest too!!

    njnagem - That's a beautiful stocking!

I like everybody's ideas... yeah, it's going to be hot in July... but I figure that buys us a little more time on the warm articles, right? ha ha ha

  • I just started crocheting a little blanket, it's green and yellow. It's all my first time trying the bubble/rasberry stitch, so far I like how it's coming out. I want to finish early because I have a good friend due at the same time and I want to make her a blanket as well

  • I will make my babe a quilt or two, probably some cuter burp cloths, I want to try to make some cloth diapers and some decorations for the nursery.
  • I'm kinda a crazy crafter. I'm going to do the crib set, sheets, changing pad cover, diapers and wipes. My mom is really excited to make clothes (she used to make all natural baby clothes and sell them at flea markets with crazy gathers and amazing stuff). Ill also (of course) make some things.

We've planned out the room but I think Hus is going to do the hard work for that. :) he's still trying to convince me that he should make the crib (he did make our pup an amazing 4 post toddler size bed). :)
  • When it gets closer I will crochet a blanket. I'm not worried about finishing because I will (hopefully! ) have most of july after school is out.

  • I haven't started yet but I'm planning to sewing a onesie for LO for his/her first day. Along with a hat and socks. MIL will be knitting a blanket. I feel bad becuz I didn't think to sew anything for my other kids so, now I try and make them costumes for dress up whenever I can. Also! It was a plan for my wife and I to paint baby's room and go all out but, we'll see how things go.
  • I'll be crocheting a blanket at some point! I'll prob start once we know if the peanut is a boy or girl. I think crocheting goes faster than knitting! Pinterest is overwhelming these days, but I saw a car seat/carrier cover pattern on there that is adorable!

  • I haven't started anything yet, but as I quilt, I will definitely be making one for baby. I will also probably make a lot of clothes and costumes for Halloween and whatnot since costuming is kind of my thing. And stuffed animals, my final for fiber arts in college was a stuffed dragon that flaps its wings if you squeeze it, so I'll be making some of those types of things as well.

I also draw, so hopefully I'll make some illustrations too.
  • I've been trolling ravelry for patterns and will be knitting up a storm when the MS subsides!
  • We're doing a book based nursery so I'm making little felt characters and things for the mobile and probably some plush letter blocks and toys. I'm making some of the sheets. I might do some knitting but usually I'm more into sewing. I see many cosplay outfits in this child's future.

I plan to crochet a baby blanket and make some sort of sign of baby's name for above the crib as I did for DD. I also plan to do a letter for his/her door. Just need to know the sex so I know which name to use and colors :)

This is the baby blanket I am currently making.  I haven't decided if I will use it for this baby or keep it on hand for a gift and use a different yarn.

I want to do a beach theme nursery. I am going to make shadow boxes with sand and beach related items. I also want to make a cute sign I saw that says twinkle twinkle little star, with a shell as the star

This is moreso for DS and I will have one made for Baby#2 also, but I'm going to by supplies to make Ana White's The Little Tower Helper.  DS just has to see what I'm doing anytime I'm in the kitchen and loves to play in the water in the sink, so I think this will be a lifesaver.

I love all Ana White. That tower is on my list too. We made DD the table & bench set she has for Christmas! We also made the 2x4 cubby shelf for all her toys and the open toy box for her stuffed animals!

  • SO's mom just got us a sewing machine for Christmas.. I'm looking into seeing how hard it would be to try making some of my own cloth diapers.

So easy! OK... Haven't actually made them yet, I'm waiting on my kam snap pliers to get here. Amazon has them for $20. There are tons of free patterns and videos online though, and they look simple. The hardest part is figuring out fabric to use.

  • @pfeilele and @symphony4586, I've made them before with the pattern from Green Pepper that had the option of an AiO, cover, etc.  It wasn't *that* difficult, but the way the leg holes are with the elastic hidden inside caught me a little (I sewed through the elastic too much on one of them, and ended up having it tear out once I flipped it right side out).

Anyway, I used the PU fabric outside (they sell it at JoAnn's in the babyville stuff), with the insert part being out of terrycloth (I think the pattern uses 4 layer inserts), and the inside out of flannel.  So the flannel and terrycloth should be absorbent and the PU is waterproof (but expensive so use your 40% off coupons here).
  • I've made half of the cloth diaper wipes we need and several burp cloths with my new serger. I'm hoping to try my hand at cloth diapers too!!
I will probably start some knitting projects too!

    BabyFetus Ticker

  • I'm jealous of you guys with sergers.  I plan on doing wipes with an old school zig zag stitch.  :(
  • @symphony4586 I found a fitted nb diaper I like. I'm mobile so I'm not going to link, but it's from going green with the grizls. Diapersewingsupplies.com has some really nice fabrics. Fabric.com has some too. I might even use some old t-shirts that I don't know what else to do with.

I'm basically looking for nb ones right now because we have a ton of aio dipes already. I'm probably going to make inserts for the best bottom system at some point too.

Oh, and clothdiapermakers.com has a great description of fabrics to use under "fabric".
  • I'm pretty crafty, but so far I have absolutely nothing planned for LO. I'm sure I'll sew a few things--changing pad, curtains, maybe a few clothing items--but I haven't crocheted in years, so a blanket is iffy. A Christmas stocking is definitely on my list, but that probably won't get done before July.
  • I've crochet a blanket for my two kids when I was pregnant with them. Considering this baby will be a summer one he/she will not be able to use it for a few of months, but that's ok, let the crocheting begin.
  • I may start a baby blanket but what I'd really like to do is some paintings with nursery colors. If only I knew how to paint.... It could be fun to try though.
  • I keep having to crochet the kids new hats.  I'm not fast enough to knit one in an hour.   They go to daycare and then they don't come home.  I had DH ask about them (I'm usually at work when he picks them up) and the teachers haven't seen them.  It's not like a kid could wear them back in because they are pretty unique.  So once I have a hat stash, I'm going to start knitting this from www.purlbee.com .  It is an easy stitch so hopefully it won't take me long because I want to make some neutral short sleeve onesies for newborn pics.

  • bluebear1588 - Both knitting and crochet are relatively easy to learn.  Crochet gives a beginner a little more ease and room to make a blanket as a first project though.  If you learn how to make a chain and a single crochet stitch, you can crochet for miles.  Knit blanket patterns may involve piecing sections together, depending on the size.  That may be frustrating for a first project.  Either way you decide to go, I'm sure you'll pick it up quickly and will make something beautiful that your baby will cherish for years. :)  I hope you will share when you get started.

I made DS a knot blanket and plan to do the same for this one once we know the sex. DS's has planes on one side and fabric with DH's elementary school mascot on the other side. I also started looking into making cloth diapers and I'm kicking around the idea of making a bopper style pillow. The last two will only be if I can get DH on board with me getting a new sewing machine, the one I have was my great-aunts and is no longer in working condition. ETA: my mom crocheted DS a blanket and will probably do the same for this LO.
