Crafty moms, any special project for baby in the works?

Re: Crafty moms, any special project for baby in the works?

  • Freaking nothing. I'm extremely crafty and a certified graphic artist. If it can be made- I can do it, I can do it WELL, and I love it. I crochet, but so does my mom, my mom's friend who is close enough to be called family, and my grandma does too. So there's three blankets there. So that's a big no. I'm probably going to make a car seat blanket (it's like a regular blanket, but it has slats to pull the seatbelt through and then you swaddle the kiddo, and the blanket won't get kicked off or anything), but I want to wait till we have a gender or until I find a nice gender neutral fabric. And when I have the dang car seat. Coz that's helpful. Maybe a stroller organizer. I might draw up some nursery decorations, but we can't seem to nail down a theme... :/

  • The blanket is still in progress, but in the meantime I have discovered the quick joy of making tiny socks.

I knit and am currently knitting this airplane blanket for DS: https://www.yarnspirations.com/pattern/knitting/airplane-blanket

I don't know about baby...I knit a ton of baby stuff befor DS was born so not sure what new items I will do. Probably a blanket I guess...only probably because my mom will crochet a blanket, she does for all grandkids, and I having a sewing friend who will be doing a quilt (already asked about colors/patterns) so we'll see... I would love seeing some finished products later!

Edited to add - I build stuff too, didn't come to mind til I read all the replies. Have already built a bit of Ana-inspired stuff, but nothing specifically for baby. More playroom stuff will be in order though soon.

Be careful with the idea of a car seat blanket. Some experts would say not to put anything between baby and the straps of the seat that could change the way it was intended to work. There are suggestions for "shower cap" style covers instead. Plus, the baby could still kick the blanket out of the way, it just wouldn't fall out of the car seat.
I've made car seat canopies for DS and friends. If I have a girl, I'll probably make a "girly" one too.  These are great because it keeps strangers from trying to touch baby. Since our LOs will be summer babies, they can provide warmth but not too much if it's really hot out.

I make children's clothing "for a living." I sew, monogram, and applique. If we go somewhere, DS is typically wearing something that I have made for him. Once we find out the sex of this baby, I will begin working on several things for it to wear as well: gowns, onesies, dresses, etc.

I made a car seat cover for DS and plan to do that for this one as well. I would also like to do the nursery bedding, but I'm afraid I will stumble across something I love at the consignment sale and give in for the ease of things. ;)

I'm sure there will be blankets, burp cloths, bibs, and whatever else I can get done before bedrest.

So far, all I have done for this pregnancy is this shirt for DS. I have been tempted to do something for the baby, but I know I will want gender- specific items and don't want to waste my time or money just yet.

  • I found a "mystery" knitting project where squares are created to be sewn into a blanket (or scarf). SO I can do about one a night, and it's fun seeing it come out as I go, instead of knowing what it is supposed to look like before. I like changing up what I'm doing with every square so it's right in my mindset...as opposed to committing to a WHOLE blanket of one pattern. Works well with having just one ball of yarn too, so I'm using up some scraps.
