I may have gotten the mother of all horrible pregnancy comments

Bottom line, I'd like a vaginal delivery and I'd like it with drugs.  I have zero desire to "feel" childbirth.  I don't judge people who do, but it's just not something I look forward to.

Over dinner with family, I was asked when I'm taking my lamaze classes.  My answer - I'm not taking them.  Just give me drugs and tell me what to do - I'll use my yoga breathing.  The response I got was,

"Ooooooohhhhhhh nooooooooo!  Please, please, please rethink having an epidural.  They're said to cause autism!"

Seriously?  SERIOUSLY???

I've been asked if I'm sure I'm not having twins - not too bothered.  But now telling me that if I have an epidural my child will have autism?  REALLY???

End rant.

I feel the exact same way as you, although I did take birthing classes just to be safe but they didn't really help much, just helped me prepare for what to expect during L&D. My epidural didn't work so I wasn't prepared at all! To say that an epidural is linked to autism is crazy! I hope you gave them a piece of your mind!!!

While on vacation my husbands grandmother was loaded on gin and tonics and told me I shouldn't have anymore children. I wanted to smack her but was too shocked to say anything. Who says that?!? Maybe we want to have a third.... She has no say in the decision. Then she went on a rant about how expensive kids are to feed and school. No SH*T! I thought that was the ultimate insult that I've heard so far. She also told me that all my name choices are silly. I can't stand the woman.
  • Oh good God. Everything these days causes autism.

    It's a BOY

Don't sweat it. That is pure ignorance for ya, plain and simple. You can't fix ignorance. Sorry you have to deal with that though.. Boo.
  • There was something in the news recently about epidural and/or induction being tied to autism. BUT, I'm pretty sure it was one small study, so worth about a grain of salt. People will look for anything to make you do things their way.

  • That's awful!
I cant help but worry this gets said to woman who do have children with autism or other difficulties and what? are woman supposed to blame themselves?? Comments like that make me mad.
  • I would have been SO pissed!! You and I are on the same page regarding delivery and drugs, sign me up and then shoot me up!
I'm sorry you had to deal with that in the first place, comments like that just suck.

Ooh, another "small study" that is framed to blame/guilt mothers. That's new.

Yes I saw this, and the study was primarily focused on induction and Pitocin, which is something I plan on declining anyway (not because of this study).
  • I don't know ANYONE (in our generation) that has given birth with out an epidural. Everyone has had them and loved them. None of them have autistic children. I had an epi with DD too and it was fabulous. I've had worse poops. The healing afterwords is what I am not looking forward to this time around.

Not the same but related... A dad in our baby care class said he was concerned about vaccinating because vaccines cause Down syndrome. Luckily I wasn't in the room, but DH said he was glad someone else told the guy he was full of shit. Comments like that are just so incredibly ignorant, and you're right, can be hurtful.
Wait wait wait... WHAT? Did this guy honestly think babies that are already born develop down syndrome from getting vaccines?? What?

    I believe it.

People are absurdly stupid.  I am on a Fragile X board (I have a pre-mutation) and once had to explain to a woman that her child (who had Fragile X Syndrome) was intellectually disabled because of an inherited gene mutation (i.e. what causes Fragile X) and not because of the MMR vaccine.

Well, duh.  So does pitocin.  And formula.  Oh, wait, is that obesity...? 8-|

In all seriousness, I would take a child birth class.  It's more than just breathing and such.  They discuss inductions, epidurals, emergency c-sections, hospital procedures, etc.  It's worth it.

I would still go to Lamaze classes though. I got an epidural too, but the classes do help. & there may be time where you won't have the help of an epidural.
Good point...or if you end up being one of those people who arrives at the hospital and is already 9cm and about ready to push! This happened to my friend and there was no time for drugs. People are outrageous though, with their comments. Do not feel guilty about the choices you're making for your birth plan...different things work for different people and it's no one's business except yours! :)

  • Wow. My mom has been asking a few questions, but nothing that personal yet. My plan is to not discuss our choices, I'll probably answer a lot of birthing questions with "Well we'll see how it goes and make those decisions with our doctor as needed." I've already been asked by my MIL if I'm going to BF (she did), and I said I was interested in it (which I am, and plan on doing) but that we'll see how things go and decide. I don't want tons of her BF wisdom and this and that, which is what I'll get because she tends to speak like an expert on anything she's done or heard about. I will rely on myself, my baby, and the nurses/LC when the time comes to learn how to BF. I don't need MIL taking charge of my boob.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I just smile and nod when people tell me how I need to birth my baby.  My parents are on the opposite end of the spectrum with, "Ooh, get the epidural as SOON AS YOU GET THERE!!!"  I will probably end up getting one, but I'm going to wait and probably not get one until I actually feel like I need it.  I really didn't want to discuss it with them, so I was like, "OK."  It's not like they will be there to know what is going down when I'm giving birth anyway.

Listen everything causes cancer and autism and downs and learning disabilities....so basically dont touch, eat, drink, inject, look at, wear, smell, see, hear, or think about anything and you should be totally fine. it's really not that hard you guys! ;)

Oh Lord.  I took a Literary Criticism & Theory class and the guy spent the ENTIRE SEMESTER on that story.....I can never look at it again.

And yeah, @Miles2Go stress totes causes the gay.  Actually, once upon a time here on TB a woman posted all about that because she read it in her child psychology book - that was a fun time.
  • I've never had anyone tell me these things, but with my first I did have more than one person tell me scary sad stories about losses at a late stage  (I don't want to be the asshat who freaks anyone else out, so I won't give details), but both times I was late in my pregnancy, like 3rd tri late.
I'm pretty sure people just don't think before they open their mouths, so annoying!

  • I want to punch people sometimes.

I hate getting advice from my mother and DF's mother on birthing and BF. That  was almost 30years ago. Things have changed a little over th time.

I get pissed when people ask me if we are getting married before the baby gets here. Not that its anyones business but no. We have been together 5 years and engaged for over a year now. Im in no hurry so why not wait until I can enjoy a wedding. Sorry I dont want to waddle down the isle or go to the JP.

hatrats: Consider asking for it a bit before you think you need it. Waiting was my plan with DD, but I was in labor in the middle of the night. When the nurse came in and asked if I was going to want an epidural soon I said "oh, not yet, it's still manageable." So she leaves, not 3 minutes later I am pushing the call button because it got that bad that fast. The nurse comes back in and I'm like "NEVERMIND, Need it now!!" and she says she'll call the anesthesiologist to come in. Because he's on call. At his house. Half an hour away. So I had to wait all that time for him to get there, and by the time he did it hurt so bad I could barely stand it. To his credit though he fixed me right up when he did get there. :)

It was chemicals in induction, I thought.  Either way, they find tests and clinical studies to prove all kinds of crazy stuff.  :(  It's hard to know what's best... but in any case, the original person who commented is not worth the time or breath it takes to respond.
